  • The 2022 Land Rover Defender 110 was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Defender 110 that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Land Rover Defender 110, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical201 crash

The DC-DC converter fails and the battery stops charging. Warnings such as "Stop Safely Electrical Fault Detected" and low-battery alerts come first, then the vehicle shuts down completely, sometimes while moving in traffic. Steering, transmission and suspension faults often appear together. A new 12V battery does not fix it, and the truck usually needs a tow. Many reports describe replacement parts on backorder, with vehicles stuck at dealers for weeks or months. Separate reports describe automatic emergency braking activating with nothing ahead, plus headlight, door lock and air suspension faults.

  • Wipers and visibility12No crashes

The windshield cracks with no impact. It happens while parked, while being washed, or on hot, sunny days. Cracks usually start at the top center or a lower edge and spread across the driver's view, sometimes through the camera area. Several appeared within the first 5,765 to 8,000 miles or the first few months of ownership. Others say tiny pebbles crack the glass easily. Dealers and the manufacturer have declined warranty coverage in some cases, leaving owners to pay out of pocket or through insurance.

  • Exterior lights7No crashes

The LED daytime running lights burn out. It often happens to both headlights, after about a year or two of use. No dashboard warning appears, so owners only notice by looking at the car. The fix is a full headlight assembly that owners quote at $3,000 to $5,000 once the warranty ends. Some say replacement units fail again, and headlamps can be back-ordered for months. A separate report describes both taillights shutting off when a bright light hits them, staying off until the vehicle is restarted.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering stops working at startup, usually after the vehicle has sat for a while. A "lane assist not available" message is often the only warning. The steering wheel will not turn even though the vehicle can still shift into drive and reverse. Restarts rarely help, and dealers have trouble finding a cause. One report also describes the engine dying repeatedly at red lights, both before and after a battery-related repair. Owners worry the steering could fail at speed.

  • Transmission3No crashes

The engine stalls or the vehicle loses all power with little or no warning. One pattern involves auto stop/start: the engine shuts off at a light and then stalls several times when the driver tries to pull away. Other reports describe electrical and transmission failure warnings followed by a full shutdown within seconds, including at highway speed, leaving the vehicle stranded in traffic. A DC-DC converter failure is a diagnosed cause, and repairs took weeks.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

The driver-side A-pillar trim comes loose and falls off at highway speed. A trim piece of around 20 inches can flap in the wind or fly off completely, forcing an immediate stop. Warranty repairs do not always hold, and the same pieces have come off again within a month. In one case a detached piece struck another vehicle, so this is a road hazard for other drivers too.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Defender 110 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Electrical fault detected - pull over safely error message appeared while driving, and when vehicle was shut off, low battery warning appeared. Started vehicle and attempted to put in drive and failed with drivetrain error, then suspension error and power steering error. Replaced 12V battery next morning and still received electrical fault error. Towed to dealer and diagnosed with DC-DC converter failure.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Electrical
The vehicle experienced an electrical issue regarding a DC/DC converter that went bad after the manufacturer software update. Wipers and visibility
My land Rover Defender is 5 months old with 5,765 miles on it. Driving through the car wash today the windshield "popped" and a large crack started in the top center and spread out both directions in what looks like a mustache. No chip, vehicle was not moving and the windshield failed. Unacceptable.

Wipers and visibility
I Have a 2022 Land Rover defender 110 and it had 8,000 miles on it. One day I was driving and the windshield just cracked, nothing had hit it and no visible chips were present. I have yet to receive a replacement windshield.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2022

Exterior lights
The LED DRLs failed in the first 28000 miles leaving no DRLs. Researching this issues shows it it a known defect but not considered a safety issue. I disagree as visibility is greatly diminished without the lights. Numerous online complaints and LRJ reuses to compensate owners out of warranty.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2026

Exterior lights
The Daytime Running Headlights have gone out once again. This is such a common issue with the Land Rover Defenders yet, the manufactures force the customers to pay $3000 to $5000 to replace. Police will pull you over for this issue ask they think you headlight is completely out.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Steering
Power steering failed upon starting the car after 12 hours of non use. The lane assist light came on saying it was unavailable. Upon first starting it did not move in drive or reverse but was able to after a few restarts but the steering was still failing. I am worried about the steering failing while driving.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Steering
Went to turn on vehicle and experienced a complete shutdown of power steering system. Lane assist not available message was the only error presented.
