Which Fusion is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Ford Fusion. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 27 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | AWD, FWD | 23–25 mpg |
| 2.5L 4-cylGas | FWD | 24 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylHybrid | FWD | 42 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | FWD | 610 mi range |
- The 2020 Ford Fusion was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Fusion that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Ford Fusion, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission631 crash
A cracked flex plate is the most common failure. It shows up as loud rattling or knocking at idle and on the road, heavy vibration, and sometimes a loss of power. Warning lights usually stay off. Reports run from about 40,000 to 91,000 miles, and dealers often replace the torque converter and transmission pump too. Owners with the 1.5L engine say a Ford coverage program excluded them. Other reports describe slipping gears, repeated transmission rebuilds, a hidden cooling-line leak, and a broken shifter grommet. In one crash report, the car rolled while in park.
Electrical27No crashes
The most serious reports are fires. In one, a plug-in hybrid's high-voltage battery pack burned after the engine shut down while the car was moving, and one person was injured. A more common complaint is a SHIFT SYS FAULT message that leaves the car stuck in park. Owners trace it to a broken shift linkage bushing, and some say it came back after repair. Other reports describe batteries that drain overnight even after replacement, a black touchscreen with no backup camera, SYNC module failures, and an overcharging alternator that cut power on the highway.
Engine26No crashes
Two failures dominate. The first is a cracked flex plate, which causes rattling or knocking at idle that gets louder with the air conditioning on, usually with no warning light. The second is coolant leaking into the cylinders or a failed head gasket. Signs include coolant loss with no visible leak, white exhaust smoke, sudden power loss at highway speed, and dead cylinders that need a new engine. Owners blame the 1.5L EcoBoost. Most reports fall between 65,000 and 96,448 miles, and several cars sit unrepaired after diagnosis.
Coolant leaks into the cylinders and ruins the engine, and in every case diagnosed here the fix is a full engine or short block replacement. Symptoms include white smoke from the exhaust at startup, smoke from the engine bay, stalling, and an Engine Coolant Over-Temperature message. Many cars give no warning light first. Failures run from about 68,000 to 132,000 miles, and none of the cars in these reports had been repaired. One owner describes coolant gurgling with the heater on.
Steering113 crashes
Front lower control arms snap during ordinary turns. This pulls the car sharply left, and two reports end with the car hitting a utility pole. Other reports describe sudden loss of power steering along with a string of warnings: Service AdvanceTrac, lane assist, pre-collision assist. Some also mention the wheel jerking or the brakes applying on their own. A faulty steering control module made one car change lanes by itself. Failures cluster around 66,620 to 81,000 miles. One dealer quoted about $5K for a circuit board.
Brakes52 crashes
The brake pedal sinks to the floor or does nothing at low speed. Two reports end in crashes, one while backing out of a driveway and one at a stop light. A separate pattern involves a failed wheel speed sensor. It sets off ABS, pre-collision, and hill start assist warnings all at once, and the steering feels heavy and the brakes slip. One dealer quoted $450 for that sensor. There are only five reports, and one simply notes the brake fluid reservoir was empty.
Fuel system5No crashes
The evap purge valve sticks open. That keeps the check engine light coming back, and the car is hard to start right after refueling. Some cars stall at stop lights. Codes P0496 and P0456 come up. One owner got the light six times despite replacing the purge valve, solenoid, and filler parts, and another was quoted $1500 for a valve and charcoal canister that were on back order. Separate reports describe failed fuel injectors and fuel coming out of the exhaust, and owners call this a fire risk.
Airbags43 crashes
Airbags fail to deploy in serious crashes. Three crash reports describe no deployment, each with an injury: a guardrail strike at highway speed, a frontal hit from a red-light runner, and a side impact that crushed both driver-side doors. Injuries include neck and back pain, temporary leg paralysis, a head cut, and rib damage. None of the drivers saw a warning light beforehand. A fourth owner says the steering wheel airbag moves too easily.
Suspension3No crashes
A front ball joint broke while one car was being driven, at only 44,000 miles. Lower control arm bushings wear out early and make a clunking noise when turning at low speed. Owners also describe loose steering, misalignment, and uneven tire wear. One complaint filed here is really a transmission problem, with rough shifting, jerking, and hesitation starting near 99,900 miles. There are only three reports in this category.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Fusion owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I started my car and the engine was running very rough. The check engine light came on and I received a notification in the FordPass app of a powertrain control module detected an engine misfire. I was 108 miles from home in a snow storm. I drove to a hotel and spent the night. My husband picked me up the next morning. We towed it to the dealership where they found coolant had leaked into the spark plugs because of a warped cylinder head.

