Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2024 Chevrolet Silverado. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Your inspection sheet

Tick items off on your phone at the car, or print it. Ticks stay on this device.

These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Silverado is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2024 Chevrolet Silverado was sold in six versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 450 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Chevrolet Silverado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission932 crashes

Transmissions refuse to engage reverse, slip, or drop into limp mode with a reduced-acceleration warning. Dealers often trace this to a failed valve body, with many failures under 10,000 miles, and replacement parts sit on back order for months. Other reports describe a pause or hard shift from first to second gear that gets worse on cold starts, plus lifter failures that cause misfires and ticking. Some 3.0L diesel trucks crack a transmission cooler line at the thermal bypass block. Two reports involve crashes, one with injury, after hesitation or unwanted acceleration.

  • Engine901 crash

Ticking, knocking, misfires and heavy oil burning often lead to sudden power loss or a seized motor while driving. Collapsed valve lifters show up within a few thousand miles, and several trucks needed a full engine replacement at low mileage. Many reports involve the 6.2-liter engine and tie to a recall that adds thicker oil and an inspection. At least one engine failed after that recall work was done, and replacement engines are back-ordered. Power loss at highway speed is the main danger, and one crash followed a complete loss of power linked to low fuel pump pressure codes.

Most of these complaints are about engine recall 25V274000, not an actual failure. Owners got the recall notice but cannot get the repair because parts are not available, and many say the wait has gone on too long. Others believe their trucks should be covered but were left out by VIN. A smaller group reports ticking, chirping or thumping engine noises, hesitation, stalling, and engines that needed replacement. Diesel owners also report false "DEF Empty" warnings while towing that cut power and speed.

  • Electrical811 crash

Infotainment screens, radios and instrument clusters freeze, go blank, or cut out. When that happens, the backup camera, turn-signal sounds, or speed readout can drop out until a restart. Many trucks also throw strings of warnings that disable collision alerts, lane departure and traction control, and dealers often cannot reproduce them. Towing owners, mostly with HD trucks, report the trailer brake connection dropping in and out while driving. Repeated software updates and module swaps often fail to fix the problems. One crash with injury followed collision alerts failing while reversing.

  • Brakes171 crash

Trailer brakes cut out while towing. The truck's built-in controller shows "check trailer wiring" and then disconnects and reconnects at random. This mostly affects HD models pulling travel trailers and fifth wheels, sometimes from the first miles. A GM service bulletin covers the problem, but dealers often cannot fix it. In one crash, a loaded trailer lost its brakes on a downhill grade and jackknifed the truck. Other reports describe sudden loss of service braking with ABS and stability warnings, rusted or fast-wearing pads, and false emergency braking.

  • Steering12No crashes

Trucks pull, wander, or dart, especially at highway speed or on fresh pavement, and some jerk toward one side without warning. Other owners report about 1 inch of free play on center, and one outer tie rod separated while parking. Dealers often call the behavior normal or cannot fix it. One truck lost power steering and power brakes when the charging system failed. Another showed a "Service Steering Column Lock" message after a dead battery and could not be reset.

  • Body and structure11No crashes

Power tailgates open on their own, sometimes while driving, and some drop onto the hitch. Others cycle up and down until the batteries go dead. Dealers often say these trucks fall outside an existing tailgate recall. Other reports cover a loose power running board, a cracking dashboard, glare from chrome interior trim, and tonneau covers coming apart at speed. Silverado EV owners report a frunk latch that reads as open and forces limp mode. One HD owner had a trailer hitch detach while towing.

  • Fuel system6No crashes

Diesel DEF gauges misread. They report an empty tank that still holds fluid and start a countdown to a 65 mph speed limit, often while towing. Dealers have called this normal operation. Other reports describe sudden highway stalls from a failed fuel pump control module or a shorted in-tank pump on the diesel, plus low fuel rail pressure during cranking. One HD truck was delivered without its capless fuel adapter, and fuel splashed out when it was refueled after running dry.

  • Airbags22 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in serious frontal crashes. Both reports describe heavy front-end damage with no deployment, and each crash injured two people. One truck had only 1100 miles and was declared a total loss. With just two complaints this is not a broad pattern, but both cases are severe.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Silverado owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Valve Body on transmission failed at 9000 miles resulting in extreme reduced acceleration and it being unsafe to drive. No warning lights appeared until after the part failed. Failed valve body has been confirmed by the certified dealership service center. Replacement valve bodies are unavailable from the manufacturer GM. GM has not issued any formal recall for this part and searching online forums, this is a very common part failure for this vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Transmission
Transmission failed at 15000 miles. Attempted to shift to reverse and instead car went into neutral. Allowed me to shift into forward but quickly went into “limp mode” once underway. Seems like the same issue as many similar gm trucks have had with transmissions but my 2024 is not included in active recalls when searched by VIN. Suspect it probably should be since issue appears to be the same as those that are.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Engine
Sudden Engine failure, metal shavings found in oil at 16K miles. GM and the dealer acknowledges that the 6.2L motor has been having issues. They state that they are currently investigating but a "fix" of the issue has NOT been made. The motor was replaced under warranty, however, the engine they replaced it with has the same chance of failing as the original engine. There was no warning, no indications prior the the motor seizing up at a red light

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Engine
Motor blew in my 2024 Chevy Silverado. Motor was a 6.2 liter, L87 with 17,600 miles. Tomorrow will be 4 weeks without my vehicle. I've gotten no information on when any repairs will be made, nor have I gotten any support from the dealership or GM. I was driving 60+ mph in heavy traffic when the motor went. I was put in a bad situation and was lucky to get out of it without injury. I don't know what to do and need help!

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Electrical
Intermittent lose of trailer brakes. Dealerships are unable to duplicate issue, will not replace under factory warranty. Chevy has not issued a recall for this specific vin. But other 2024 Chevy 2500 have had recalls for it. Would like a recall for my vin die to this being an issue if an accident occurs. Traveling with multiple 10K pound trailers and no brakes.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Electrical
Vehicle’s braking system for the trailer constantly disconnects while driving. The trailer will then lose all braking capabilities. Multiple service trailer brake system, check trailer wiring harness, trailer brake connected messages. Issues started shortly after purchasing the truck new at only 55 miles on the odometer

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Brakes
When hooked to 5th wheel trailer the brakes work good for a day then info center says check trailer brakes. The trailer bakes are not operational at that time. A few minutes later trailer brakes are back working again. The truck keeps shutting off the trailer brakes and sometimes they do not come back on at all. It happens every time I hook up to 5th wheel trailer. I have had it back to dealership 6 times and they can’t fix it.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2025

Brakes
On multiple occasion parking sensors activate for no reason. Emergency braking occurred while backing as well as while driving for no reason at all. High possibility of a crash occurring. Gm refuses to repair or replace. Gm stated dealer says vehicle has completed repairs and vehicle ready for pickup. Dealer has not repaired or replaced any items or parts.
