Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Trailblazer, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical9No crashes

The instrument cluster and infotainment screen go black while driving. Speed, fuel, and safety warnings disappear for seconds or longer, and one report links it to connecting a phone over Bluetooth. Several cars lose all power or stall without warning, sometimes at a stop with auto start-stop on. In the worst cases the lights go out, the shifter will not move, and the car needs a jump and a tow. One owner says a dealer fixed a stalling car by correcting the torque on a ground wire. Many reports involve nearly new cars, and dealers often find nothing wrong.

  • Transmission52 crashes

The car lurches forward when shifted from park to drive. Two of the five reports involve crashes. In one, the jolt pushed the car into another vehicle. In the other, the engine died after an auto-stop and the car was rear-ended. Other reports describe reverse that slams in or hesitates at under 17,500 miles and keeps doing it after a valve body replacement. One car would not engage any gear, rolled freely, and lost power brake assist. Repeated check engine and StabiliTrak warnings go unresolved after several dealer visits.

  • Brakes4No crashes

The brakes squeal and grind, mostly at low speed or when cold. Noise starts as early as 13,000 miles and gets worse over time, while dealers call it normal or say they cannot hear it. Some cars also shudder or pulse under braking. In one case a mechanic found problems in the rear brakes and rotors and misplaced caliper pins, and the dealer said the brakes needed replacing and resurfacing. A separate report describes the car jerking and not stopping as intended when the brake pedal is pressed.

  • Engine4No crashes

Stalling in traffic is the most serious pattern. The car shuts off coming out of auto start-stop and does not restart right away, leaving drivers stuck in live lanes. One car had internal engine failure at 26,000 miles and needed a new engine. A recurring check engine light with code P0128 is traced to a failing coolant bypass valve, and the repair requires removing the front end. One new car with about 400 miles had smoke coming from under the hood and through the cabin vents.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Trailblazer owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
The vehicle was started with the key fob. The vehicle was then driven for 12 miles without a key within the vehicle. I had to bring the key to where the vehicle was located to lock the car and be able to drive it. This has not been inspected.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Electrical
I was driving and the vehicle cluster display and radio went out. I was unable to see how fast i was going and any system info. It eventually came back on. During this time the car was continuing to drive but unable to see any lane - blindspot warning or speed or system controls or warning events.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Engine
