Which Navigator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Lincoln Navigator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Navigator that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Lincoln Navigator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission4No crashes

The transmission slips into neutral or drops out of gear while driving. Power cuts out for several seconds, then the drivetrain slams back into gear and the vehicle surges forward. Reports describe this at highway speed and while accelerating to merge or pass, with near rear-end collisions and stalls in intersections. Warnings such as Shift System Fault and Powertrain Malfunction appear on the screen, sometimes only after the event. Some owners say the problem came back after a transmission overhaul or a transmission valve repair.

  • Engine4No crashes

Sudden engine failure at highway speed with no prior warning appears in one report, and the driver had to coast across several lanes of traffic to reach the shoulder. Most engine complaints, though, are about an engine recall notice, not a breakdown. These owners say the repair part was unavailable, dealers could not give a timeline, and the wait has run far too long. Several say they have not had a failure themselves.

  • Wipers and visibility3No crashes

The passenger-side wiper arm works loose and in one case flew off while driving in the rain. Owners also say the arm will not return to its proper position after being lifted to clear snow, even after several tries. A separate complaint describes a driver-side wiper failure tied to a recall notice, with the dealer confirming parts were not available. A wiper that detaches in rain or snow can leave the driver with little forward view.

  • Steering3No crashes

Power steering can suddenly turn heavy and make the wheel hard to turn. In that report the instrument display also became distorted, the brake light stayed on, and the vehicle would not accelerate properly, at 19,000 miles. The power tilt and telescoping column can grind during memory or manual adjustment, and owners report that the dealer fix is a full column replacement costing $1700.00. Another complaint filed here describes a rough ride and lane jumping traced to strut, driveshaft, front differential, and transmission faults.

  • Backup camera21 crash

The backup camera image cuts out. One of the 2 complaints is crash-related: the camera failed while reversing at about 2 MPH and the rear bumper scraped a garage entrance. That owner was also waiting on a recall repair with parts unavailable. Another complaint says the camera stops working in a hot cabin until the interior cools for a few minutes. Losing the rear view while backing up raises the risk of hitting objects or people.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Navigator owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Transmission
Within one week of delivery of this new vehicle, the transmission began slipping out of gear and the car loses power for 30-40 seconds in the middle of driving. Shift System Fault, Transmission failure, and PowerTrain Malfunction are the errors coming up on the screen- even after the vehicle was in Service for 2 weeks and they replaced the transmission valve system. Very dangerous to completely lose power on the highway.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2021

Transmission
Navigator transmission goes into neutral when accelerating at speeds of 50+. Trans completely overhauled. Still does it. Almost had 2 accidents when changing lanes on the freeway, trying to accelerate and instead slowing down with cars behind fast approaching . When trying to pass on a 2-lane hwy, this would be deadly.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2025

Wipers and visibility
Passenger whipper arm is loose especially when you lift the arm to clear snow from the windshield it will not align it its original location without multiple attempts.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Where the 2021 fits in the Navigator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the fourth model year of the Navigator's fourth generation (2018–2024).

Lincoln updated the Navigator for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)

  • Introduced new 13-inch center touchscreen
  • Enhanced features like BlueCruise and interior updates
