These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Silverado is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • The 2022 Chevrolet Silverado was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Silverado that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Chevrolet Silverado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine141No crashes

Sudden failure of the 6.2L L87 engine leads these reports. Engines knock, shake, lose all power, or seize on the highway, often with no warning light, and dealers find damaged lifters, camshafts, and bearings. Several trucks fail after passing the recall inspection, and some replacement engines fail again within a few thousand miles. Heavy oil consumption and ticking come before some failures. A second pattern is coolant control valve failure that forces limp mode, with parts back-ordered for months. Three reports describe engine bay fires, one causing minor burns.

Most of these filings concern recall 25V274000 on the engine, with owners told that repair parts are not available. Some were warned not to drive the truck until the fix arrives. Several trucks fail while waiting, with knocking, screeching, repeated stalling, limp mode, and thrown connecting rods that seize the engine. Failures often come with no warning light. One injury report links a crushed exhaust pipe to nausea and a brief loss of consciousness while driving.

  • Transmission121No crashes

Transmission valve body failure is the dominant report. Trucks jerk on shifts, then show "Reduced Acceleration" or "Service Transmission" warnings, drop into limp mode, or refuse to go into reverse. Failures appear as early as 13,000 miles and as late as 90,500. Some repairs are followed by torque converter failure or repeat valve body trouble. A driveline shudder is also described under 50,000 miles. Several owners report sudden loss of propulsion, including one after passing the L87 engine recall inspection, and dealer repairs that drag on for months.

  • Electrical992 crashes

Electrical faults range from annoying to dangerous. Some trucks suffer a sudden electrical "reset" that disables the brakes while driving. The power tailgate can open by itself and drain the battery, and the electronic parking brake engages on its own. Other reports cover a blank gauge cluster, fast-blinking turn signals, flickering lights and wipers, and a failed telematics module that kills OnStar and Wi-Fi. Factory trailer brake control blows its fuse under load. Many filings here actually describe L87 engine failures. One parked truck caught fire and spread flames to a home.

  • Brakes28No crashes

Brakes suddenly lose power assist, with "Service Brake Assist" or "Brake System Failure" messages and a pedal that goes hard or sinks to the floor. Several drivers nearly rear-end other cars. The fault often clears after a restart, and dealers frequently cannot reproduce it. Reports start at under 2,500 miles. The factory integrated trailer brake controller is another common complaint, showing "Trailer Brakes Disabled Service Required" from new, with dealers saying no fix exists. Uneven pad wear, warped rotors, and failed parking brake actuators also appear. One report involves an underbody fire.

  • Steering13No crashes

Engine stalls at highway speed take power steering and brakes with them, leaving drivers to coast to a stop. Other trucks show intermittent "Service Power Steering" messages, sometimes in heavy rain, or lose steering assist completely until a restart. One report describes the steering column locking at 70 mph. Heavy-duty owners describe the truck wandering badly in crosswinds. Additional complaints cover aluminum upper control arms corroding from road salt, a power steering rack replaced at 36,000 miles, a loose tie rod jam nut, and keys that will not release.

  • Body and structure101 crash

Power tailgates that open and close on their own, sometimes at freeway speed or while towing, account for most reports here. A recall exists, but some owners say their VIN is not included. Front trim pieces next to the headlights come loose and fly off at highway speed. Rear glass urethane and frame crack and leak water into the cab, hidden behind the headliner. One crash report describes a front tire detaching at 60 MPH, injuring two people. A reflective hood scoop that blinds the driver is also noted.

  • Airbags65 crashes

No deployment occurs in most of the front-end crashes reported here. Impacts with a light pole, trees, a deer at highway speed, and another vehicle all left occupants without inflated bags, and three people were injured across the crash filings. In another crash, the truck veers right into a concrete guardrail with lane keep assist turned off, though the bags do deploy. A separate report ties the leaking sliding rear window to a soaked headliner, with a dealer warning the water could damage air bag wiring.

  • Wheels and tires21 crash

A front wheel detaches while the truck slows for a light, causing a crash with five people injured, according to one of only two reports. No warning lights or noises came before the failure, and the air bags did not deploy. The other complaint concerns the spare: it uses a different wheel and tire size than the 20-inch road wheels, and the owner's manual gives conflicting guidance on how far and how fast it can be driven.

