Which Silverado is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.7L 4-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
| 5.3L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 17–19 mpg |
| 6.2L 8-cylGas | 4WD | 17 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylDiesel | 4WD, RWD | 24–26 mpg |
| 5.3L 8-cylFlex fuel | 4WD, RWD | 17–18 mpg |
- The 2023 Chevrolet Silverado was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Silverado that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Chevrolet Silverado, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission86No crashes
The most alarming pattern is a hard downshift that briefly locks the rear wheels. It often happens between 30 and 55 mph, sometimes while towing, and can make the rear end skid or fishtail. Other reports describe shudder during gear changes, sudden drops to a low gear on the highway, a "Service Transmission" message, and limp mode. When no codes are stored, dealers often cannot duplicate the problem. Engine seizures and fuel module failures also show up here and shut the truck off in traffic. Once the engine dies, the electronic shifter will not go into neutral.
Engine84No crashes
Most of these reports describe the 6.2L V8 seizing. The engine quits at highway speed, often while towing, and the truck drops into neutral with little or no warning. Several trucks passed the recall inspection and got the oil change, then failed a few thousand miles later. Bearing failure is the most common diagnosis, and replacement engines can take months to arrive. Smaller groups of reports cover lifter-related misfires and a 3.0L diesel fault code that forces limp mode. One complaint is fire-related.
Most of these filings are about the engine recall, not a new failure. Owners say the recall repair was not yet available and the wait had gone on too long. When failures do occur, the engine stalls at speed or seizes, sometimes after the recall fix of thicker oil. Some replacement engines knock or tick. A few reports cover a coolant sensor fault followed by overheating and a stall. Another describes a leaking water pump with parts on backorder for more than 45 days.
Electrical391 crash
The clearest pattern is a power tailgate that releases on its own. It drops while driving, or it cycles open and shut overnight until the battery dies. Dealers trace some cases to water in the tailgate switch. In one crash, a tailgate lowered without the driver noticing and hit a wall. Other reports cover the infotainment system and speakers going silent, OnStar and telematics dropouts, a dead front turn signal, and brake system warnings with weak braking. In one fire, a parked truck that had not been driven burned.
Brakes92 crashes
The brake pedal sinks to the floor or the brakes stop working, sometimes with a "Brake System Failure" warning and sometimes with none. Two crashes followed this kind of failure at low speed, and one caused an injury. Other reports describe longer stopping distances with the ABS light on, and front pads worn to metal around 20,000 miles. Automatic braking can falsely lock the truck in park while backing out. One brake recall is still waiting on parts.
Exterior lights8No crashes
The front turn signal and daytime running lamp fail on and off, mostly on the left side. A "Check Left Front Turn Lamp" message appears and the rear signal flashes fast. The fault often clears after a restart, so dealers have trouble confirming it. One dealer blames software. Another says the next step is replacing the headlight assembly, which cannot be serviced separately. Failures show up as early as 4,000 miles. A couple of reports describe all lights briefly cutting out while driving.
Automatic emergency braking62 crashes
The most common complaint is phantom hard braking at highway speed with nothing ahead. It can also happen when passing cars parked on the shoulder. Adaptive cruise control is involved in both crashes. In one, the truck accelerated from a stop into the vehicle ahead with no warning. The other happened while driving into bright morning sun. One owner says collision warning and cruise control stopped working after a routine dealer service and needed a second visit.
Body and structure6No crashes
The tailgate opens on its own, both parked and on the road. It dumps cargo onto the roadway and strikes cars parked behind the truck. Some owners say a tailgate latch recall does not cover their trucks. On a 2500, the tailgate step cycles in and out because of water damage at about 41,000 miles. In one report, a hood latch broke on the freeway and the hood flew off. One fire report points to the firewall area behind the dash.
Steering51 crash
Power steering assist cuts out suddenly and the wheel becomes hard to turn. One case ends in a crash into a tree with arm injuries. Another happens at interstate speed but ends safely on a straight road. Other reports describe the truck swaying on grooved pavement, worse when towing, which a dealer blames on the factory tires. One owner reports a steady pull to the left that three dealer visits did not fix. Another describes a stall caused by the fuel pump control module.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Silverado owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The transmission has a shudder during gear change and at certain speeds. First noted to dealer at 7,500 miles and they could not duplicate. At 15,000 it is worse, they confirmed the issue but had no fix. New truck, they want me to just accept the problem for the moment and keep driving it. Not happy, distracting, wonder about damage being caused, and long-term impact. Will it quit on trip, middle of the night, etc.?

My truck has 50k miles and while driving down the road heard a loud pop and felt the truck jerk. Then the truck entered low power mode and the engine light turned on. I took it to the dealership and they are contributing it to the transmission valve body. Has been in the shop for 3 week so far and still no update when the part will be available.

I have found between the last two oil changes, I have had to add 1-1/2 to 2 quarts of oil. I first thought that maybe the oil was not refilled fully but after the second time I asked the dealer about this and they said that the engine may need up to 2 quarts of oil added between oil changes. SERIOUSLY?! I cannot believe this is normal for a new truck with less than 30,000 miles. There is no leaks in my driveway, no obvious exhaust smoke.

Engine oil cooler lines began leaking oil at 800 miles. Oil leak appears to be at engine connection for line. Took to dealer where vehicle was purchased. They added dye to engine oil and clean up evidence of leaks. Told me to drive for 300 miles and call if it leaked again. It leaked again and dealer is non responsive to request for repair. Will try another dealer. Leak is significant.

The vehicle mileage is 1,886. The vehicle steering command left or right turns had beautiful chime sound. The dealership could not find the signal chime commands. They claim that this vehicle doesn't have chime when turning right or left. This high-end truck has a lot features that dealership don't know about. This vehicle mileage is very good on the highway 22.4 miles per gallon.

GM Infotainment Center unreliable and comes on when it feels like causing a panic while you are driving. I have taken it to the dealer twice and was told it is a known issue with no help in sight. The truck has less than 2000 miles on it.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
While driving going 40 mph a ‘Brake System Failure’ warning came on and brakes stopped working. Thankfully there were no cars ahead allowing me to continue until the car came to a stop. At that point I engaged the emergency brake and put the car in park and out of gear. I then had the truck towed to a Chevy dealership. I still do not have a response to what the issue is.
