  • The 2020 Dodge Durango was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Durango that averages well under the EPA 15 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Dodge Durango, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Exterior lights18No crashes

Water leaks into the liftgate "racetrack" light and taillight housings and shorts out the LEDs. It usually starts with one dim or dark section and spreads until the whole marker band dies. The license plate and backup lights often go out with it. No warning light comes on, so many drivers only find out when someone else points it out. One failure is reported at 45k miles. Out of warranty, replacements have cost owners over $1200 and up to $1600. Separately, a sharp beak-shaped edge where the taillight meets the liftgate has cut people's skin. That edge accounts for all 3 injuries in this category.

  • Transmission103 crashes

Many reports filed here describe a 2020 Grand Caravan, not a Durango. That includes all 3 crash-related reports and most of the transmission failures. The Durango reports are fewer. One describes a hard shift into reverse on every start that keeps getting louder, starting around 20,000 miles. Another describes a transfer case failure that leaves the vehicle undrivable. A third describes a defective shifter control module: a "Service Shifter" message appears, then the steering turns heavy and the vehicle won't accelerate at highway speed.

  • Electrical7No crashes

One vehicle caught fire in a driveway after a remote start at about 11,200 miles and was totaled. Another report describes a faulty integrated power module (TIPM) with a melted fuse. That vehicle cranks but won't start, several times a day, with no check engine light. A frayed wire harness under the driver's seat breaks the airbag sensor connection when the seat moves, so the airbag and seat belt warnings flicker on and off. Other owners report violent engine vibration, lost compression, and the key fob starting the engine by accident in a closed garage.

  • Engine5No crashes

Losing power under acceleration is the main pattern. At high RPM or under heavy load the engine shakes or bogs, the check engine light comes on, and a message says auto start-stop is disabled. Drivers describe this happening while passing on two-lane highways. One report ties it to a severe cylinder #1 misfire covered by a technical service bulletin, and new coils and plugs did not fix it. Two leaks also appear. Oil seeps from the oil filter housing and pools on top of the engine, which a dealer called common. The transmission oil cooler leaks at a factory-installed clamp.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out suddenly while driving. A "Power Steering Unavailable" message appears and the wheel becomes very hard to turn, in one case on a vehicle with only 170 miles. Another report describes the steering wheel locking at 45 MPH. It was fixed by replacing the power steering rack, and the owner linked it to steering recall 22V154000 at 48,000 miles. One report says the steering column rubbed through a brake line until it burst. Another report in this group describes a Caravan, not a Durango.

  • Airbags3No crashes

Most reports are about seat belt sensing errors. The driver's buckle doesn't register, so the unbuckled chime keeps sounding and the airbag system turns itself off unless the belt is held down. Another report has the seat belt and airbag warnings chiming even with every belt fastened. Separately, a passenger active headrest deployed while driving without any impact. Dealers charge for the buckle repair even though it is a safety system.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

One driver's seat belt doesn't retract after unbuckling and has to be pushed back up by hand. The owner notes a recall covered the same symptom on a Jeep Grand Cherokee. In the other report, a belt was assembled wrong at the factory and can't be fastened without twisting it. With only 2 reports, there is no wider pattern yet.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

The vehicle speeds up on its own at highway speed without cruise control engaged. In one case it climbed from 42 mph to 65 mph and sped up again every time the brake was released. The second report describes a delayed throttle response, then the vehicle accelerating by itself as if cruise control had switched on. The brakes then failed to stop it. Both reports describe a direct risk of losing control, and one happened days after purchase.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Durango owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Exterior lights
Bought vehicle new in 2020, has 41K miles. Tonight, I noticed when arriving home that the entire center light on the lift gate is not functioning. I also do not have tag lights and my rear camera is non-functioning. At night, the back of the vehicle is not lit very well without that center light plus the tag is not illuminated. I appears this is a common issue with the Durango. I feel is poses a serious risk due to the rear lighting not functioning.

Exterior lights
The tail light burned out because of water intrusion. I understand there is a leaky gasket that lets water in and, in time, this moisture ruins the LED taillight. Mine gave way at 45k miles. One section on the left started fading, then the whole taillight burned out. I was reading on the Internet a lot of people report the same issue for a number of years, how is this still happening, can you please help?

Filed with NHTSA, December 2023

Transmission
Cylinder #2 misfire which mechanic says is an engine compression issue and will require the engine to be taken apart to be fixed. Mechanic says it makes no sense for a vehicle of this age and only 70k miles. I understand that this has been a consistent issue with all Dodge Caravans.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Transmission
The transmission failed at just under 60k miles. Our air bag sensor light is now coming on and not sure why. I don’t have the money to continue to repair this vehicle plus make payments. We also have had issues with the front bolts on the driver side continuing to loosen.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Electrical
Vehicle was locked and off in the garage, which is underneath my home. Transmission was in park and the emergency brake was set. I was in the room directly above the garage. The key was in my front pants pocket and I inadvertently pressed some combination of the buttons on the key and the vehicle started. I had to go downstairs into the garage, unlock the vehicle, insert the key and turn off the engine.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Electrical
While driving the engine began to vibrate violently and the check engine light turned on. Luckily I was close to the dealership because I live in a small town with one major road. I was able to quickly slow down without crashing or causing an accident and slowly drove to dealership. If I was at any significant speed I could have crashed injuring myself and my two small children.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2024

Engine
Engine oil filter housing leaking. Oil leaking and pooling on top of engine. Could cause fire. Technician at Dodge Dealer said this is a common problem on this engine. It affects other Dodge/Chrysler vehicles as well. Component was inspected by our insurer Car Shield. No warnings or messages prior to the failure. Technician found the issue during routine oil change.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2022

Engine
When accelerating to pass another car in front of us on a 2 lane highway we experienced a loss of power and all instrumentation flashed on/off/on, then it posted a check engine light and stated that auto start stop wasn't working. Power came back and we finished the pass but it could have resulted in a head on collision.

Recalls to confirm (3)

Recall repairs are free at any Dodge dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V876000Equipment Adaptive/mobilityDec 2025

Rollx Vans (Rollx) is recalling certain GMC Yukon, Sierra, Chevrolet Express 2500, Ford Transit, E-250, Toyota Sienna, Sienna Hybrid, Honda Odyssey, Chrysler Town and Country, Voyager, Pacifica, Dodge Grand Caravan, and Ram Promaster vehicles equipped with QRT-Deluxe and QRT-Max wheelchair restraints. Please refer to Rollx's recall report for specific model year information. The retractors may not lock, preventing the wheelchair from being properly secured.

Risk: An unsecured wheelchair can move during transit, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Rollx will work with Q'Straint to inspect and replace the retractors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 5, 2026. Owners may contact Rollx's customer service at 1-800-956-6668.

  2. 21V280000AirbagsApr 2021

Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Dodge Durango vehicles. The Side Air Bag Inflatable Curtain (SABIC) fastener may be loose or missing.

Risk: A loose or missing fastener may cause the side curtain air bag to deploy incorrectly, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Dealers will tighten or replace the fastener, free of charge. Owner notification letters were sent on May 7, 2021. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is Y16.

A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors.".

Risk: The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will update the radio display software, free of charge. Optionally, owners can choose to remotely update their software via an Over-The-Air (OTA) update available as of May 1, 2020. The recall began April 27, 2020.