In owners' own words

Engine
the first engine blew while pulling out of my street onto a 45 mph road in march of 2025. they did the useless recall on the new engine and said it was good. The replacement engine blew in the november of 2025 in the fast lane at 80 mph. no warning no check engine lights just shut off. The replacement engine started make noise like it was going to blow again in december 2025. I paid 65k to have 3 bad engines in one year. corporate gm was of no help

Engine
My truck has the 6.2l engine, prior to me buying it in September 2025 with 27,000 miles it had its engine replaced due to the recall/engine failure, then after 6,000 miles on 12-30-25 the 2nd engine it has had failed and had to be replaced. This truck that only has 34,000 miles is now on its 3rd motor and leaves me worried to really travel with it due to wondering if I am going to be stranded again.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
April 2023 experienced loss of power and eventually would not start at all. (8k miles) Was at the dealer for just over 3 months and had motor replaced. April 2025 valve body on the transmission went out and was at the dealer a week and a half. (15K miles) Currently experiencing loss of tailgate function and an error message on the screen saying "caution reduced speed". (17,400 miles)

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
My Chevrolet Truck was purchased brand new with under a thousand miles on it. I was driving and the sensor went out at about 45,000 miles then the other sensor went out two days later. 15 thousand miles later my transmission went out. Was at the dealership for 6 months. Now I have the vehicle back and still isn’t driving correctly. Shifting problems

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Electrical
Even though electronic parking brake has NOT been set when parking, upon leaving from parking space, electronic parking brake engages and vehicle feels and sounds as though parking brake has been applied. My concern is that parking brake may engage while driving at speed and loss of vehicle control could occur. This problem is intermittent and has occurred 6 or 7 times during the month of February 2024. Vehicle has 6500 miles on it.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

Electrical
I was driving on the highway and there was a sudden drop in power and hesitation in the engine. I slowed down too quickly on a busy highway and almost got rear ended. I took it to the shop and found out I had to replace the engine due to the cam and lifters were bad. It cost $12,000 to replace a four year engine with 148,000 miles. The time before that this happened, I had to replace the engine wiring harness

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Brakes
Inner brakes are worn down to the sensor at 35,000 miles. While the outside brakes are perfectly fine not much wear. There is a recall on the brake valve issue and bpmv same year and model of mine but my vin does not fall under that recall. I believe there is something wrong inside my rear brake system that is causing inner brakes to be worn that low compared to the outside brakes.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Brakes
Service brake assist message on dash, with check engine light. Brakes are almost useless takes excessive force to get vehicle to stop. Resets after being parked and restarted. has happened several times but will not replicate a dealer. Started with less then 2500 miles on the truck.

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 21V758000BrakesPark outsideSep 2021

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2021-2022 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, Silverado 3500, GMC Sierra 2500, and Sierra 3500 vehicles with electronic brake control modules (EBCM) replaced during vehicle assembly. The bolts that attach the brake pressure modulator valve (BPMV) assembly may not be properly tightened, which could fail to seal the two sub-assemblies and allow water intrusion.

Risk: Water in the BPMV may cause an electrical short circuit and increase the risk of fire.

Fix: Owners are advised to park outside and away from other structures until the recall repair is completed. Dealers will replace the BPMV assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on October 20, 2021. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. The transmission control valve may fail and cause the rear wheels to lock-up.

Risk: Rear wheel lock-up can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will install new transmission control module software, free of charge. GM will provide a special coverage program to cover the repair of transmissions that are identified by the remedy software as containing a defective control valve. General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Chevrolet Silverado 2500, 3500, GMC Sierra 2500 and 3500 vehicles equipped with power-unlatching tailgates. The tailgate's electronic gate-release switch may short circuit due to water intrusion, which can result in the tailgate inadvertently unlatching while the vehicle is in park.

Risk: An unlatched tailgate may open while driving and result in a loss of unsecured cargo, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Owners are advised to check that the tailgate is closed and latched before driving. Dealers will replace the exterior touchpad switch assemblies, free of charge.
