Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Honda Ridgeline, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Exterior lights11No crashes

Automatic high beams switch on and off erratically, often like a strobe. Reflections from road signs and highway markers make them dim on empty dark roads, yet they often stay on or switch on as oncoming cars get close, glaring other drivers. Reports describe the problem from the time of purchase. Turning the feature off is awkward. Dealers find no fault codes and call it normal, and there is no sensitivity adjustment. Several owners say the same feature works properly on their other Honda models.

  • Electrical8No crashes

Losing all power at a stop is the main pattern. After auto start/stop shuts the engine off at a light, the truck goes completely dead. The dashboard, radio and even the hazard lights stop working, and restarting takes many tries. One truck needed a tow. Some of these reports come in under 1,500 miles. Dealers find no codes, and a replaced battery did not fix it. Other reports describe a delay when the engine stops just as the driver accelerates, driver-assist systems shutting off with a brake warning, and a recall delayed by a parts shortage.

  • Transmission3No crashes

Sudden limp mode is the main concern. The truck cuts power without warning and shows a long list of warnings covering the engine, transmission, AWD, brakes, stability and steering assist. Some events happen at red lights and in intersections. Another report describes the transmission dropping into neutral at 40 mph with a do-not-drive message, which left the truck stopped in heavy traffic. Dealers often just clear the codes. One report describes a dealer leasing out a truck with an open safety recall.

  • Backup camera3No crashes

Most of these reports are about recall 24V321000, not actual failures. The repair part is unavailable, owners wait well past a reasonable time, and one buyer could not take delivery because the recall was still open. One dealer said the camera had to fail before the remedy would be done. A separate report filed under this heading involves erratic automatic high beams. Replacing the multifunction camera did not fix that problem.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

The collision braking system sets off false alarms, mostly from oncoming cars on undivided two-lane roads and from road markers. When it triggers, the steering wheel shakes, a brake warning appears and the truck may brake on its own with nothing ahead, which creates a rear-end risk. Several false events can happen within a few miles. Dealers say the system is within guidelines. An alignment and a factory technician visit did not stop it.

  • Engine2No crashes

Stalling at idle is one pattern. The engine quits while stopped at red lights, but not every time, and only in idle mode. This lines up with the stop-at-a-light shutdowns described under the electrical system. A separate report describes a low-end knock between 1,000 and 1,400 rpm that sounds like a bearing. Both reports are short and give no repair outcome.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The brakes apply by themselves while the truck is moving. In one pattern, the truck will not accelerate at highway speed, several warning lights come on and the brakes engage, holding the truck under 30 mph. This repeated more than thirty times, starting at 137 miles. Another report describes ongoing false forward collision warnings and automatic emergency braking events. The dealer called them normal and blamed the county and state roads. Both raise a real rear-end collision risk.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Ridgeline owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Exterior lights
The auto dimming headlight feature is too sensitive. There is constant toggle of high and low beams when this feature in enabled. Any and all type of reflection from street and traffic signage trigger the lights to dim which causes the constant on and off of high beams. This causes distraction of both the driver of the affected vehicle and drivers of other vehicles in close proximity. Honda service said there is no way to adjust sensitivity setting.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Exterior lights
The auto High beam function on this vehicle is absolutely useless. It dims when it should be on. It dims needlessly for highway markers and road signs. The constant on and off of the high beams on a dark road with no other cars is dangerous. This system on the ridgeline is dangerous. I have the system on other cars and it works almost perfectly but not in this vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Electrical
Auto Start/Stop Malfunction. On two occasions the Auto start/stop has shut the engine off at a stop light and after releasing the brake the vehicle went completely dead. Dashboard/radio and all electronics dead. After multiple attempts the vehicle finally restarted. Now the normal start is sluggish like a low battery. Battery was replaced under warranty and check out multiple times by the dealership with them not able to find any issues.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Electrical
I attempted to have this recall address with no remediation. I went to the Dealer 2 months ago and called Honda's recall line and was told that Honda is not equipped to repair the vehicle due to a parts shortage.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Transmission
The vehicle went into neutral while I was driving at 40 mph. It then started showing errors on the gauge cluster. It said something about do not drive vehicle, transmission issue, see dealer. I took it to the dealer and all they did was clear the codes and give it back to me. I'm not comfortable with this since I was stopped in the middle of traffic on a 5 lane road at rush hour. It was very unsafe and I'm afraid it may happen again.

Honda (America Honda Motor Co) is recalling certain 2020-2024 Ridgeline vehicles. The rearview camera (RVC) tailgate wire harness may fatigue and break, which can prevent the rearview camera image from displaying.

Risk: A rearview camera that does not display an image can reduce the driver's rear view, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the RVC tailgate wire harness, free of charge. Owner letters were mailed November 8, 2024. Owners may contact Honda service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's number for this recall is YI7.
