  • Start the car cold and warm several times. Listen for clicking, buzzing, or sluggish cranking from the push-button start.
  • Ask for service records showing visits for stalling, idle-stop faults, or battery replacement under warranty.

Which MDX is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Acura MDX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.0L 6-cylAWD19 mpg
3.5L 6-cylAWD, FWD21–22 mpg
  • The 2024 Acura MDX was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A MDX that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Acura MDX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes61 crash

Hard braking kicks in on its own with nothing ahead, often while creeping into a driveway or garage. One hard stop left smoke coming from the brakes, and another threw a child into a seatback and cut her lip. Other reports describe the pedal sinking to the floor at a stop and staying there, plus one crash where the car surged forward while parking and the brakes did not stop it. Pads and rotors squeal early, with the steering wheel shaking. Dealers often find no error codes. One filing is about a lease repossession, not the brakes.

  • Electrical6No crashes

The engine shuts off at stoplights and the car shifts into park on its own. In some cases it drops into neutral while moving and shows a transmission warning. The push-button start can refuse to restart for up to 5 minutes, leaving cars stuck in traffic. One low-speed stall at 9,000 miles was traced to corrosion on a battery terminal. Other reports describe a slow rearview camera, a dead 360-degree camera and suspension mode, and false automatic braking. Wiring harness replacements did not stop the problems from coming back. Dealers often cannot reproduce the faults.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning, and the wheel becomes so stiff it barely turns. Each event sets off a string of warnings at the same time, covering collision mitigation, road departure, low-speed braking, all-wheel drive, brake performance, and stability assist. Some cars also barely move under throttle while this happens. Failures occur in traffic and on expressways, which creates a real risk of losing control. Dealers often cannot reproduce the fault and send the car back. One owner reports repeated sensor replacements before the steering failure.

  • Acceleration and cruise control3No crashes

Jerking at steady highway speeds shows up early, in one case at 2,500 miles, and that car later broke down several times. With cruise control on, speed sags noticeably on hills before recovering. In another case the car slowed from 55 mph to 6 mph without any warning lights, which leaves it exposed to being rear-ended. The throttle also lags when pulling away from a stop. Dealers usually cannot reproduce these faults, so the cars go back to owners without a repair.

  • Transmission2No crashes

Acceleration lags badly from a stop and when merging onto a highway. A computer reset did not fix it, and repeat dealer visits have not solved it. Other reports describe parking sensor and brake performance warnings along with false forward collision alerts. In one case a replaced front bumper sensor was followed by the auto brake hold failing, which let the car roll after stopping. Dealers have pointed to the lack of an official recall as the reason they cannot fix the delay.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints MDX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Brakes
Brakes and rotors began squeaking in all environments. Brakes began to warm and steering wheel would excessively shake. Brakes replaced at 8k miles. Brakes are now beginning to squeak at 12k miles. Brakes are out of warranty at this time.

Brakes
On more than several occasions the car has slammed on the breaks for no apparent reason. This has happened multiple times and thr dealer can’t fix the issue because the computer is showing no error. This is a serious concern for me as the last time it occurred a child hit her face on the back of the passenger seat causing her lip to bleed.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Electrical
I was lightly stepped on the gas coming off a complete stop with no cars in front of me. The automatic breaking came on hard and a sensor flashed to BRAKE as if I was going to hit someone but there was nobody in front of me. The sensor alert system was turned off 15min prior as I had gone through a car wash. This is the first time this has happened but unknown why. Had there been a car behind me, I may have been hit.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Acura dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2021-2025 Acura TLX, 2023-2025 Acura MDX, and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot vehicles. The brake pedal pivot pin was not secured properly, which can cause the pedal to shift out of position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment" and 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".

Risk: A brake pedal that shifts out of position can prevent the driver from applying the brakes as intended, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2025. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are FLX and XLY.
