Worth adding to your 2023 checks

  • Close each power sliding door on a rolled towel and confirm it stops and reverses right away.
  • Leave the key fob near a closed sliding door for several minutes and watch for it opening by itself.
  • Open the power liftgate several times and confirm it stays at its set height without dropping.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Kia Carnival, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Body and structure10No crashes

Power sliding doors keep closing on hands, arms, and bodies instead of reversing. An adult has to push hard before the door stops, and a child cannot. This category holds 4 injuries, including a finger laceration that needed emergency room care and a badly swollen thumb. Some doors also stick partway, which delays freeing a trapped finger. Other complaints describe a sliding door window shattering while driving with no chip in the glass, a fuel door that will not open, and a power tailgate closing on a person.

  • Electrical6No crashes

The van shuts off in traffic or loses power at highway speed, and the brakes and power steering go hard when it does. Several warning lights may come on, or none at all. Dealers often cannot find a fault without stored codes. Power sliding doors keep closing on people without retracting, and in freezing weather a door cable can snap. Other complaints describe a rear door that reopens on its own, taillights that work only some of the time, and reverse lights that come on unexpectedly.

  • Engine2No crashes

A strong fuel smell comes and goes, and it can continue even after the dealer finds a leak and replaces fuel injection parts. Another complaint describes the engine shutting off at a stoplight after a long idle. The dash showed an engine-off warning and asked the driver to shift to neutral and restart. A restart fixed it. With only two complaints, this area has no clear mileage pattern, but an engine that stalls at an intersection is a real collision risk.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

Middle-row seat belts fail to retract or fail to lock during hard braking, so they cannot hold a passenger in place. One child came fully out of the seat because the belt did not catch. Dealers confirm the fault and say the belts need replacing, but the parts are on backorder, so the vans stay unrepaired while families wait. One failure came at about 30,000 miles. Missing restraints in the row where children usually sit make this a serious injury risk.

  • Chest Clip2No crashes

These complaints are about child car seats, not the van. One describes a magnetic chest clip that broke apart during a short drive and left small pieces where a child could put them in her mouth. The other describes a harness that loosens after it is tightened, which the seat maker blamed on debris in the adjuster. Neither complaint points to a defect in the Carnival. Shoppers can treat this category as a car seat issue rather than a vehicle reliability concern.

  • Steering2No crashes

A leaking steering column seal drips oil or fluid onto the driver's floor near the brake pedal. Dealers say the whole column needs replacing and warn that the steering wheel could seize while driving. In one case the van was declared unsafe to drive. Lane Keep Assist and Steering Assist may also switch themselves off. Both complaints end the same way: the replacement column is on backorder and the vehicle is not repaired. One leak appeared at only 3,337 miles.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Carnival owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Body and structure
The side sliding (rear) doors do not stop when there is an object in between. Even when you put heavy force (this is in some angles), the door continues to close. With mild force, the door just refuses to recognize and closes out. It is a big safety concern with small children, since if the force applied by adults is not enough, then any force the child would apply is definitely not going to stop the door from closing.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2023

Body and structure
We are concerned about the safety of the sliding doors on your 2023 Kia Carnival. The sensor does not detect objects in its path while closing, and we have already experienced two incidents and we noticed that require a great deal of effort and force to stop the door before someone gets hurt. The sensors are not working properly they need to be repair as soon as possible in order to ensure the safety of your kids.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Electrical
Rear automatic door shut on adult even after bumping into the individual. The sensor did not stop the door from closing. This could have caused serious injury, especially if this were to happen to a kid.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Engine
We drove an hour then sat in the car while it was on for about 30 minutes. The gas tank was 14% full. We started driving again down a bit of a hill & got to a stop light. The car started beeping & said “engine off! Switch to N then start engine” We turned the car off and back on & it started working.

Where the 2023 fits in the Carnival's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2023 is the second model year of the Carnival's fourth generation (2022–2023).

Kia updated the Carnival for 2025, so a 2023 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2023)

  • New front and rear fascias
  • Redesigned headlights and taillights
  • Interior updates with new switchgear and center console
  • Addition of hybrid powertrain
