Run the VIN before you go

A history report shows accidents, title brands, odometer readings, and open recalls for this 2025 Kia Carnival. Ask the seller for the VIN; it is also on the dash at the base of the windshield.

Which Carnival is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Kia Carnival. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
3.5L 6-cylGasFWD21 mpg
1.6L 4-cylHybridFWD33 mpg
  • The 2025 Kia Carnival was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Carnival that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Kia Carnival, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical78No crashes

The 12-volt battery goes dead after the van sits overnight or for a day or two, often within the first few hundred miles. Reports describe a parasitic drain with no lights or doors left on, repeated jump starts, and the Kia app halting remote functions once the battery falls below 40%. Some owners lose access through both keys and the app. A weak battery can make the electrical system flicker and shut the van off. Dealers often keep vans for days or weeks without a fix. Other reports cite a failed body control module and a hybrid stuck in electric mode at 30-35 mph.

  • Transmission16No crashes

Hybrid vans suddenly stop accelerating at about 31 mph, even with the pedal floored. Many cases happen on cold mornings, some after remote start, and turning the van off and on usually clears it. Warning lights often stay dark, though some drivers see hybrid system or powertrain failure messages. Dealers frequently cannot reproduce the problem. Other complaints describe the shifter showing one gear while the van is in another, hesitation when pressing the gas, and push-button starts that take many tries. Drivers report being stuck at low speed while merging or pulling into traffic, a clear crash risk.

  • Acceleration and cruise control12No crashes

The van refuses to go faster than 30 or 31 mph while the engine keeps revving. Most reports come from cold weather, often on the first trip after sitting overnight, and warning lights rarely appear. Restarting usually restores normal power, though some cases clear only after about 5 minutes. Some drivers also lose power at highway speed. The main danger is merging onto highways far below the speed of traffic, which invites rear-end crashes. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. A separate report describes the van surging forward while stopped with a foot on the brake.

  • Engine6No crashes

Acceleration stops at 30 to 31 mph, sometimes with a false 30 mph speed limit warning on the dash and no check engine light. Dealers have not found a cause, and one reset the transmission computer. Other reports describe slow acceleration with a briefly blinking engine light and rough running, a van that will not shift into 3rd gear while engine temperature climbs, and limp mode with no warning or stored trouble codes. One complaint links limp mode to oil overfill after oil changes. Each of these can leave the van slow in traffic.

  • Body and structure3No crashes

Power sliding doors close with strong force, and the obstacle sensor reacts late or not at all. One report describes a child's hand pinched before the door reversed, and 1 injury is recorded. Another describes doors closing straight through objects held in their path, a pinch risk for fingers and limbs. A separate complaint says the passenger-side floor near the second- and third-row seat tracks gets too hot to touch and warms the cabin.

  • Seats2No crashes

Second-row seats on new vans stick when sliding, then lurch forward suddenly when the outside release is used. In one report the seatback and its hard plastic seat belt housing struck a person beside the seat in the forehead, leaving a swollen lump. Only 2 complaints are on file, and one gives no details, so no wider pattern is visible yet.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Carnival owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Having battery drain issues. Brand new vehicle with less than 2,000 miles. After locking the car at night, the remote start would not work in the morning because it stated battery under 40%. Vehicle started with key no issues. One week later, after one day of not driving the vehicle, battery would not unlock remotely or start. Battery was at 6.25 volt. Jumped battery and vehicle started no problem. No accessories were left on to cause this.

Electrical
There seems to be a very common problem of the 2025 Kia Carnival having a battery drain issue, leaving people stranded. I had a dead battery today with only one month and 300 miles of use. Thousands have had the same experience and have discussed this on various forums.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Transmission
While driving in the cold the hybrid vehicle will not go over 31 miles an hour. I was turning on to a road that is 45mph and unable to reach a safe speed with traffic. This has happened twice to me now. The dealer can not make it repeat the issue at this time and no warning lights come on.

Transmission
The Kia Carnival Hybrid wouldn't allow me to accelerate, topping out at 30/31 MPH despite me fully pressing down on the accelerator. It has happened twice now (a few days apart) and can only be resolved by turning the car off and then back on. Compared to similar complaints logged on the NHTSA website, the difference is that this happened when it was roughly 50-60 degrees outside--not during extremely low temperatures as the other examples have described.

Acceleration and cruise control
On a day which had a high temperature of 16F our Kia Carnival Hybrid SXP, after not being used most of the day, when driving would not exceed 31 miles per hour. The engine would not rev loudly or give any indication of an error but would not go over 31 mph even with the gas pedal fully depressed. After pulling over and turning the car off and on the problem did not repeat.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2025

Acceleration and cruise control
Car would not accelerate past 30 or 31 MPH no matter how hard gas pedal was engaged. The RPMs increase, acknowledging the gas, but the speed stays the same. Stopping the vehicle and putting in park doesn’t fix it. This is particularly dangerous when going from city street to highway or interstate driving. It eventually self-corrects after about 5 minutes. We’ve experienced multiple instances now, and all have been in cold weather (<10° F).

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Engine
I was turning onto a main thoroughfare fare, and the van was slow to accelerate, Engine light briefly blinked, then went off, and then when I was on the interstate I had to pull over the van was running rough. Once I went back on the road, the steering wheel was shuddering and finally the engine smoothed out. This has happened more two other times to me.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Engine
Vehicle will randomly not engage into 3rd gear or go faster than 31 mph. The engine temp will increase as the RPMs continue to stay elevated since the vehicle isn’t engaging 3rd gear.
