Which Navigator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Lincoln Navigator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.5L 6-cyl4WD, RWD18–19 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Navigator that averages well under the EPA 18 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Lincoln Navigator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission14No crashes

The 10-speed automatic slips, hesitates, and sticks in the wrong gear, then slams into gear late. The reports describe shudder at 17 to 23 mph on inclines, engine revving without the car pulling away from lights, and the car coasting as if in neutral while passing or turning into traffic. Several drivers report near rear-end collisions. Problems appear as early as 20,000 to 31,000 miles. Repeat dealer visits often fail to fix it, and some cases end in a rebuild. A smaller group ties reduced power and misfires to timing chain and cam timing faults.

  • Seat belts101 crash

Seat belt pretensioners fire without a crash. Drivers hear a loud bang, smell smoke or gunpowder, and feel the belt cinch hard across the chest. Two complaints report bruising injuries. Other belts lock up, refuse to extend, bind, or stop retracting, in both front and second-row seats, which leaves that seat unusable. Many complaints focus on long waits for a recall repair, with dealers saying the part is not yet available. Failures show up anywhere from under 10K miles to about 97,000.

  • Electrical7No crashes

The digital instrument cluster goes blank at startup and hides speed and fuel level, then comes back on its own. Dealers struggle to reproduce it and find no error codes. Backup, front, and 360-degree camera views stop displaying. Other reports cover dead brake lights and front emblem lighting, a failed heated seat, a telematics unit replacement quoted at $1181, and the engine shutting off in Drive with an auto start-stop message that the dealer blamed on low battery voltage.

  • Engine7No crashes

Cold starts bring a loud rattle, ticking, and shaking. Dealers diagnose failed cam phasers or variable cam timing parts. Drivability also suffers, with hesitation and slow gear engagement, and one report ends in a blown engine. Failures cluster around 75,714 to 83,000 miles, including on vehicles with regular oil changes. Several owners say they were denied coverage for the repair. They describe quotes from $1,000 to $4,500 and weeks of waiting in dealer service lots.

  • Airbags21 crash

In one rear-end crash at 40 mph, the air bags fail to deploy and the seat belt pretensioner does not work as intended. The driver and two children suffer bruising from the belts. A separate report describes the restraints warning light coming on every time a passenger buckles in, including while driving. The dealer could not find the cause. With only 2 complaints, no broader pattern is visible.

  • Steering2No crashes

Control is lost while driving, with or without a turn, and the wheel feels completely disconnected from the wheels. Only one report describes this. The other complaint covers a vehicle that overheats, leaks fluid, and smokes within hours of delivery. A ticking noise follows, then a clunk and movement felt under the driver's feet, and the dealer replaced an axle and bearings. With only 2 complaints, no wider pattern shows.

  • Wipers and visibility2No crashes

Sunroof glass shatters while the car is moving. The break comes with a loud, explosion-like bang and no obvious impact. One case happens near 75 mph at about 45,000 miles and leaves a hole in the rear sunroof. Another happens two weeks after purchase. The sudden noise can startle the driver, and falling glass is a risk if the shade is open. Neither report says the sunroof was repaired.

  • Backup camera2No crashes

Neither complaint describes a camera failure. Both concern a backup camera recall notice for which the repair part is not yet available. Owners say dealers confirmed the shortage and put them on a waiting list, and they feel the wait has gone on longer than is reasonable. The complaints are about parts supply and delays, not a malfunction they experienced.

Transmission
Have had Navigator in shop (at dealership) six times for drive train/transmission/seat belt recall and it is not repaired. Last repair has not even been driven 200 miles after dealership having vehicle for 5 weeks.