This makes the third time the transmission had to be redone and I have only 95.000 miles on it the first time was about 2months after I purchased the car brand new in December 2020 and each time the transmission gets repaired it cost more and more and they tell me that it need other stuff with it that needs to be replaced nothing in the dash showed failure to any thing

Dead battery again; this is a major concern on this particular fleet car that we have. Dealer had car towed in. I told them to check the connections. This seems to be a concern of other 2020 Ford Fusion owners as well, after researching. We need this vehicle in our fleet and we cannot have this keep happening. No dealer paperwork yet as the problem has not yet been resolved; car still at the dealer.

the first time the incident happened I was driving home from work, i took and a turn and lost power, the car indicated a message that read " Auto StartStop Shift to P, then restart Engine. I tried starting my car a few times and it turned on. A week later I was driving on the highway and it happend. I pulled over and same thing. I took it to a Ford dealership and they couldn't replicate the problem.

Failure of the Flywheel. It’s broken in pieces according to the dealership at greenway Ford. Did some searching on line and other people have report the same issues. The problem is they installed crappy plates that crack between 60k-90k miles. As others have reported the Luckily for them It was at an intersection and could pull over to the side of the road but imagine if this happens to you while on the freeway!

As I was driving last week i suddenly lost engine power and broke down. Had it towed and ford says there’s zero compression in 2 cylinders. It’s a 1.5 ecoboost which I’ve read has issues. 96,448 miles

While turning into a parking lot the lower control arm snapped (broke in half, approximately). The picture I sent is of a front lower control arm, however it is not a picture of the actual control arm that broke. After it broke, the car was forced into a sharp left turn, resulting in the car crashing into a telephone pole. The pole was not damaged but there was damage to the car.

The manufacturer is using the wrong material for the parts on my car. Currently, the right-side lower control bushing is bulging out because a steel bushing was used instead of the aluminum one specified on the website. This issue is causing my car to pull to the right, making steering difficult. I've also experienced the same problem on the left side in the past. I request a recall to fix this and ensure the safety of all drivers on the road.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2016-2019 Lincoln MKC, 2016-2023 Explorer, 2019-2020 Fusion, 2019-2024 Ranger, 2020-2022 Lincoln Corsair, Escape, 2021-2024 Bronco, Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. The engine block heater may crack and develop a coolant leak, causing it to short circuit when the block heater is plugged in.
Risk: An electrical short circuit can increase the risk of a fire.
Fix: Owners are advised not to plug in their block heater until the vehicle is remedied. Dealers will replace the block heater, free of charge. Owners will also have a alternative option to replace engine block heater element with a threaded blanking plug, and remove the block heater electrical cord. Interim letters, notifying owners of the safety risk, were mailed December 3, 2025. Additional letters will be sent once the final remedy is available, anticipated September 2026. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25SA4. Vehicle Identification Numbers (VINs) involved in this recall became searchable on NHTSA.gov on October 15, 2025.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2022 Transit Connect, 2019-2020 MKZ, MKX, Edge, Continental, F-150, Nautilus, Fusion, 2019-2023 Ranger, Mustang, 2020-2021 EcoSport, Expedition, Navigator, 2020-2022 Escape, F-250 SD, Corsair, 2020-2023 Aviator, Transit, 2020-2024 Explorer, 2021-2024 Bronco Sport, and 2022-2024 Maverick vehicles. A software error may cause the rearview camera to display a blank image, or the image may remain on the display after the backing event has ended.
Risk: A rearview camera that displays a blank image can reduce the driver's view behind the vehicle. A rearview image that continues to be displayed after the vehicle is shifted out of reverse may distract the driver. Both of these situations can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Dealers will update the rearview camera software, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 4, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S72.
23V440000ElectricalJun 2023
Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Fusion PHEV vehicles. The battery energy control module (BECM) may become damaged due to excessive voltage and current flow.
Risk: A damaged BECM can result in a loss of drive power or fire, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: Owners are advised not to charge their vehicles until the remedy is completed. Dealers will replace the battery and update the BECM software for free, or Ford will repurchase the vehicle. If your vehicle is currently operating normally, Ford has authorized dealers to replace the fuse block and a software update as an interim repair before the availability of remedy parts for the final repair. This repair will be free of charge (parts and labor). As an alternative remedy, Ford is offering a vehicle refund. Please see Ford's owner notification letter or contact Ford for full details. Owner notification letters were mailed May 15, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 23S33.
