Which Tundra is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Toyota Tundra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.4L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
| 3.4L 6-cylHybrid | 4WD, RWD | 20–22 mpg |
- The 2022 Toyota Tundra was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tundra that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Toyota Tundra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine116No crashes
Sudden engine failure is the most serious pattern. Engines shut off or lose power at highway speed, sometimes with a knock, a low oil pressure warning, or smoke, and dealers find metal debris in the oil. Failures appear from roughly 27,794 to 75,000 miles. Some owners say a replacement engine failed too. Disputes over coverage and long waits for repairs are common. The other major thread is throttle hesitation from a stop, which a recall procedure or engine swap did not cure for several owners.
Parts shortages for engine recall 24V381000 drive these filings more than new failures do. Owners got the recall notice, but dealers had no parts, and many of these owners had not had a problem yet. Those who did have trouble describe stalling at 45 to 70 mph, power loss with check engine and reduced power warnings, rough idle, and engine knock. Some owners were denied recall coverage after the engine failed. Others waited a long time just to get the truck diagnosed.
Transmission901 crash
Throttle lag from a stop dominates these reports. The pedal goes dead for one to several seconds when pulling away from a stop or rolling stop. Then the truck surges or lurches forward, leaving drivers stuck in intersections and turn lanes. Many say it started when the truck was new and continued after a full engine replacement, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. Other reports cover the engine shutting off in traffic, a rear differential that locked up early in the truck's life, and one crash where a 4WD shift fault was followed by loss of steering.
Fuel system44No crashes
Pressing the gas from a stop often brings a delay of anywhere from half a second to 4 seconds before the truck responds and then surges. For several owners, dealer software updates and engine replacement did not fix it. The second pattern is the fuel gauge. It reads full after driving, sticks after the truck sits on an incline, or shows zero range with about 5 gallons still in the tank. Poor fuel economy and a fuel line recall still waiting on a repair also come up.
Waits for parts on fuel line recall 23V566000 make up the bulk of these filings, often from owners who have not had a failure. When the defect does show up, the fuel line rubs against the frame and leaks. Drivers report a strong gasoline smell, smoke from underneath, fuel on the ground, and loss of power at speed. Other reports cover a fuel gauge that reads full on a half tank and repeated stalls with a message to shift to park and restart.
Brakes21No crashes
Squealing front brakes and shudder under braking are the main problems, often from new. The vibration is worst at 50 to 60 mph and on long downhill grades, and rotors warp or need replacing. These complaints come in between about 4,500 and 30,000 miles. Dealers call it a known issue, but replacement parts stay on backorder for months or even years. Fewer reports describe automatic emergency braking with nothing ahead, brake malfunction warnings, a failed electronic parking brake, and a slow pedal response.
Acceleration and cruise control20No crashes
Accelerator hesitation from a stop or a creeping start fills most of these reports. The truck sits for 0.5 to 5 seconds, then takes off hard, sometimes spinning the tires. It happens with the engine hot or cold, often right after slowing to a roll. For some owners, recall work or a TSB fix did not last. Owners say sport mode shortens the delay. Separate complaints describe cruise control shutting off by itself and a truck that kept accelerating on cruise control despite repeated braking.
Electrical19No crashes
Total system failures are the most serious reports. The engine shuts off while driving or will not start, and the dash lights up with brake, parking brake, and pre-collision faults. More common faults include a digital instrument cluster that freezes or goes black, a fuel gauge that resets to full, and a digital rearview mirror that cuts out. Window and door lock motors fail, and the front active spoiler gets stuck. Waits for parts and repeat failures after TSB or recall fixes come up often.
Body and structure13No crashes
The skid plate over the gas tank breaks at its frame mount and drags on the road, sometimes more than once, with no sign it was hit. Several filings concern recall 23V142000 for the tonneau cover. Parts for that recall were unavailable, and one cover blew off at highway speed. Other failures include a sunroof that shattered at 75 mph and a side mirror camera that flew off. Owners also report a loose bumper and windshield molding and a rattle at idle.
Steering61 crash
Power Steering Malfunction and Steering Power Low warnings appear at random. More serious reports describe the whole truck shutting down on the highway, which makes it very hard to steer, including once while towing an RV. Owners whose engines were replaced under the recall report a ticking noise afterward, plus popping or vibration when turning at low speed. The one crash with an injury involves brakes and steering that the owner says did not respond.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tundra owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
My engine was replaced under the recall at 75,000 miles. One day and less than 100 miles later, the engine lost motive power on the upgrade side of an overpass on the highway at 75 MPH. The vehicle slowed so quickly that if other vehicles would have been near, it undoubtedly would have caused an accident. I had it towed to the shop and they are investigating the problem. I also called Toyota Corporate HQ and notified them about the problem.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2025
I've had a recall procedure done to correct an acceleration hesitation, but the problem still persists. When accelerating from a stop into traffic there is a significant acceleration pause before the pickup actually accelerates. I've had several close calls to being hit by oncoming traffic because of the inability to merge into traffic as planned due to the acceleration pause. The pickup currently has just over 56,000 miles on it.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2025
Have severe throttle lag and/or hesitation when giving gas from a stop. It causes a unsafe condition when you give it gas to go and it hesitates so bad I have almost gotten into accidents. This has been happening since new. Currently 30k miles on the truck.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
Since owning the vehicle, I still have long lag time when accelerating from a stop. Also, I’m experiencing bad vibrations in the rear of the vehicle which start 5/1/2023. ~10,000miles.
Filed with NHTSA, May 2023
Suddenly the gas gauge shows tank isfull even that it can be empty. I took the truck to the dealer for this issue, but it seems that there isn't a fix. I've heard some other Tundra owners have the same issue. This can be dangerous if I trust the gauge and forget to fill the tank before towing my 7k trailer.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2024
Ever since I got this truck, I’ve experienced intermittent hesitation/lag when accelerating from a stop. I’ve reported it to the dealer several times and am always told they cannot reproduce. The problem was NOT improved after the engine replacement. This is dangerous - when pulling into traffic I cannot always count on my truck actually MOVING when I press the accelerator.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2025
As I was coming down thew mounts (44 miles of 7-9% grade) as I slightly hit the brakes the truck shook so badly is was vibrating me off the road. The only way to avoid to to put strain on my engine as to manually shift it down to 3rd gear to forcibly slow the truck to a speed where this could be controlled. Causing overall traffic issues.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
Brake rotors warped at 30,000 miles. Thats ridiculous. I went 230,000 on my 2011 Tundra with the original rotors when I sold it. There is an issue with the braking system or the technician may have improperly torqued my lug nuts. I personally think Toyota has an issue.

Where the 2022 fits in the Tundra's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2022 is the first model year of the Tundra's third generation (2022–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Toyota fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