Seat beltsCrash reported
this recall is taking a long time to get fix and i don’t think this company is going anything to hurry up , and to be honest im not even feel safe to drive this car. the recall is been done for over 6 months allrdy

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Seat belts
The MIDDLE row passenger seat belt locks in place. We took it to the Lincoln dealership in San Antonio Texas and this is what their report states: Found internal failure with seat belt mechanism causing seatbelt to bind. Recommend to replace and retest. But there is no safety recall on it so they want to charge $947 to fix it. Yet, the exact same thing happened to our FRONT seat passenger seat belt! But that was fixed because of a recall.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Electrical
could not get the lincoln way app to work, took vehicle to mark Mcclarty Lincoln dealership and was told the tcu (the unit that controls the communications in the car) needed to be replaced and the cost including parts and labor is $1181, concerned that vehicle won't report critical information as is intended to maintain safety of vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Electrical
The entire electrical panel went out and therefore I was unable to see the speed I was going, how much gas I had, etc. This happened after I turned my truck back on at the gas station. It was working fine prior to turning vehicle off. The panel was out for a day then came back on.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2024

Engine
Cam phasers have started to fail. Vehicle has been meticulously maintained and well taken care of. Ford even did the recall with a reprogram to supposedly fix the issue back in 2022. We always change the oil between 5,000 and 6,000 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2023

Engine
No warning light on dash. Issues engaging in gears. SUV failed to shift in gear and engine rev up And takes 2 to 10 seconds to catch again before engine engages. No accidents yet. Additionally, during cold start my SUB is making a rattling and ticking sound and the SUV would shake. There were no engine failure or warning lights that came on and the engine doesn’t sound like it’s running correctly.

How the 2019 compares with other Navigator years

Complaints for this year next to the average for the other model years, area by area.

The 2019 has the most owner complaints of the 8 Navigator years we cover, about 3.0 times the average of the others. Newer years have had less time to collect complaints, so compare like with like.

2019 Average of other years
  • Transmission144
  • Seat belts100
  • Electrical73
  • Engine72
  • Airbags20
  • Steering21

Where the 2019 fits in the Navigator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2019 is the second model year of the Navigator's fourth generation (2018–2024).

Lincoln updated the Navigator for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)

  • Introduced new 13-inch center touchscreen
  • Enhanced features like BlueCruise and interior updates

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any Lincoln dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V197000Seat beltsMay 2025

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2020 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles. The seat belt pretensioner in the driver and/or front passenger seat may inadvertently lock the seat belt, which will not allow the belt to retract or extend.

Risk: Seat belts that do not retract or extend can fail to restrain an occupant as intended, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Dealers will inspect the seat belt retractor date codes and replace the seat belt retractors as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 22, 2025. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 25S31. Some vehicles in this recall that were previously inspected under recall 24V-099 and did not have parts replaced will need to have this new recall remedy completed.

  2. 23V598000Backup cameraAug 2023

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Lincoln Aviator, 2018-2021 Lincoln Navigator, 2022-2023 Ford Transit, and 2021 Ford Bronco vehicles. The rearview camera, or 360-degree view camera if equipped, may not display a rearview image when the vehicle is placed in reverse.

Risk: Loss of the rearview camera image can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the rearview camera, and update the software and wiring as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 20, 2023 to Lincoln owners. Ford vehicle owners notification letters were mailed March 4, 2024. Ford remedy parts are anticipated 2nd Quarter 2024. Ford's number for this recall is 23S48.

  3. 19V773000SuspensionOct 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019 Expedition and Lincoln Navigator vehicles. The rear suspension toe link fasteners may not have been properly tightened to the frame, possibly allowing separation from the frame.

Risk: A disconnected toe link can cause a sudden change to vehicle handling, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Ford has notified owners, and dealers will inspect and tighten the rear toe link fasteners, check and adjust the rear toe alignment, and inspect the rear tires for abnormal tire wear, replacing them if necessary. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began November 14, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19S36.

  4. 19V076000ElectricalFeb 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2019 Ford Mustang, Lincoln Nautilus, and Lincoln Navigator vehicles. At vehicle start-up, the Instrument Panel Cluster Assembly (IPC) may not function, showing a blank display. As a result, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 101, "Controls and Displays.".

Risk: A blank instrument cluster will not show important information like vehicle speed, fuel or temperature level, or safety system warnings. Driving with an inoperative cluster can increase the risk of a crash.

Fix: Ford has notified owners, and dealers will reprogram the Instrument Panel Cluster Assembly (IPC), free of charge. The recall began March 8, 2019. Owners may contact customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C03.
