Which ProMaster is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ram ProMaster. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A ProMaster that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ram ProMaster, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering11No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning. The wheel turns heavy, locks up at low speeds, or jerks hard to one side, sometimes at highway speed after a bump. Dealers keep finding water and mud inside a wiring connector under the van. The corrosion means replacing the steering rack and one or two wiring harnesses. Warnings for ESC, hill assist, and collision systems often light up, sometimes with no power steering warning. Failures cluster between about 21,000 and 50,000 miles. Some owners pay for the repair after the warranty runs out.

  • Electrical7No crashes

Engine-compartment fires are the most serious reports here. In two cases, vans caught fire shortly after being parked or stopped. One driver noticed a burning electrical smell first. The other had no warning at all. Another owner says dealers have no repair yet for an engine-compartment fire risk. Other complaints cover replacement keys that cannot be programmed, a van that would not shut off, a chassis battery that drains within days, and a sliding door that falsely reads open while driving, which keeps the doors from locking.

  • Brakes61 crash

The brake pedal sinks to the floor with grinding and pulsing, often after a Service Braking System alert. Dealers often find nothing wrong. When a brake actuator fails, emergency braking and cruise control shut off, and replacement parts are back ordered. Owners say rear rotors, pads, and calipers have been unavailable for over a year. The electronic parking brake can also apply on its own on slopes. In one crash the brakes did not respond, and the manufacturer blamed improperly installed aftermarket LEDs.

  • Acceleration and cruise control6No crashes

Adaptive cruise control brakes hard on the highway when Traffic Sign Assist misreads a lower speed limit, such as an off-ramp sign. The system lowers the set speed before the driver can reject it. The feature is on by default and has to be turned off after every restart. Some vans also slow sharply without cruise engaged when the pavement changes color or texture, such as going onto a bridge. In a minor issue, the speedometer randomly switches between mph and km/h at startup. Dealers often find no fault.

  • Automatic emergency braking6No crashes

Forward collision warning shuts off and will not restart. The fault is often logged as a sensor-blinded code tied to the forward camera. Repairs drag on through repeat dealer visits, replacement cameras, and calibration procedures that were unavailable. The serious risk is phantom braking. Vans brake on their own while merging or being passed and will not accelerate for several seconds, which has nearly caused rear-end collisions. Misread speed signs also set off aggressive braking under adaptive cruise. Problems show up early, as soon as 7,363 miles.

  • Body and structure5No crashes

The sliding side door can be hard or impossible to open from inside. Either it cannot be unlocked by hand, or a plastic interior lever fails to catch. Owners worry this could trap them in a crash or fire. Several camper conversion owners say rain pours past the cowl below the windshield and floods the engine bay. The water soaks electrical parts and headlights and brings up failure messages. One report describes a recall repair held up because parts were unavailable.

  • Engine2No crashes

Neither report describes a mechanical failure. Both describe a recall notice where the repair part is not yet available, and both owners say the manufacturer has taken too long to supply it. Each owner contacted a local dealer, but no repair has been done, and neither has had a failure. These reports point to a parts delay, not a pattern of engine or cooling breakdowns.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints ProMaster owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
Loosing power steering at 50,000 miles. Dealer states out of warranty. This should not be happening on less than a 3 year old promaster van. Total loss now. was happening randomly. driving 70 mph and hit a bump, steering would pull/jerk to the oppisite direction. also slower speeds as well, including reverse

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Steering
Sudden failure of the power steering system. Vehicle became very difficult to steer, lucky no other cars or pedestrians were in the area. Per the dealer water entered the wiring harness and entered the power steering module causing it to fail. When the power steering failed, warning messages began appearing on the dash, which included "hill assist needs service", "ECS needs service", "FWC system needs service" and "Engine needs service".

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Electrical
Sliding door of van will trigger as not closed randomly while driving. You will not be able to lock the doors if the warning is on. Cleaning contact points does not help.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Brakes
Electronic parking break automatically applies when the vehicle is in gear (drive/reverse) when beginning to drive up or down slopes. This limits drivers ability to control the vehicle when driving up or down hilly terrain. Problem has repeatedly occurred but dealer was not able to reproduce issue. There are no warning light or messages with this issue.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2022

Brakes
Absolutely ZERO service parts availability for over a year now for the REAR BRAKE SYSTEM. no Rotors, brake pads, caliper assemblies from any RAM dealer in the US. This is a relatively new vehicle, however we cannot service our brake system because RAM will not supply the market with service parts!

Filed with NHTSA, June 2023

Acceleration and cruise control
When driving on a freeway or highway, without cruise control on, & the pavement surface changes color &/or texture (eg: going onto a bridge/overpass) the vehicle will decelerate quickly & without us pressing the brakes. All the systems were checked by Dodge Ram & were showing no errors with software etc, as we thought this was traction control not working properly due to a software problem etc.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Acceleration and cruise control
Speedometer units and units used to set cruise control randomly change from MPH to km/h occasionally when the vehicle is started. No safety risk. Problem has occurred multiple times but dealer was not able to reproduce. There are no warning lamp associated with this issue.
