Which F-150 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford F-150. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 21–22 mpg |
| 3.5L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 20 mpg |
| 3.3L 6-cylFlex fuel | 4WD, RWD | 20–21 mpg |
| 5.0L 8-cylFlex fuel | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
| 3.5L 6-cylHybrid | 4WD, RWD | 23–25 mpg |
- The 2022 Ford F-150 was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A F-150 that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford F-150, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission1663 crashes
Rear axle bolts loosen or shear off, starting with a clicking or rattling from a rear wheel. A broken bolt can cut drive power. A recall covers this, but many trucks still wait for parts. Transmission complaints describe shudder, hesitation, harsh or missed shifts, burning fluid smells, and rear wheels locking up, often between 35,000 and 71,000 miles. Some owners also report transfer case and front differential failures. Separate reports describe sudden unintended acceleration ending in crashes, plus two fires that started under the truck or in the engine bay.
Electrical1501 crash
Without warning, the speakers fire off a gunshot-loud pop followed by full-volume static or screeching. Volume and power controls do nothing, and the noise often keeps going after the truck is shut off. Most reports involve the B&O Unleashed system, and 15 injuries are logged, mostly ringing ears and hearing loss. Drivers say they braked hard in traffic when it hit. Some only stopped it by disconnecting the battery or pulling fuse 28. Other complaints cover low power and deep sleep modes, a backup brake assist that failed, and one parked truck that burned.
Exterior lights49No crashes
LED daytime running light strips burn out inside the headlight assembly, one side or both, usually between about 34,900 and 50,700 miles. Dealers say the fix is a full headlight replacement, quoted at $1,700 to over $2,800 per side, and owners just past warranty pay it themselves. The rear light bar takes on water, which makes the reverse lights flicker or quit. Some report replacement bars from recall 23S30 failing again. Less common complaints include high beams that never come on and flickering passenger-side lights.
Fuel system28No crashes
Most of these complaints are about an open fuel pump recall, not crashes. Owners received the notice, but dealers have no parts, and many say the wait has gone on far too long. Those with symptoms report sputtering and hesitation, power loss and stalling at speed, warning lights, and trucks that will not restart. One stalling report puts the failure near 60,000 miles. In at least one case, a dealer diagnosed a failed low-pressure fuel pump and told the owner to stop driving the truck.
Wipers and visibility211 crash
Windshield wipers stop mid-sweep in rain or snow, and dealers find a failed wiper motor. One report describes a crash into a ditch during a snowstorm. A recall covers the wipers, but parts have been unavailable, and some dealers refuse the repair until the wipers actually fail. Other complaints cover windshield seals that leak water onto the dash and cause mildew odors and corrosion, a leaking panoramic sunroof, a rear window that shattered on its own, and power mirrors that freeze shut in cold weather.
Brakes198 crashes
Braking fails with the pedal going to the floor or turning hard, sometimes with no warning light. Eight of 19 complaints involve a crash. The electric parking brake engages by itself while the truck is moving, skidding it to a stop, and a parking brake recall applies to some trucks. Other reports describe the auto hold feature releasing at a stop, emergency braking not engaging before a collision, and ABS and traction warnings followed by leaking brake fluid. Dealers often say they cannot reproduce the problem.
Equipment18No crashes
Nearly every complaint here describes the same audio fault. A loud pop like a gunshot sounds through the speakers, usually at startup, followed by static that the radio controls cannot turn down or off. It can last from seconds to the whole drive, and sometimes continues with the truck off. Three injuries are logged, mostly ear pain and ringing. Reports name the B&O Unleashed system. Dealers say there are no fault codes and offer no fix, and some owners pull fuse 28 or disconnect the battery.
Steering82 crashes
Power steering cuts out while driving, and dealers trace it to a fault in the electric rack and pinion or the steering gear assembly. One report puts it at 1,000 miles and another at 37,000. One crash involved brakes and power steering failing together at low speed, injuring both occupants. Other complaints describe the BlueCruise hands-free system steering toward the road edge, repeated rear differential failures that made turns rough, oil leaks near the front axle, and shaking during acceleration.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints F-150 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
For lighting, model came with the quad beam and headlight would often malfunction leaving headlights stuck in the low position and high beams not usable. For power train, the 10 speed would cause sharp jolts and shifts that is not normal for regular driving. Very abrupt jolts that make operating vehicle unsafe to drive in traffic. Vehicle began experiencing these symptoms around 25k miles and dealership mentions these issues aren’t a big problem.

Rear axle bolt broke while 1,300 miles from home. Recall has been in place for at least 17 months now and still NO repair available from Ford. THIS IS A HAZARD. While driving when the bolt breaks you will lose power which if you were passing in the left lane on a highway at 70MPH it would result in a catastrophic situation. The daytime running light on the passenger side of the vehicle has failed very prematurely - before even reaching 40000 miles. This is an issue as it puts me at risk if other drivers cannot see my lights. The problem is permanent and the entire headlight must be replaced. No warnings were present, I only happened to notice when approaching my truck one day.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
While driving my entire dashboard went off. No speedometer, No Tach, No fuel gauge, No odometer, nothing. Replaced appropriate fuse still out. Vehicle has just over 36,000 miles
Filed with NHTSA, December 2024
Daytime running lamp burnt out on passenger side. Coincidentally, right after the vehicle was in for a parking lamp recall. There are 34,900 miles and I’m just shy of a month out of my 3 year warranty. $1700 for a new headlight at owners expense is ridiculous and this is a common issue on these trucks.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
The running lights went out on the front passenger side. These are LED lights and should last longer than 60k miles. These can’t be repaired and have to be replaced. I got quoted $1,650 without labor for one.
