These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Tundra is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota Tundra. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.4L 6-cylGas4WD, RWD19–20 mpg
3.4L 6-cylHybrid4WD, RWD20–22 mpg
  • The 2024 Toyota Tundra was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Tundra that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota Tundra, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Engine60No crashes

Main bearings fail, which owners link to machining debris left inside the engine. Knocking or ticking comes first, then an "Engine Stopped" message and total loss of power, sometimes at highway speed and with heavy steering. Dealers find metal in the oil pan. Failures appear anywhere from about 7,500 to 33,000 miles. Owners whose trucks fall under the expanded recall report long waits for letters and parts, and some note that hybrid models are left out. Throttle hesitation, stalling, low oil warnings, and reduced engine power alerts are also common.

Most filings concern recall 25V767 and the reverse lamp recall 25V322, with owners saying parts are not yet available and the wait has run too long. Some recall notices went to people who never owned the truck. Several owners report real failures while waiting: stalling at 50 to 70 mph, a rough idle, no-starts, and metal shavings that required engine replacement. One front main bearing failure involved a truck whose VIN was not covered by an earlier engine recall.

  • Transmission59No crashes

The truck hesitates for one to two seconds when pulling away from a stop or a slow roll, then lurches forward, sometimes spinning the rear tires. Drivers report near misses at intersections and on inclines, and several say dealers called it normal or suggested sport mode. A smaller group describes the V35A engine shutting off at highway speed without warning, which also takes away power brake assist. Bearing failure and short block replacement come up around 31,000 miles, and recall 25V767 now covers this engine. Other reports cover a driveline shimmy at 40 to 65 mph and a hybrid that would not start.

  • Electrical24No crashes

The fuel gauge and miles-to-empty reading jump to full without any fuel added, most often after the truck is parked on an incline. It can happen within the first few thousand miles, and repeat dealer visits and meter reprogramming have not fixed it. Infotainment problems follow: blank screens, lost GPS, and backup or parking cameras that freeze or go black in reverse. Other reports cover a cracked front camera lens and reverse lights that do not work. Many filings here also describe throttle lag from a stop.

  • Acceleration and cruise control16No crashes

Pressing the accelerator gets no response for one to two seconds, then the truck surges as if the pedal were floored. It happens most from a stop, a rolling stop, or during left turns across traffic, and inclines make it worse. A few drivers report throttle cutting out entirely while passing at highway speed, with speed dropping sharply before power returns and the transmission engages harshly. One report says lag returned within 200 miles of a short block replacement. Dealers often find nothing or call the behavior normal.

  • Fuel system15No crashes

The fuel gauge resets to full, or near full, after the truck sits parked, especially nose up on a driveway or slope. It stays wrong until the next fill-up. At least one owner ran out of fuel on the highway, and others see miles-to-empty swing wildly. Toyota has blamed the position of the sending unit in the tank. Dealer software fixes have not held, and owners note the same fault on earlier model years. A few filings here describe throttle hesitation from a stop instead.

  • Brakes14No crashes

Brakes squeal or screech from the first weeks of ownership, and dealers call it a known issue while repair parts stay on backorder for months. More serious reports describe the pedal dropping to the floor with no warning light, sometimes around 3,000 miles. In one case a hybrid rolled backward on a hill until the parking brake was set. Dealers often cannot diagnose these, though one pulled a brake communication code. Others report pulsing brakes on downhill runs and automatic braking with nothing ahead.

  • Suspension5No crashes

Front tires wear quickly on the outer shoulder. One dealer inspection found front toe set out of spec from the factory at about 14,800 miles. One hybrid fractured both front CV axles at around 3,000 miles. The rear air suspension is described as dangerously unstable when towing on rutted interstates, and that complaint is flagged as fire-related. Another driver feels a thud at exactly 40 mph. With 5 complaints total, no single pattern dominates.

  • Airbags21 crash

Only 2 complaints are on file. In one crash, the truck hit a deer at 53 mph and the dashboard reported the air bags had deployed, but none did. Emergency braking and collision warning worked normally in that crash. The other complaint describes a loose or broken front seat cushion shield. Two reports are too few to show a trend, but the non-deployment report involves a real crash.

In owners' own words

Engine
While driving & coming to a complete stop, the vehicle lags like it has no power, this has happened to me more that 7, took it to the dealer, they said they cannot replicate it for me to record it , well that is hard to do, stopping & then giving the vehicle has but there is no power, since taking it to the dealer it has happened more than 5 other times, not sure what else to do, Vehicle has 16,000 miles purchased new .

Engine
Vehicle hesitates/loses power on take of from a stop started happening about 2 months ago 3/1/2025. Which causes the care to stop at intersections making it a huge risk to the passengers and other cars. Then last week the car had a low oil light. Dropped vehicle off at dealer they found no leaks or issues and added oil to the car and said to drive for another 1k miles and bring it back.

Transmission
Anytime I come to a yield/traffic circle and do not have to come to a complete stop, when I push the accelerator there is a hesitation and then the truck lurches forward. It happens quite often when I slow down to 5mph give or take before accelerating again. I would estimate it has happened 50 times since I have owned the truck which I bought with 300 miles on it.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Transmission
When at a complete stop, going to pull out, or continue driving, there is a noticable lag to the acceleration. It sometimes does nothing for a few seconds before acceleration. If backing up, then switching to drive,.there is a delay and or a small jerk motion before the vehicle accelerates. This has caused issues when pulling out and vehicles are coming at normal speeds with plenty of time to pull out. The delay has almost caused several accidents.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
Toyota has failed to deliver second key fob for vehicle operation. Purchased vehicle 5/4/24 and keep being told I will be notified in future about when 2nd key fob will be available. Cannot operate vehicle if fob lost and in area with no cell coverage. Dealership and corporate contacts have repeatedly changed the anticipated date of resolution, leaving no real sense of when issue will be resolved.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2024

Electrical
I am experiencing a recurring issue with my 2024 Toyota Tundra’s fuel gauge. Specifically, when the vehicle is parked on an incline, the fuel gauge resets to indicate a full tank, regardless of the actual fuel level. For instance, after parking on a hill with approximately half a tank, the gauge displayed full upon restarting the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Acceleration and cruise control
The safety issue I have is that my truck will display hesitation in moving forward or accelerating. I have been in a few intersections trying to turn left and when pressing on the gas pedal there is a delay in responding to the gas pedal being pushed. I’ve discussed this with the dealer and was informed that this is normal behavior. The dead pedal has me very concerned for my safety and the safety of others while driving my truck.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Acceleration and cruise control
On Wednesday 10/21 at approximately 11:30pm I was traveling on the Clearview Expressway. While changing from the middle last to the left lane at 20mph due to a construction merge with some traffic. When trying to accelerate the truck lost all throttle power and my speed quickly dropped to 12mph before throttle response came back. No noticeable or harsh change of gear for this episode.
