Which Wrangler is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Jeep Wrangler. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cylGas | 4WD | 21 mpg |
| 3.6L 6-cylGas | 4WD | 20 mpg |
| 6.4L 8-cylGas | 4WD | 14 mpg |
| 2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybrid | 4WD | 370 mi range |
- The 2024 Jeep Wrangler was sold in four versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Wrangler that averages well under the EPA 14 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Jeep Wrangler, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical3233 crashes
Battery fires are the most serious problem here. Several 4xe plug-in hybrids catch fire while parked or charging, some inside attached garages, and four reports are fire-related. Many filings cover high-voltage battery Recall 68C and engine Recall 78C, often with no remedy available and owners told not to charge or park near buildings. After the 68C fix or an over-the-air update, owners describe sudden power loss in electric mode, limp mode, and full shutdowns that take out power steering. Others report jerking, unexpected acceleration, and a backup camera screen that goes black or flickers.
Transmission146No crashes
Sudden loss of propulsion is the main complaint. The drive indicator flashes, a shift-to-park message appears, and the car coasts until restarted, often several times on one trip. Many reports tie this to an over-the-air update pushed on 10/10/2025, and some cars are towed in limp mode while dealers wait on engineering. After the Recall 68C update, owners describe weak acceleration on hills in electric mode, then a hard lurch when the gas engine kicks in. One fire-related report describes a leaking rear pinion seal sending smoke from the rear on a new car.
Engine691 crash
Stalling while driving tops this category. Cars shut off every few miles and show a flashing park-and-restart message. Acceleration is lost while the brakes still work, mostly after a Uconnect over-the-air update. Some stalls bring a service charging system warning that a dealer traced to a faulty power inverter. Many filings concern Recall 78C for engine sand contamination, with parts unavailable and no remedy date. Isolated reports cite a turbocharger fault at 300 miles, a throttle body failure, oil and fuel leaks, and one parking-lot crash from sudden acceleration.
Steering561 crash
Death wobble leads the steering complaints. The front end shakes violently after bumps or lane changes at highway speed, often starting around 60 mph, and it stops only when the driver slows down. Reports range from new cars within 40 miles of delivery to one at 38,000 miles. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and replacing the steering dampener does not always cure it. A second pattern is a total shutdown on 4xe models that kills power steering in traffic. One crash report blames a failed steering box for a fatal loss of control.
Acceleration and cruise control122 crashes
Unintended acceleration with the brake pressed caused both crashes in this category. One car hit a garage and house, and another pushed a car into a canal. Other owners describe a throttle that stays unresponsive, then jumps to near full power without warning. Most other filings describe stalling after the early October 2025 Uconnect update, with a flashing drive indicator, a shift-to-park message, and repeated restarts on a single trip. Limp mode with a red turtle light, capping speed near 5 mph, also appears.
Fuel system9No crashes
Power loss and stalling lead these reports. The red turtle, red wrench, and check engine lights come on, and a shift-to-park message appears after the October 2025 over-the-air update. Several 4xe owners find the hybrid battery will not hold a charge or electric mode stops working. One car repeatedly drops to 0% oil life and enters fuel and oil refresh mode every few hundred miles. Other filings are about recall delays, with no fix yet for the battery recall, orders not to charge, and higher fuel costs as a result.
Wheels and tires7No crashes
Early wear on the factory Nexen tires is the clearest pattern. Tread drops below 2/32 inch by about 16,500 miles, with chunking, steel belts showing through the sidewalls, and slow leaks. Nexen denies the warranty claims, citing off-road use or overinflation that owners dispute. Other reports describe a highway blowout at 70 mph with 8,600 miles on the tire, dry rot on all five tires at 20k miles, and a split tread causing a flat near 7,960 miles.
Brakes61 crash
The most serious pattern is the car lurching forward at low speed with the brake applied. In hybrid mode it jumps ahead while parking, and the one crash report ends with the Jeep through a garage wall. Other owners report brakes that fade until the pedal reaches the floor with ABS lights on, sudden hard stops that lock the tires, and lost power brakes after a software update. One owner paid for front brakes and rotors that rusted and broke down at 16,926 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Wrangler owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Over the air update on 10/10/25, disabled my Wrangler. Engine light is on, vehicle shuts down, turns off while driving, continuous error messages, unable to operate vehicle safely, it will not stay running while driving. Within 20 miles, it shut down six times while driving on the highway. As of this date and time, Jeep, Mopar, Stellantis have not offered any guidance, assistance or potential fixes.

The battery died multiple times and has been replaced costing multiple days without transportation. Battery caused additional part repair and has been recently repaired. This is the 5th time going into shop for recall/issues on my vehicle with only 10k miles on it. Now with the safety recall with no solution I do not feel confident that this vehicle is safe and reliable for my family and daily life.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2025
The car updated with the latest uConnect on Friday night. The next morning car drove fine for about .5 miles, the drive gear selector on the screen started to flash with no power to the car. The car had stopped accelerating in heavy traffic with no where to pull over on the side of the road. Performed same issues 3 times, after the third time the car went into limp mode. Had to be towed to dealer, it is currently in service on limp mode with no next steps
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
After a software update on 10/10/25, the Jeep Wrangler has become unreliable, with the hybrid powertrain failing while driving, leaving the driver and passengers in dangerous situations in traffic. This occurs at any speed and results in a total loss of the high voltage system, including motive force and power steering. This has happened in an intersection, while making an unprotected left turn, while in parking lots and other typical traffic situations.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
While driving home from Cincinnati to Chicago, approximately 15 miles from my final destination at a stop light, the engine shut down and flashed “service charging system”. I was unable to restart the vehicle. I was stuck in the middle of the road - unable to move. Had to be towed. Currently sitting at the dealership. Told that it has something to do with a faulty power inverter.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2024
After purchasing a new vehicle, 25 miles in a check engine hybrid system alert appeared. I returned the vehicle and was advised that this is an inherent problem with this vehicle and is part of a major recall and the parts needed are 6 months delayed!!
Filed with NHTSA, August 2024
Driving down the road with vehicles on opposite side and vehicle shut off with no warnings and had no steering. Had to turn vehicle on and off 3-4 times to get back to home. Had to get vehicle towed to dealership and now has 3 recalls on it and two have no remedy. It has been since October of 2025 since this has been going on with no fix, no solution, no reimbursement for payments still being made on a vehicle that is not drivable.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
While driving at highway speeds, the wheel started to wobble uncontrollably for 20-30 seconds. I lost fine control of steering had maneuver to the shoulder as I reduced speed the wobble immediately stopped. This is extremely disconcerting and dangerous. I noticed this happening months ago but wasn't sure if it was rough patches in the road or speed bumps. But almost losing control confirmed it was the vehicle.
