Which Escalade is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Cadillac Escalade. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
6.2L 8-cylGas4WD, RWD16 mpg
3.0L 6-cylDiesel4WD, RWD22–23 mpg
  • The 2023 Cadillac Escalade was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escalade that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Cadillac Escalade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine991 crash

Sudden engine shutdown at highway speed dominates these reports. The engine quits, usually with no warning light. The transmission drops into neutral, and the SUV coasts to a stop and will not restart. Many drivers describe this at 70 to 80 mph in traffic, and one report involves a crash. Dealers often find a seized or failed engine, sometimes with metal in the oil, and replace it. Failures cluster between about 10,000 and 28,000 miles. Some owners report a second engine failure. Several describe waits of months for a replacement engine.

Most of these filings describe waiting on a recall repair because the part is not yet available, and many of those owners have had no failure. Others report loud engine noise, knocking, clicking, a chugging sound with no response at 75 mph, heavy oil consumption with a Check Oil message, and unexpected shutoff. Dealer diagnoses include crankshaft damage and engines that need replacing. One owner reports knocking and slow acceleration about 16,000 miles after the recall visit. Warning lights are usually absent before trouble starts.

  • Transmission251 crash

Engine stalls and loss of propulsion make up most of these filings. Grinding, ticking, knocking, or lifter clatter often comes first. The SUV may shift itself into neutral, sometimes at highway speed and sometimes while stopped at a light. One report involves a crash. Dealers describe crankshaft damage and failed engines, with replacement engines on back-order. Transmission complaints also appear: slipping, hard downshifts, a valve body replacement, a cracked fluid pump, and a torque converter replacement. Some owners say noise and stalling came back after a recall visit.

  • Electrical172 crashes

Loss of propulsion while driving is the main complaint filed here. The engine cuts out without warning, steering and brakes turn heavy, and the vehicle often will not restart. Some drivers see a restart-engine or low-battery message. Two reports involve crashes. In one, the SUV slipped out of gear and rolled backward with the driver outside, injuring the driver. Other complaints cover water leaking in under the steering column, poor rear visibility at night, a trailer brake control switch, and doors auto-locking with the key and a child inside.

  • Brakes4No crashes

Brakes engaging on their own is the core complaint. One driver reports the brakes locking for about a second at 55 mph with nothing ahead. Another describes repeated unintended braking after an engine replacement, which wore out pads and rotors several times. Other filings describe the engine shutting down on the highway, taking braking and acceleration with it and forcing the driver to steer to the shoulder. One of those failures came at about 18,969 miles. Grinding while turning and four-wheel drive cutting out also appear.

  • Steering3No crashes

Lost power assist during engine failure accounts for most of these filings. Drivers describe a hard shift followed by lost power, steering assist, and braking assist at highway speed. Dealers then replaced the engine after finding spun bearings and metal debris. Separate reports cite abnormal noise when turning the wheel, including a cranking sound. One owner had the steering column replaced and still hears the noise. Another could not get the car inspected while waiting for a recall part.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

The rear camera loses its parking and pedestrian guidelines, either at delivery or within about a month, and a blue hourglass icon appears on the center screen. Owners say neither dealers nor Cadillac have a fix. A separate report describes automatic braking engaging at random while reversing with nothing nearby, at 1,506 miles. One owner also reports a vibration sound above 70 mph that repeated dealer visits did not cure.

  • Suspension2No crashes

A snapped front upper control arm on the driver side let the wheel come off while the SUV was moving, a direct loss-of-control risk. The other report describes the engine dying at highway speed at about 16,500 miles. Steering became heavy and braking became hard. A long wait for a replacement engine followed, and the owner reports continuing problems since then.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Escalade owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Engine
My vehicle went in to the dealer for a routine engine oil change at 34k miles. I let them know that my vehicle was having a tugging sensation when I would press the gas. That same day(2/15/25) I was told that I would need a new engine. It is 2/28/25 and the dealership still doesn't have a time frame of when they will receive a motor to replace. By the way I bought my vehicle brand new and have always maintained they oil checks in their due time.

Engine
This is the second 2023 Cadillac Escalade sport platinum that we both brand new from the dialer and after the first one after 15K miles the engine blow off so the dialer replace it then we both the second one , brand new after 20k miles same thin the engine quit on as on the free way and its now in the dialer ship for two months now waiting for a new engine.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Transmission
10 speed transmission valve body failed with 14k miles which resulted in inability to accelerate/shift and the car would not shift into reverse. After researching this appears to be a very common problem experienced by owners of other GM vehicles with the same 10 speed transmission.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
UNKNOWN. The car decelerated on the freeway from 80 mph by automatically going into N. Once we managed to pull over to the shoulder, the car would not turn on again or shift gears. The dealership thinks it's an engine failure and they have multiple escalades in the shop for the same issue.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Electrical
I was driving to work at 45 miles/hour and the car's engine cut out. My life was at risk because the car cut out without warning while I was driving. When the car stopped working, I called the dealership, and they came to take the car away. The car didn't give any warning or display any warning messages beforehand. The car has been at the dealership for a month and they still haven't repaired it.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Electrical
my wife was driving down the road late at night and the engine turned off and all the lights inside the car (dash lights, etc) and outside the car turned off...it was super scary. no warning lights came on before this happened...there was no warning given by the car that something was wrong. Got the car to the dealership and the dealer diagnosed it with a blown engine. this failure could have caused death or injury if there were other cars/people around.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Brakes
Roads were dry. Sunny conditions. Driving approximately 55 mph in fast lane. Vehicle brakes locked up for approximately one second. There was no collision warning and no vehicle in front of us. We pulled over to disengage all collision and emergency brake functions. Driver and passengers were all shocked and had pain from tension in neck and back. Had roads been icy this could have led to a multiple vehicle accident with severe injuries or fatalities.

Where the 2023 fits in the Escalade's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2023 is the third model year of the Escalade's fifth generation (2021–2023).

Cadillac updated the Escalade for 2025, so a 2023 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2023)

  • New front fascia, new interior design

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any Cadillac dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V274000EngineApr 2025

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2024 Cadillac Escalade and Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Suburban, and Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles equipped with a 6.2L V8 gas engine.
