Which Palisade is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Hyundai Palisade. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 3.8L 6-cyl | AWD, FWD | 21–22 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Palisade that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Hyundai Palisade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Brakes1839 crashes
The ABS triggers when braking over uneven ground at low speed, and the car keeps rolling. Speed bumps, gravel, railroad tracks, potholes and manhole covers set it off, usually under 25 mph. The pedal pulses, the front end and steering wheel shake, and stopping distance grows sharply. Nine of the 183 complaints involve crashes, mostly rear-end impacts. Many owners notice it early in ownership. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. Some swapped ABS parts or machined warped rotors under a service bulletin. A few reports describe sudden false emergency braking.
Seat belts16No crashes
Most of these complaints concern recall 25V607000, where the repair parts are on backorder and owners have waited months. Dealers have told some owners to keep driving in the meantime. Reported failures include buckles that pop open while driving, buckles that will not latch without heavy force or in cold weather, and a retractor that leaves the belt slack. Both the driver seat and second row are affected. One second-row belt came loose from its lower anchor at under 2,000 miles.
Suspension11No crashes
Rear clunking, thumping or tapping shows up between roughly 10,000 and 30,000 miles. Dealers have replaced rear struts, shocks and a suspension bracket, but the noise often returns within days. Several complaints here actually describe the low-speed brake shudder on bumps, where the front end shakes and the car keeps moving. One dealer replaced a strut to cure that shudder, and the problem continued. A single report describes a popping sound in left turns traced to a faulty front differential.
Steering101 crash
Most of these reports describe the steering wheel shaking violently when braking over bumps or railroad tracks, along with weak braking. The brake fault shows up through the wheel here. One crash caused a neck injury. Other reports include steering that locks mid-turn at low speed with a loud bang, then releases. One owner had heavy steering together with a fully lit dash at 14,500 miles. Another car still pulls right after an alignment.
Acceleration and cruise control8No crashes
Most reports describe the ABS fault again. Braking on rough or bumpy pavement under about 20 mph brings pulsing and shaking, and the car rolls into intersections or toward traffic before it stops. Owners say no warning lights come on. One owner reports the SUV failing to respond to the accelerator. Another says the steering wheel button labels are unreadable in daylight on the Calligraphy Night trim.
Body and structure7No crashes
Sunroof glass explodes without warning, sometimes at highway speed, with a loud boom and nothing striking it. Paint flakes or chips on roof rails and door handles, including on Night Edition models, within a few months. One owner has a driver-side A-pillar trim rattle at speed that survived repeated part and windshield replacements. Two reports repeat the low-speed skid when braking on rough pavement or brick roads.
Electrical6No crashes
The most serious report is an engine bay fire at 1700 miles, blamed on the AC compressor, that filled the cabin with smoke and injured one person. Other complaints describe no-start problems: one in freezing weather with a Check ESC message, one traced to wires touching under the driver's seat, and a digital key that unlocks the car but will not start it. False parking-sensor errors recur, and one dash display was replaced within weeks of purchase.
Wipers and visibility6No crashes
Sunroofs shatter while driving, even when closed, with glass bowing outward and nothing striking them. The internal sliding shade is what keeps glass off the occupants. Windshields also crack with no clear impact. Dealers sometimes blame a strike, and coverage is uncertain. Separately, front and rear wipers stop working, and one warranty claim for a dead passenger-side wiper was denied.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Palisade owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Car doesn't brake as expected over uneven surfaces (pot holes, speed bumps, divots) at low speeds (under 10 miles per hour). Instead of the car braking the ABS system kicks in causing a rumble and the car to continue to travel forward at it's current speed. This in turn causes the driver to engage the brake completely to get the car to stop before rear ending a vehicle in front or proceeding past stop signs, red lights, and entering cross traffic.

I have a 2024 Palisade Limited AWD with 3000 miles. When breaking at slower speeds on rough or uneven surfaces the brakes severely vibrate and the vehicle will not stop properly causing possible severe injuries or crash. This happened on multiple occasions but most recently today.

In the past couple months the drivers side seatbelt retractor has failed twice requiring it to be fully replaced in both circumstances. In these situations the seatbelt becomes fully loose and can’t be safely used. They blame it on over extending the seatbelt which makes no sense as the retractor should not even fail in an accident.

The driver seatbelt has come unlatched while driving on 3 occasions over the past month, which is how long I have owned the vehicle. I will be driving normally and the seatbelt just pops open. No pressure is being applied to the belt or the buckle at the time it pops open.

I started hearing a rear thunking noise at approximately 10,000 miles. It was sporadic, not constant. With more miles, more distinct noise from rear of vehicle. At service appt and 24,000 miles a leaking rear shock was replaced. Two days later the same noise returned. The car goes back in to dealer tomorrow. Everything I’ve read points to this vehicle model having serious suspension issues - particularly with strut and shock assemblies.

After about 15,000 miles of normal driving (a few road trips but mostly commuting and taking the kids to school and sports, no towing or off roading), my vehicle developed a clunking noise. This noise was inspected by the dealer and determined to be an issue with the rear struts. This is the first time in almost 30 years of vehicle ownership that I have had a vehicle require a strut replacement.

All the dash light are on, warning signs flash, steering get heavy, Speedo not working, Signal indicator not working on dash. Not safe. Dealer drove the car and checked everything, could not get the car to do it again. I picked the car up and within 13 miles the dash was lit up like a Christmas tree, lots of error messages, steering very heavy07/21/24. 14,500 miles on car

I have a 2024 Palisade, and any small bump, pothole, or lane bump causes my steering wheel to shake uncontrollably. If I go over a speed bump or come down an incline, the brakes make a rumbling sound, and if I try to brake, the brakes stutter and just shake. I’ve almost hit a car in front of me a few times because it didn’t want to stop. This is a very expensive SUV to be having these issues, and it’s a major safety concern.
