Which Altima is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Nissan Altima. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylFWD29 mpg

  • The 2023 Nissan Altima was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Altima that averages well under the EPA 29 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Nissan Altima, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical10No crashes

Backup camera screens turn gray or bright white in reverse. Sometimes an image shows for a few seconds on a cold car, then fades. Reports put the start between under 8k and about 10,000 miles. Other complaints describe dead batteries, an alternator that fails at 33,214 miles with no dash warning, and a body control module failure that leaves the car unable to start. Owners also report the key fob going undetected, the car shutting off while driving, an emergency braking warning light, and loud bangs through the speakers. Dealers often cannot reproduce the faults.

  • Brakes22 crashes

Crashes follow braking problems in both filings. In one, the car fails to stop behind a vehicle that braked suddenly. The owner suspects the sensors did not detect the stopped car, and says the car has also braked on its own before. In the other, the ABS warning light comes on at 10 MPH on a snowy hill. The ABS then engages, and the car jerks and veers off the road into trees. Neither report lists injuries.

  • Engine2No crashes

Oil leaks near the oil pressure switch. In this report the leak turns up during a routine oil change, the dealer confirms the switch is faulty, and a mechanic calls it a known problem. The other complaint describes frequent stalling while driving, including in busy intersections and at stop lights, plus no-starts after the car sits parked. Repeated dealer visits find nothing wrong. Stalling in traffic is a crash risk.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

The rear windshield shatters without warning at highway speed, with a loud bang and no earlier sign of damage. That kind of sudden failure can startle a driver into a crash. A separate complaint describes distorted glass in the driver and passenger side windows that causes eye strain and dizziness. The owner noticed it on a certified pre-owned car with 800+ miles, during the drive home after a test drive.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Altima owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Backup camera for no reason failed. Screen is bright white when in reverse. Occasionally when the car is cold and reverse is quickly selected image will be seen for a few seconds then fades to all white. Backup camera only. Car has less than 8k miles no accidents.

Electrical
Attempted to start 2023 Nissan Altima. Engine did not turn over. Dashboard lights came on and then shut off. No further response. Had Altima towed to Nissan Dealer and after two weeks of sitting at the dealership. We were informed that the BCM unit needed to be replaced and fobs reprogrammed. Cause of BCM FAILURE UNKNOWN.

BrakesCrash reported
A car slammed on brakes in front of me and I hit the brakes but my car still hit the other car messing it up pretty badly. No one was hurt but the car has stopped automatically before, it’s like the sensors couldn’t tell I vehicle had stopped or was even in front of me.

Engine
My mechanic noticed oil leaking near the oil pressure switch during a routine oil change. Told me to take it to dealership since I should still be under warranty. When I took it in, they very quickly were able to access that the oil pressure switch was faulty. Mechanic said it is a known problem. If it is a known issue, why not recall it?!

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Wipers and visibility
I purchased my certified-preowned 2023 Nissan Altima on 12/9/2023 at 800+ miles. I did test drive it before my purchase, however I did not notice the defect in the driver and passenger side windows until my 45 minute drive home. The windows are defective and distorted my vision causing eye strain and dizziness.
