Worth adding to your 2024 checks

  • Run the VIN for open recalls and ask the seller whether any open recall still has no remedy available.
  • On a long highway drive, keep Bluetooth and Android Auto connected and watch for black or restarting screens.
  • Drive with sunglasses on and glance right now and then to check whether the driver attention warning cuts adaptive cruise.

Which GV80 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Genesis GV80. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.5L 4-cylAWD22 mpg
3.5L 6-cylAWD20 mpg
  • The 2024 Genesis GV80 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A GV80 that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Genesis GV80, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The car loses all power while driving, then sometimes restarts itself seconds later. Reports also describe dead batteries that won't hold a jump start, a car that starts itself in a closed garage, and doors that won't open after the car sits for weeks. Dealers often find no fault or blame an unexplained parasitic battery drain, and repairs can drag on for months. Owners also mention unfixed software faults and trouble getting a replacement battery. A sudden shutdown at speed is a clear crash risk.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Automatic emergency braking kicks in with nothing ahead. It happens when leaves blow past, at highway speed, or when pulling away from a stop, and it can briefly lock the wheels. Adaptive cruise control may also fail to detect vehicles ahead. A separate report describes the brake pedal sinking to the floor at a stop on a hill, with a brake system warning, and the parking brake failing too. Both patterns carry a real risk of rear-end collisions or loss of control.

  • Wheels and tires2No crashes

A tire tears apart at highway speed. One injury is reported, on a car with fewer than 20,000 miles. The other complaint filed here actually describes the car shutting off on the freeway and dropping into neutral with no warning lights. The dealer said it needed a new transmission. That shutdown matches the reports filed under engine. Both failures happen at speed and create a serious crash risk.

  • Engine2No crashes

The car shuts off on the freeway and drops into neutral and accessory mode without warning, so the driver cannot accelerate. Other reports describe hesitation under acceleration, especially when turning at intersections. Dealers either cannot reproduce the hesitation after repeated visits or say the car is operating as designed. Losing power in traffic creates a real crash risk, and owners say the manufacturer is slow to respond.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints GV80 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Defective software issue that has not been corrected since owner took possession of vehicle. Customer/Client is told to deal with the Engineering dept. at Genesis Corporate and it is out of the hands of the dealer. The software effects a lot of moving parts and safety features within vehicle, I feel the vehicle cannot be trusted. No one follows up from dealer to National Customer Service for the brand. They need accountability immediately.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2023

Brakes
1. When starting from a stop the vehicle sometimes applies brakes with a collision warning, with no other vehicles in front or next to the car. This will repeat several times before the issue goes away. This has happened 4 times in the last 10 days. 2. When using adaptive cruise control the vehicle will not recognize vehicles ahead, even with the maximum following distance selected. This is almost always the case.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Engine
In March 2026, I was driving on the freeway when the car shut itself off and put itself into neutral and accessory modes. There was no warning. This put the safety of myself and other drivers on the road at serious risk because I was unable to accelerate or adequately control my vehicle without warning. The dealer says the car "is operating as designed."
