Which EV6 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Kia EV6. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD, RWD274–310 mi range
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 274–310 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

  • Early ICCU failure, power loss

    10,000–14,000 miles

  • Later ICCU or power fault

    58,000–64,300 miles

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Kia EV6, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical1333 crashes

Sudden loss of drive power from a failed integrated charge control unit (ICCU) dominates these reports. A "check electric vehicle system" warning appears, then speed drops to 10 to 25 mph, and the car shuts down and will not restart. The 12-volt battery is often dead too. Failures show up as early as 10,000 miles and as late as 58,000. Some cars wait weeks for parts, and one sat at the dealer six months. Other reports describe home charging that stops, range lost after a recall software update, phantom braking in HDA, and surges in parking lots. Three of those surges ended in crashes.

  • Transmission311 crash

Total loss of drive power, nearly always traced to a failed ICCU, runs through these reports. Cars quit in city traffic, at intersections, or while backing out, sometimes after a clunk from underneath. The screen, gears, and doors can stop working. Many cars also stop charging on Level 1 or Level 2 and drain the 12-volt battery. Reported failures range from about 11,200 to 64,300 miles. Several owners describe a second failure after the recall software fix or an earlier ICCU replacement, and warranty disputes are common. One crash involved a car rolling while parked on a hill.

  • Body and structure7No crashes

Panoramic sunroof glass shatters while driving, with a loud bang, on a hot day or at highway speed. One report led to an ER visit. The power liftgate opens and then immediately closes again, hitting people on the head, and two injuries are reported. Other owners describe a misaligned tailgate that will not close when the car is parked off level, and a frunk lid that popped to the ajar position in traffic. Minor grille damage from road debris triggered active air flap warnings and a repair of nearly $6,000. Warranty claims are sometimes denied.

  • Brakes71 crash

Brake lights stay off during strong regenerative braking in one-pedal mode unless the driver's foot comes fully off the accelerator. Other reports describe a loud crunch or clunk followed by the car lurching forward at stops or losing propulsion on the freeway with reduced braking. Dealers cannot reproduce it and find no codes. The parking brake can set itself in one-pedal mode with the hatch open, and the car can roll back on a hill with the brake pressed. One crash followed severe ABS shudder over a rut, with the car sliding forward on dry pavement.

  • Exterior lights6No crashes

Brake lights fail to come on under heavy regenerative braking in i-Pedal mode, even when the car comes to a full stop. Owners confirmed this with a following driver and an OBD2 tool. Weak headlights are the second theme. Owners describe poor reach, limited view to the right, and near misses with pedestrians, and cite an IIHS rating of poor for the 2022 lights. Dealers say the lights are adjusted correctly. One report ties a total loss of lighting to a 12-volt power failure that also stopped the car. No crashes are reported.

  • Lane keeping31 crash

Lane keeping steered the car out of its lane with adaptive cruise on, crossing two lanes into a barrier with no warning. The crash injured two passengers and totaled the car. Another owner sees a persistent "Check Lane Assist" warning that disables smart cruise for more than 20 days at a time. A dealer-advised tire replacement and alignment did not fix it. A third report blames a failed audio amplifier for muting safety alerts. The dealer called it a known problem, and the only warning was popping and static from the speakers.

  • Airbags32 crashes

Airbags failed to deploy in a fatal head-on collision with a pedestrian. In the same report, forward collision avoidance gave no warning and did not brake. Another crash report describes the car speeding off on its own while stopped to make a left turn. A third complaint says the airbag floor wiring harness runs unshielded under the moving front seats. The owner warns it can be cut or corroded by moisture and road salt. Replacement reportedly costs about $9,300 and is not covered by warranty.

  • Automatic emergency braking21 crash

False forward collision warnings and emergency braking hit on empty roads at anywhere from 35 to 60 mph, raising rear-end risk. A blind spot warning sometimes lights up at the same time. The warning clears only after a full stop and a shift through Park. Dealers find no codes. In the one crash report, the car swerved out of its lane with semi-autonomous driving on and sideswiped a semi. Lane keeping, emergency braking, and blind spot warning all failed to act, and damage came to roughly $14k.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints EV6 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
EV6 12v Battery isn't being maintained by the system and has failed and needed replacement. ICCU has been inspected under the recall but not replaced. The 12v battery is out of 36k mile warranty and has to be replaced out of pocket, when early failure is likely due to keeping the battery in an undercharged state.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2024

Electrical
On March 30, 2023 at 14k miles Integrated Charge Control unit failure of 2022 Kia EV6. Error message "Stop vehicle and check power supply." It was towed to the closest dealership. Kia customer care advised that the ICCU needed to be replaced, but the delivery date has yet to be confirmed.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Transmission
The ICCU failed after having the safety recall done on it. The car went into warning mode and I luckily had just enough time to pull it into a parking lot to get towed. another few minutes I would have been stuck on a road with no where to pull off. The dealer did replace the ICCU and said that they were familiar with the part blowing randomly on people and that Kia is aware but not making good fixes by putting in the same defective replacement units

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Transmission
My wife was driving my vehicle and it alerted her that she needed to pull over while driving. She managed to get out of traffic but was stranded on the side of the road while waiting for a tow truck. I completed the recall SC327 and it was performed but still had an ICCU failure. Dealer has not repaired it and is waiting on a part but they say it is on back order and has not given me a timeline for repair.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2025

Brakes
When coming to a stop while ascending a hill, the vehicle will roll backward while the brake pedal is depressed. There was enough braking force to stop the car (and prevent further forward motion), but the vehicle will roll backward.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Brakes
The vehicle does not trigger brake lights when it is using Regen braking or the ipadel mode. This can cause a safety hazard for the person behind me to crash into me without the brake lights warnings

Where the 2022 fits in the EV6's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the first model year of the EV6's first generation (2022–2024). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Kia fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Kia updated the EV6 for 2025, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2022)

  • New angular-designed LED headlights
  • Redesigned front fascia
  • New alloy wheel designs
  • Revamped interior with a revised curved panoramic screen
  • New fingerprint authentication system
  • Updated technological features

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
