Which EV6 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Kia EV6. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, RWD | 282–310 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 282–310 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
12V battery dies, car stranded

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Kia EV6, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical56No crashes
The car loses power without warning, and most reports trace it to a failed integrated charge control unit (ICCU). The usual sequence is a pop, then "Check electric vehicle system" and "Stop vehicle and check power supply" warnings. Speed drops to about 25 mph in turtle mode, then the car dies. Hazard lights, neutral and door locks can stop working, leaving the car stuck in traffic. Several 12V batteries die between 8,000 and 22,000 miles. Failures happen after recall software updates, and some repeat after replacement. Parts back orders mean waits of weeks. A few owners report weak cabin heat that cannot clear the windshield.
Transmission17No crashes
Propulsion cuts out while driving, often on highways or in snow, and most cases are traced to the ICCU. Owners describe a pop, a turtle icon or "Power Limited" message, speed capped near 25 to 30 mph, and then a full shutdown with no start or unlock. Several owners have repeat events, some after the 12V battery was replaced around 8,000 miles. Dealers sometimes cannot replicate the fault, and recall campaigns do not prevent later failures. Isolated reports cover a failed rear motor inverter, an electric oil pump fault that roughens the ride, and DC fast-charging errors.
Fuel system42 crashes
The motors shut off after the car drives through slush on a freeway, cutting both acceleration and regenerative braking for nearly 50 seconds with no warning. That report involves a crash after the car lost traction. A second crash report describes the car accelerating when the brake was pressed during parking. Other complaints follow the familiar ICCU pattern: warnings, turtle mode, then full shutdown. One owner reports range dropping sharply in cold weather and being stranded for 3 hours.
Brakes4No crashes
Braking behaves unpredictably. At about 25 mph on dry pavement, the rear wheels feel like they lock and the car skids past a stop sign. Another report describes grinding, brief violent vibration and abrupt braking the driver did not command, and the problem returns after a dealer repair. The i-Pedal one-pedal mode disengages unexpectedly and forces a sudden switch to the brake pedal. During hard i-Pedal deceleration, the brake lights stay off unless the driver fully lifts off the accelerator, so following drivers get no signal.
Wheels and tires3No crashes
Tire failures come without warning. One report describes a rear tire deflating instantly at highway speed on a smooth road at correct pressure, with 11556 miles on the original Continental Cross Contact 255-45 R20 tires. Another describes vibration bad enough to make the car hard to control. Balancing did not fix it, and the cause turned out to be the tire's foam liner, which had separated and balled up inside. The volume is small, but both failures affect control at speed.
Engine3No crashes
No complaints here describe a motor failure. One owner adds coolant three times in 49 days, and no diagnosis has been made because the dealer lacks available technicians. Another reports charging and battery-management faults that cause range discrepancies, along with a coolant problem. The third is a dealer mix-up over recall 24V867: the dealer alternately claims no knowledge of it and books an appointment to complete it.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints EV6 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Issues with 12v battery dying with only 8,000 miles on vehicle. Knowing Kia requests an all day testing of the battery prior to replacing the 12v, I replaced it with a higher quality one. My car still did not start not long after that. Lots of folks online with similar issue and feels like Kia needs to do a recall with a known good fix. Blame put on 3rd party apps when it’s a design flaw.

ICCU failed at 30,200 miles disabling vehicle on street in front of my house. Date 1/27/2025. Towed to Dealet. Waited 8 wks for repair due to parts back order.

The ICCU in my Kia EV6 failed while driving. Thankfully I was not involved in a crash, but my speed was capped at 30 MPH, crawled back home, where the vehicle wouldn't start. I had to get it towed to the service center. All of this besides all recalls and software updates being addressed. There were multiple warning lights that went off during my drive: "Stop vehicle and check power supply" "Check electric vehicle system"

On January 23 2025, while driving on the highway, the car lost power an had limited control. The car was towed to a dealer and it was determined that the ICCU failed. The car was at the dealer three weeks earlier for a recall related to the ICCU (ICCU (SC273A VCU SW LOGIC UPGRADE (VSC) • SC273A and ICCU INSPECTION/REPLACEMENT • SC302 ). Obviously, the recalls did not prevent the ICCU failure.

I was driving on a residential street at fairly slow speeds, like 25 mph. There was a stop sign so I engaged the brakes and the car did not smoothly slow down but instead it felt like the back tires locked up and a skid started and I actually went into the intersection before coming to a stop. There was no ice, no sand, just the road surface and the skid in the rear of the vehicle.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2026
While using I-Pedal mode the brake lights do not engage unless fully off of the accelerator. Even a large deceleration force does not engage any of the brake lights when coming to a full stop quickly. This is very dangerous as drivers behind cannot tell you are decelerating quickly.

Where the 2023 fits in the EV6's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2023 is the second model year of the EV6's first generation (2022–2024).
Kia updated the EV6 for 2025, so a 2023 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2025 (not on a 2023)
- New angular-designed LED headlights
- Redesigned front fascia
- New alloy wheel designs
- Revamped interior with a revised curved panoramic screen
- New fingerprint authentication system
- Updated technological features
