Which Mustang Mach-E is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| Electric | AWD, RWD | 310–312 mi range |
- With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 310–312 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Rear brake pad delamination
11,000–18,000 miles
Parking brake connector corrosion
36,000–41,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Ford Mustang Mach-E, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical30No crashes
The most common failure is a sudden loss of all power while driving. Cars flash "Stop Safely Now" or a string of warnings, then slow and shut down, leaving drivers stranded in traffic or on bridges. Some lose hazard lights and steering assist. Others need a 12-volt jump before the shifter unlocks. One report describes a fire that started at the front and destroyed the car. Other complaints cover frozen or black screens, a missing speedometer, driver-assist features shutting off, and a liftgate that opens by itself. Several owners are waiting on recall parts for campaign 25V404000.
Transmission20No crashes
Drive power drops out. Cars fall into reduced power, will not go above 35 mph, or shut off completely with "Stop Safely Now," "Service Powertrain," and high-voltage battery warnings. These failures happen while driving, while charging, and at startup, some as early as 2,800 miles. In several cases the high-voltage junction box was replaced, and some owners say the new box failed too. Dealers sometimes cannot find a cause. Repeat breakdowns after repair are reported. A recall for a powertrain control module software update also shows up in these complaints.
Brakes11No crashes
Two main brake failures show up. First, the electric parking brake locks on with a "Parking Brake Fault" message and the car cannot move. Dealers trace it to a corroded wiring connector at the left rear actuator, and owners past warranty pay for the repair. Second, rear pads and rotors separate or stick after rain, causing clunking and grinding at roughly 11,000 to 18,000 miles. Two reports describe a low brake fluid warning followed by a pedal that sank to the floor. Dealers blamed failed calipers, one at about 237 miles. Owners also say one-pedal regenerative braking can switch off without warning.
Acceleration and cruise control71 crash
The most serious pattern is unintended acceleration. Cars surge after a stop, and one crash is reported. The cruise control button is easy to bump while turning, which keeps the car moving when the driver expects one-pedal driving to slow it. A "Drive Mode Unavailable" message can switch drive modes suddenly and change how hard the car slows. Other reports cover a driver display that lags, skips, or goes blank and shows the wrong speed, plus sudden power loss with a high-voltage battery warning.
Steering5No crashes
Few of these reports describe a fault in the steering itself. The repeated problem is the car dropping out of the selected drive mode at random. That changes pedal feel and steering response, and the car can lurch forward while stopped in traffic. Cruise control also turns on by accident when drivers reach for the turn signal, causing sudden acceleration during slow turns in one-pedal mode. Two filings are general complaints about phantom braking across several brands, and one is about a jump in the odometer reading.
Body and structure4No crashes
The front undercarriage cover comes loose at highway speed, vibrates hard, and drags on the road. One case happened at about 3,500 miles. In another report, the driver's door plunger jammed in the extended position and the door would not close. Separately, cargo in the frunk slid into the emergency release during hard braking and the hood opened while the car was moving. The dealer said that system was working as intended.
Airbags32 crashes
Two crashes with heavy front-end damage report that no air bags deployed. One was a near head-on impact that totaled the car. In the other, automatic emergency braking engaged, then the car stopped slowing and hit the vehicle ahead. A separate complaint says the rear-seat reminder does not detect passengers who get in after the car is started unless they buckle their seatbelts.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
Safety features shut off while driving, and the screen shows "Forward Collision Avoidance Brake Assist Unavailable." Dealers diagnose a failed radar and front camera that need replacement, at about 15,000 miles. Those cars had not been repaired when the complaints were filed. A separate report says BlueCruise hands-free driving swerved hard left on a bridge twice, and the owner links it to shadows on the road.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Mustang Mach-E owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Vehicle locked down and doors would not open or respond. Vehicle was completely prevented from getting into and a tow was required to try to open through 12v battery jump. Took two tow trucks and vehicle has no door handles so there is no way in. Ford told me it was a failure of software update and then they told me their engineers were aware of these failures and were working on it. Vehicle had to be reset and towed.

I’ve had this situation happen at least 2 to 3 times but specifically I’ll talk about the most recent. I was reversing out of my parking spot approximately 20 feet or so to where I can turn around and circle around the parking lot and exit. When I switched over to drive the vehicle accelerated rapidly unprompted. I was able to stop it by using the break, but I can also see how this could be a significant safety issue.

After stopping the vehicle to run an errand, the vehicle locked up. The steering wheel would not turn. The vehicle would not shift into any gear. The vehicle was inoperable and I found myself stranded 25 miles from home. The vehicle was towed to our local Ford dealership where it has been for the past two weeks. This failure could just as occurred on the road causing a dangerous situation.

We were driving my Ford Mach E when the vehicle disengaged the accelerator pedal and accelerated forward in which we had no control of. Pressing the break would cause the vehicle to accelerate faster almost causing multiple accidents at a high rate of speed. Multiple sensor malfunction even after being “ fixed “

"Parking Brake Fault - Service Now" warning appeared. Parking brakes locked after stopping vehicle. Dealer diagnosed problem as corroded wiring connector to left rear wheel parking brake motor. Vehicle has 41,000 miles. Vehicle was stuck and could not be moved. If this had occurred in traffic situation a crash could have resulted. Charge to repair was $600 because dealer claimed brake parts are a "wear item".

Brakes grind when coming to a stop at low speed or may not disengage from a stop at low accelerator input. Note auto hold/parking brake feature disabled. Appears to be oxidation and rough surfaces on brake rotors. Car has approximately 2700 miles and has done this since new.

When driving, sometimes a “Drive Mode Unavailable” message comes up on the infotainment. Drive modes in the MachE contribute to deceleration, one pedal driving, and throttle mapping, and switching abruptly from one to another without input from the driver is a safety issue as it can instantaneously change the deceleration or acceleration rate of the vehicle. This is a known bug that’s been around for years and still no fix for it.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2023
It is far too easy to accidentally hit and activate cruise control button on the steering wheel when turning. If your thumb brushes up against the button the car can continue moving when you expect it to be slowing down either coasting or staying at the same speed when using 1-pedal driving. This could easily cause an accident when coming up to a turn and someone is crossing the street or similar situation.
