Which GV70 is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Genesis GV70. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.5L 4-cyl | AWD | 24 mpg |
| 3.5L 6-cyl | AWD | 21 mpg |
- The 2023 Genesis GV70 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A GV70 that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Genesis GV70, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission151 crash
Acceleration disappears without warning, often while passing, merging, or pulling out from a stop. The engine revs but speed won't build, the transmission can hang in a gear, and some cars stall outright at highway speed. Many reports say no check engine light comes on, and dealers often find no cause. A second pattern involves the rear differential and AWD warning light, with loud noise above 50 mph and repeat replacements. One transmission failed at 1558 miles. Shudder at 40 to 45 mph, rodent-chewed engine wiring, and one crash with an injury also appear.
Electrical71 crash
Power cuts out or the car refuses to move, sometimes in traffic. On the Electrified model, the ICCU fails, the car won't go faster than 20 mph, and a red warning says to pull over and stop. Owners say a software reprogramming did not prevent a repeat failure. Other reports describe a complete power outage when parking, brake lights stuck on and draining the battery, the E brake engaging on its own at 75 mph, and audio failing around 8,000 miles. One crash followed an ABS module replacement.
Acceleration and cruise control5No crashes
Acceleration gives out, often soon after setting off, and the car won't go over 20 mph even with the pedal pressed. Restarting the car often clears it for a while. Other reports describe adaptive cruise tracking cars in the right lane, the emergency brake panic-stopping with nothing ahead, sudden acceleration while parking, and Lane Keep Assist turning itself back on. One car went into limp mode with no warning light after a cracked lower radiator lost all its coolant, nearly causing a rear-end collision.
Automatic emergency braking5No crashes
Emergency braking slams on with nothing ahead, on busy highways, at low speeds, and entering underground garages. The car can stop completely, and dealers say they cannot reproduce the problem or find any record of it. One owner reports a neck injury from repeated sudden stops. Related reports describe daily front radar blocked errors that disable collision avoidance and cruise control. Another describes the instrument cluster and infotainment screen going dark while driving, leaving the turn signals and hazard lights dead.
Engine5No crashes
The car stops responding to the gas pedal or shuts off while driving, sometimes in the middle of a highway. Reports describe the car only inching forward from a stop, refusing to go above about 10 mph, slipping into neutral and lurching, and shutting off repeatedly while the owner waited for help. One car lost power and shut off at 70 mph after the oil light came on, leaving a large puddle of oil and fluid. Problems start early, including at 1,540 miles and within the first month of ownership.
Wipers and visibility4No crashes
The windshield cracks with a loud pop while driving, with no chip, no impact point, and no traffic nearby. The cracks spread fast, in one case past 12 inches during a single trip. Other reports describe long cracks growing from a small rock chip, a side window cracking along with the windshield, and one owner replacing the windshield three times in a year. Several owners believe the glass is too thin and mention finding similar reports from other owners of this model.
Seat belts3No crashes
Most of these reports are about a parts shortage, not a belt failure. Two owners say they got a seat belt recall notice, but neither the dealer nor the manufacturer had parts to do the repair. Neither owner had a failure. The remaining report, which lists one injury, describes a foul smell of fumes, burning, and stale water within the first 200 miles. That owner says the dealer would not help.
Body and structure3No crashes
Body and underbody parts come loose or wear out early. The interior panels on the front doors peel and leave sharp edges, which one dealer documented but declined to repair. On a certified pre-owned car, the front engine undercover tore loose on the first highway drive and flapped violently, and the car could not be driven. Another owner was told a rock got through the large grille openings and punctured the turbo cooler, causing a leak at about 14,500 miles.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints GV70 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Genesis uses soy-based wiring in the engine without any rodent protection. We had rats chewing the wires in the engine last year in April, for $6.9k repair cost and again this year in February for $7.4k in repair cost. This car cost way too much to own, the repairs take about 5 to 6 weeks to complete, and most importantly this cat is a major safety concern to me and my family.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2025
Transmission failure at 1558 miles. Replacement of transmission assembly is required. Dealership (Manly Genesis of Santa Rosa, CA) has the vehicle. No confirmation date of when parts and work will be completed.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2023
ICCU failed leaving me stranded on the side of the road (thankfully not on bridge). This was supposed to have been fixed under a recall the week prior by reprogramming the computer. Genesis has not changed the ICCU so even if/when repaired, it will most likely happen again. The Genesis of Wexford, PA dealer confirmed ICCU and fuse blown. "Stop vehicle and check power supply" warning light came on.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
The adaptive cruise control started pacing off vehicles in the right lane instead straight ahead. Then the vehicle's forward collision emergency brake system started engaging with no vehicles infront causing the vehicle to panic stop on its own for no reason. This panic stop could cause an accident, personal injury or death.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2024
No warning lights when there was a crack in the lower radiator causing loss of all coolant. Went into limp mode with no warning lights on the dash. Caused a near rear ender when in limp mode unbeknownst to driver.
Filed with NHTSA, January 2024
The forward collision warning comes on and the car completely stops. We are traveling and it happened twice on busy hwy. We were not hit but came perilously close both times. We took our car in for service and asked that they disconnect this because we have had the problem before. They said they did. It has find for about 2 months and now is starting again even though it’s supposedly disconnected. There is no warning before this happens.

Where the 2023 fits in the GV70's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2023 is the second model year of the GV70's first generation (2022–2024).
Genesis updated the GV70 for 2024, so a 2023 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2023)
- Redesigned headlamps
- New front grill
- Updated wheels
- Changes in climate controls
- Updated center console
- Replaced 12.3-inch instrument cluster with a 27-inch OLED screen
