Which Bronco is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2022 Ford Bronco. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.3L 4-cyl | 4WD | 20 mpg |
| 2.7L 6-cyl | 4WD | 19 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cyl | 4WD | 15 mpg |
- The 2022 Ford Bronco was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Bronco that averages well under the EPA 15 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2022 Ford Bronco, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission791 crash
Transmissions fail outright on some higher-mileage vehicles. Owners describe 7th-to-8th shift faults, limp mode and internal breakage, with dealer replacement quotes of $10,000 to $13,000. Coolant leaks from the water pump are common between roughly 25,000 and 36,000 miles. Other reports cover rear differential and transaxle failures, hard or hanging shifts, and sudden powertrain malfunction warnings that cut power or shut the engine off. One crash involved the vehicle creeping and speeding up despite braking. One fire report describes an exploded battery. Back-ordered parts often slow repairs.
Electrical731 crash
Engine compartment fires are the most serious reports. Three are fire-related, including one at 900 miles and one in a parked vehicle with no warning. More often, batteries drain or fail repeatedly and the vehicle drops into power-saving mode or will not restart. Many owners describe a sudden flood of dash warnings, sometimes with the parking brake applying itself. Some vehicles lose the dash and lights at highway speed, even after a recall repair. Corroded harness connectors, a headlight dial that changes settings on its own and cameras that stay on also appear. One crash followed a no-restart with no brakes.
Wipers and visibility651 crash
Wipers change speed on their own. Set to low or high continuous in rain, they drop to intermittent or slow to a crawl until the driver cycles the control, briefly blinding the driver. One crash is tied to this. The windshield chips and cracks easily from small gravel, and some owners have replaced it several times. Rain-sensor and camera recalibration add to the cost. Other reports include rear hardtop glass shattering while parked (one injury), washer fluid that will not spray at 20 degrees F or below, a cracked washer reservoir, and LED headlights that pack with snow.
Brakes551 crash
Braking can fade or fail without warning. Owners report ABS faults with the pedal sinking to the floor, a hard pedal with a check brake system message at highway speed, and brake booster or vacuum hose failures that remove power assist. One crash and one fire-related injury case are on file. The most common complaint is a loud foghorn moan or squeal when reversing. Dealers often call it normal or wait for a back-ordered hardware kit. Owners also report a rattling manual park release cable, rear roaring noises and unusually fast pad and rotor wear at 14,600 miles.
Engine471 crash
Fire is the leading risk. Four reports are fire-related, involving smoke from under the hood while driving or parked, sometimes after an engine compartment hot warning. Fuel odor and a cracked fuel injector recall appear in several of them. Water pumps leak again and again, with one vehicle needing three pumps by 50,137 miles. Other owners report stalling, sputtering and loss of acceleration within the first few thousand miles, including fuel pressure control errors. One engine failed outright at about 3,000 miles, and one catalytic converter melted. Repairs often stall on back-ordered parts.
Fuel system44No crashes
Most filings here are about fuel system recall 25V467000, not an actual failure. Owners report the parts are unavailable, only an interim repair was done, or the VIN still shows the recall as open. Many of these filings come from Bronco Sport owners. Real failures include two fires: one started under the hood in slow traffic and caused smoke inhalation, and one started at the fuel filler of a parked vehicle at about 8,000 miles. Owners also describe strong fuel or exhaust odors in the cabin and a lag before the vehicle accelerates.
Suspension29No crashes
Rear shocks leak, and their external reservoirs corrode and can break off. One owner reports a reservoir separating at 70 mph and nearly hitting the car behind. Leaks show up from about 20,000 miles, and some vehicles need a second set. Recall 25V025 covers the reservoir corrosion, but owners report parts on back order, a campaign placed on hold and dealers declining to classify the rust as corrosion. With failed shocks, the rear end shudders or bounces. Front shocks leaking is also reported, and one owner paid over $900 after the warranty ended.
Steering193 crashes
Power assist can cut out, and the wheel can lock or stiffen while driving. Owners report assist fault warnings, broken steering gears and rack and pinion failures, often with parts on back order. Some VINs were left out of related recalls. Three crashes are on file, including a vehicle that pulled hard left into a guard rail after an assist failure. One heated steering wheel cover caught fire with a blue flame. Less serious but common is a clicking or wind-up noise when turning, reported from about 4,000 miles and in hot weather.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Bronco owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I’ve had my 2022 ford bronco sport for about 2 1/2 years I ordered it brand new and it made 8 miles on it when I drove it off the lot. Within the past month it’s completely blacked out my radio display while I was driving and wouldn’t come back on until it was turned off and turned back on. Now when I start it it’s acting like the battery is going out. I wouldn’t expect a battery to go out under 3 years. Please please can you help me with these issues.

At a little over 75,000 miles, I had a warning light come on that basically said there was a problem shifting between 7th & 8th gear and it put my car into safe mode. After getting it to a dealership, I'm told it needs a new transmission and was quoted $10,000. That's incredible excessive for a 3 year old car and reading through many online forums, I'm not the only one this has happened to with this car.

Battery installed is bad. Different operations were not working properly and I was afraid could stall out in traffic or leave me stranded. Dealership diagnosed it as bad, but now Ford is not acknowleding it is an issue and covering rentals to fix. I have seen many complaints about the Ford Bronco Sport tearing through batteries before their time. Mine was less than a year and a half old and less than 6,000 miles at the time the battery was acting up.

I had a light pop up that said “charging system service soon” so we took the vehicle in for service. Once the dealership got back to us, each of the ports on the wiring harness are corroded. The vehicle is barely over 36,000 miles and I’m already being advised to change out the entire wiring harness so there almost has to be some fault in the coverage of this equipment

Windshield easily chips and cracks. Vehicle has only 4500 miles and two chips without cracking and one chip with cracking. None happened at highway speeds and seemed to be small objects.
Filed with NHTSA, April 2023
Wipers in slow and fast speeds seam to go to intermediate on their own, the only way to get them back into full wipe mode is to go back and forth between slow and fast speeds!
Filed with NHTSA, January 2023
Vehicle reported Anti-Brake Fault. Vehicle reported Pre-Collision Fault. Vehicle reported 4 different hill start Assist Failures. I noticed the Pre-Collison feature did not work because the breaks never activated when there was a sudden merge into my lane going 65 miles per hour. The car says that the pre-collision feature is enabled but did not respond to a vehicle that came close to causing a wreck.

While on interstate 485 Charlotte NC, traveling with adaptive cruise control on at 73mph the brake light came in with a message to check brake system. I proceeded to apply the brake but was hard and unable to slow down. On my second attempt it worked then became normal. The bronco is at the dealer now for repair. And they found a faulty vacuum hose. Waiting for new hose to arrive at dealer

Where the 2022 fits in the Bronco's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2022 is the second model year of the Bronco's sixth generation (2021–2023).
Ford updated the Bronco for 2023, so a 2022 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2023 (not on a 2022)
