Which Carnival is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Kia Carnival. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Carnival that averages well under the EPA 22 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Kia Carnival, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Body and structure28No crashes

Power sliding doors keep closing when a hand, arm, or leg is in the doorway. Most of these reports involve young children, and 12 people were injured, mostly with bruised or crushed fingers, hands, and arms. Adults say it takes their full body weight to stop a closing door. Some owners report that a replaced door sensor or a dealer software update did not help, and one dealer told a parent to keep the kids away from the doors. A separate report describes a broken liftgate strut that let the gate drop without warning.

  • Electrical20No crashes

Power liftgates rise to the set height and then drop partway back down, hitting people in the head and arms. One dealer quoted over $2000 for the actuator. The horn works only some of the time, and dealers often cannot reproduce the fault. Other reports describe the climate control and gear indicator lights going dark at about 9,000 miles, a fuel door that will not open and has no manual release, and an instrument cluster that went blank at 80,000 miles. Sliding doors that do not reverse after a software update also appear here.

  • Wipers and visibility17No crashes

Windshields crack with nothing hitting them, while driving or while parked, and the cracks spread across the glass within hours or days. Small rock chips also grow fast into long cracks in the driver's view. Some owners say the windshield scratches easily from normal wiper use. Rear side passenger windows shatter on the road with a loud bang. Replacement glass is sometimes out of stock. One report also describes adaptive cruise control shutting off with a blocked radar message when the sensors are clean.

Windshields crack repeatedly, often from a tiny pebble or no impact at all, and the cracks spread across the driver's line of sight. Some owners are on their second or third windshield. Waits for factory replacement glass run from 49 days to over three months. One owner says forward collision avoidance worked only intermittently after a windshield replacement. Rear side windows also shatter while driving, one at about 3,000 miles. A separate report describes dead 12V and 115V outlets with parts on back order.

  • Engine7No crashes

In very cold weather, ice forms in the throttle body and limits the van to roughly 10 to 20 mph with the check engine light on. Some vans had to be towed, and one owner reports code P211800. Other reports describe the engine shutting off or losing power while driving, including one at about 13,125 miles. In the most serious cases, an engine failed at 62,203 miles and sat two months awaiting replacement, and another burned coolant in cylinder 6, leading to an arbitration buyback order.

  • Transmission6No crashes

Transmissions refuse to upshift, leaving the van stuck near 30 to 35 mph with the pedal floored, often while merging onto highways. Owners describe near rear-end collisions. Other reports describe sudden loss of power at 45 and 65 mph, jerking that the check engine light traced to the torque converter, and shudder under acceleration or braking. One owner sees repeated code P0191 for fuel rail pressure. Several say dealer repairs did not stop the problem from coming back.

  • Seats4No crashes

Outboard second-row seats in the 8-passenger layout spring forward hard when the fold lever is pulled, or snap back if they are not fully clicked into place. Riders get hit in the face and head. Three people were injured, with reports of a split lip, a possible broken nose, a momentary blackout, and fear of concussion. The release lever sits low on the seat front, so people lean right into the seat's path. One separate report describes a driver's seat frame breaking in half.

  • Door latches and locks4No crashes

Power sliding doors close on people or open and close on their own. One owner pinned by a closing door suffered a torn shoulder, and the dealer said the door was operating as designed. In another case, a door sensor reprogramming did not stop the false movement. One van's rear sliding door opened by itself while driving and would not latch at about 500 miles. A software update and latch lubrication did not fix it.

  • Airbags22 crashes

No airbags deployed in high-speed side impacts, according to two crash reports. Both involve a vehicle running a stop sign and striking the driver's side. The drivers describe head injuries, a concussion, and lost consciousness, and one van was totaled. Both owners believe side curtain airbags would have reduced their injuries. With only two reports, no wider pattern is visible, but the injuries described are serious.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Carnival owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Body and structure
The doors sensors do not work. I am 200+ lbs and have to push with force to get it to stop closing. My 2 year old last minute stuck her hand into the car while the door was closing to get a blanket and it CRUSHED her fingers. These doors are extremely unsafe. Then we took it to Kia and they said “just keep the kids away from the doors” which is INSANE when you’re talking about little kids.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2022

Body and structure
The automatic doors will close even if a child or something is in the way. Kia has acknowledged that the sensor may not work, but this is a huge safety issue when dealing with small children. I was loading the car and pressed the button to close the door. Then, I realized I forgot something and placed my hand in front of the sensor to stop the doors from closing, but the sensor failed.

Electrical
Will not accelerate over 10 Mph in cold temp even after warming up vehicle. Will lose acceleration at a intersection and dangerous while taking a left turn. Check engine light goes on. Throttle bottle issue. Believe it is moisture/water in the throttle body causing it to freeze in colder temps. NEEDS TO BE RECALLED. Many many other Kia Carnivals having same issue. Model is brand new and should not be having these issues. FAMILY CAR.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2022

Electrical
The safety feature on the sliding back doors is not safe for children. Previous vans I have owned had a sensor that would trigger the door to open back up if it were closing and ran into something, like a child getting caught in the sliding door. I am a grown adult and the door closing on the Kia Carnival is too strong for me to even stop with my entire body weight. A child is going to get crushed in those sliding doors.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2022

Wipers and visibility
During a road trip, I stopped at a gas station to fill up. I went inside to get a drink and a large 12 inch crack appeared in the windshield about midway down on the passenger side. It was not there previously and nothing appears to have hit it either. The crack now spans to the drivers side and sits at about eye level. It also has a gap in the crack which is very noticeable on the passenger side.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2023

Wipers and visibility
The rear side passenger window busted from the bottom. Only top half of window remained while driving down the road. No warnings. I only knew this was possible with car due to Facebook group and others having this happen to them. Big bomb sound no one else on road car is 2022 bought September 2021. Handling its 3rd winter in the state we got it.

Where the 2022 fits in the Carnival's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2022 is the first model year of the Carnival's fourth generation (2022–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Kia fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Kia updated the Carnival for 2025, so a 2022 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2022)

  • New front and rear fascias
  • Redesigned headlights and taillights
  • Interior updates with new switchgear and center console
  • Addition of hybrid powertrain

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
