Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Land Rover Defender 110, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering5No crashes

Power steering quits, either at startup or while driving. Most reports trace this to the DC/DC converter. An "Electric Fault Detected" warning appears, then the gearbox drops into Neutral, warning lights fill the dash, the parking brake stops working, and the vehicle shuts down. Some cars start with the steering wheel locked or very hard to turn. Replacement converters have failed again, and owners report backordered parts with no timeline. One of the 5 complaints describes the vehicle catching fire with no warning lamps beforehand. It gives no cause.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The 48v to 12v DC/DC converter stops charging the 12-volt battery. The dash shows "Electrical fault detected. Please find a safe place to stop," and ABS and adaptive cruise warnings follow. Power then fails completely. Reports describe brakes locking, no steering, a car that cannot be shifted into Neutral, and stalls in a travel lane. Jump-starts fail, and the vehicle needs a tow. Replaced converters fail again after repeat dealer visits. Separate complaints describe a black display screen after a software update and a driver display that dims too early at dusk and becomes unreadable.

  • Backup camera2No crashes

The center touchscreen sometimes stays blank when the vehicle starts. Because the cameras display on that screen, the rear backup camera, forward camera, and Birds Eye view all disappear, and the rear parking sensors may stop alerting. Restarting the car or holding the infotainment power button does not bring the screen back. It has returned only after the vehicle sat off for an extended time. Owners report multiple dealer visits with no lasting fix.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Defender 110 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
Yes, my car caught fire. It's at an impound currently. My clothes caught fire when I tried putting it out. The car could have been parked in my garage or been in NYC, with a full tank of gas, that would have caused serious damage. My insurance company is sending an investigator to look into it today. No, warning lamps, messages or symptoms.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Steering
I was ready to leave for work and started the car. The steering wheel was locked and would not turn left or right. The car could be put in gear but, the steering wheel not move. I turned the car off several times and nothing helped. Hopefully, this will not happen while driving. Had to drive my other car to work.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2023

Electrical
Near dusk, the driver display (speedometer, tachometer, fuel gauge , etc.) automatically dimes to night mode and becomes unreadable. Turning the rheostat controlling display brightness does nothing. Very dangerous. Display should only go to night mode when conditions are actually dark.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Backup camera
Infotainment screen intermetittetly doesn't work which then prohibits the use of the backup camera(s). Worried about the lack of visibility in reverse. Multiple service trips to the dealership with no resolution.
