Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota 4Runner, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Running boards are too narrow to stand on comfortably. Only about 2 3/4 inches of the board extends past the body, so a foot barely fits, and a heel can slip off the rounded edge when stepping out. That creates a slip-and-fall risk, and the brackets offer no adjustment. A separate report describes a rear passenger-side seat belt strap detaching while driving at low speed. The dealer blamed misuse of a child safety seat and made no repair. With only 3 complaints filed, no broader pattern is visible.

  • Electrical2No crashes

Camera images come through distorted on the rear, front, and 360-degree views. That makes painted parking lines, pedestrians, and obstacles hard to see while parking. Another reported fault involves the key fob. Changing the volume of the lock and unlock beep can stop the fob buttons from working, so lock, unlock, and panic all fail. Proximity entry and push-button start still work. Fixing it takes a dealer visit. Reports describe this as a known issue since 2022 that Toyota has not treated as a recall. Neither problem poses a crash or fire risk.
