Which Tundra is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Toyota Tundra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.4L 6-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 19–20 mpg |
| 3.4L 6-cylHybrid | 4WD, RWD | 20–22 mpg |
- The 2025 Toyota Tundra was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tundra that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Throttle lag from a stop
600–2,200 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Toyota Tundra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission231 crash
Throttle hesitation from a stop is the dominant complaint. Drivers press the pedal at a light, stop sign, or yield and get no response for 1 to 3 seconds, sometimes longer. The truck then jerks or surges forward. Many describe near misses while turning across traffic or merging. One crash-related report describes a different fault: idle speed climbs after the brake is released and the truck creeps forward faster than expected. Stalling after stops also appears. One dealer could not duplicate the hesitation.
Engine13No crashes
Complete engine failure is the most serious pattern. Three reports describe the engine dying while driving, including at highway speed and around 50 mph, and refusing to restart. One cites a failed bearing, and another was told the engine needs replacement. Most other complaints repeat the throttle lag seen elsewhere: a pause or near-stall when pulling away or turning left, then a sudden lurch. One owner says Sport+ mode reduces the hesitation. A rough vibration at idle is also reported.
Acceleration and cruise control12No crashes
Delayed acceleration from a stop dominates here too, starting as early as 600 to 2,200 miles. Some trucks begin moving, then lose power and drift into the intersection before acceleration resumes, leading to several near T-bone collisions. Pressing harder after the delay can spin the tires. Separate reports describe a cluster of warnings for pre-collision, stability control, and the engine computer followed by very weak acceleration, and a speedometer reading 9 mph low at 55 mph.
Fuel system7No crashes
Throttle lag accounts for most of these reports. The truck hesitates 1 to 2 seconds from a dead stop even at full pedal, sometimes followed by lurching, and several near accidents are described. In one case the truck felt stuck in a high gear and barely moved until it was shifted to Park and back. A separate complaint concerns fuel economy, with real-world mileage near 14.6 mpg against EPA ratings of 18/23.
Steering61 crash
Sudden steering seizure is the most serious report here. One crash with an injury followed the wheel locking up, with steering warning messages before and after the impact. Another truck's wheel briefly locked during turns at about 4,605 miles. Lane assist complaints describe the truck bouncing between lane lines or drifting out of its lane without warning. One report documents severe outside-edge wear on all four tires at about 13,000 miles, with alignment measured out of specification.
Electrical61 crash
Throttle lag again makes up half of these complaints, including one crash-related report of the truck rolling into an intersection while ignoring the pedal. Other faults vary. The A/C switched from cold to hot air at idle with no alert while still showing as on, causing fatal heat injury to a pet. A power tailgate kept closing on a child's finger. Radar and traction control shut off while driving, disabling collision warning and lane assist until a restart.
Brakes4No crashes
Violent shaking under braking at highway speed is reported from warped rotors at around 10,000 miles. One dealer quoted $440 for rotor work and said it is seeing several low-mileage 2025 trucks with the same issue. Other complaints describe brake lights that stay off until the pedal is nearly halfway down and brakes applying on their own with a hard, jarring stop. A loud squeal on cold starts is reported on the Hybrid.
Exterior lights2No crashes
These complaints are mostly about recalls and dealer service, not new failures. One truck sat at a dealer under a stop-sale order with no resolution. Another owner reports brake lights and the backup camera not working, along with a dead media console and disappearing coolant, and says the dealer refused to perform the open safety recalls. Both reports center on getting recall work completed.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Tundra owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Several times when accelerating around traffic or cutting across the highway to work I have been nearly t boned when I'll step on the gas and the truck hesitates or does nothing. It usually hesitates for 3 to 5 seconds and then starts spinning tires or other times it will just start lightly accelerating no matter how much gas I give it. It's dangerous because the vehicle is so unpredictable and will eventually result in an accident.

Throttle lag When I accelerate from a stop, such as at a red light or stop sign, after I gently press down on the gas pedal, there is consistently a 1-2 second delay before the truck accelerates. This can cause potential delays in getting through an intersection, in turning in front of oncoming traffic, and getting going in traffic. This happens consistently since I’ve owned the vehicle since the summer of 2025.

Throttle lag. When I step on the gas pedal, there is a hesitation or lag which the truck doesn't move forward when asked. Very, very dangerous when entering traffic. Almost caused an accident. Not good. This must be addressed before someone gets hurt or killed. This is no joke and should be taken seriously. I hope this doesn't get ignored as this is a serious problem.

Continue getting a 1-2 second delay when accelerating from a dead stop after pushing on gas pedal with normal acceleration- not just an “lead foot” acceleration trying to quickly clear my intersection & merge into traffic. Happens when engine is at normal operating system or just pulling out of my neighborhood onto a 45mph road on a normal temp day.

Lags when accelerating from a full stop. At least 1-2 seconds. Extremely dangerous. I’ve got 600 miles on a brand new truck and it’s happened twice in the last 24 hours. I was nearly T-boned.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
Upon starting the vehicle on 8/6/2025 i received multiple warnings: advanced ultrasonic detecting and ranging system malfunction, Pre-Collision system malfunction, Parking Brake system malfunction, Check engine ECM malfunction, Vehicle stability control system malfunction Secondary collison brake system malfunction, It now take almost a mile on level ground to reach 45 mph. This occurred without warning. the vehicle was ok the day before when I parked it.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2025
The throttle lag is a major safety concern. When pulling way from a stop there is a huge delay in throttle response. This is consistent and has caused me to have several close incidents and nearly an accident. This is a programming issue that Toyota needs to address.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2025
From a dead stop truck is hesitant to accelerate. Pedal can be pushed all the way down and there is a delay about 1-2 sec. This is very dangerous it and has almost caused an accident a few times already. It only happens after a complete stop and go
