Which Bronco is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2023 Ford Bronco. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2023 Ford Bronco was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Bronco that averages well under the EPA 15 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2023 Ford Bronco, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wipers and visibility981 crash

Wipers set to low or high drop to intermittent or stop after about a minute of steady use, even in heavy rain. Ford describes this as a wiper motor protection feature, so drivers keep cycling the switch to see. Other reports cover wipers that quit entirely, including a failed motor at 90 miles, ice packing around the wipers, and windshields that crack without impact. One crash report blames an orange dash trim strip that reflects into the windshield at sunrise and sunset. A customer satisfaction program for the wiper issue reportedly expired in December 2024.

Glass breaks without any impact. Owners describe sunroofs shattering while driving, windshields cracking along stress lines, and a rear window bursting inward at over 70 mph, injuring an occupant. Water leaks through the rear windshield gasket in wet weather. Several wiper complaints also land here: wipers slow down or quit in rain within the first few hundred miles, which the manufacturer calls a smart wiper motor feature. One report describes a rear passenger window stuck in place.

  • Electrical372 crashes

The center screen and gauge cluster go black or freeze while driving, taking the speedometer and rear camera with them. Some vehicles then refuse to restart. At startup, the speakers can let out a gunshot-like bang, then crackle or lose sound completely. Other reports describe sudden loss of acceleration, a shift-by-wire system dropping into Park while moving, and battery warnings that continue after the recall repair. Two people were injured when a vehicle moved in reverse with the driver's door open. Dealers often find no fault codes.

  • Transmission24No crashes

Automatic transmissions shift harshly at low speeds, jerk, over-rev before engaging, or refuse to go into Park or Reverse. Several owners report replaced transmissions, one after metal shavings turned up within the first 500 miles, and some cars sit at the dealer for months waiting on repairs. Manual gearboxes make a scraping noise in first and second. Four-wheel-drive complaints include front-end clicking, wheel lockup, front pinion seal leaks, and a small fire after the system engaged on its own. Some owners also report stalling that a dealer traced to an incorrect factory battery.

  • Engine21No crashes

Power cuts out at speed without warning, sometimes in heavy traffic or on the interstate. Several owners needed full engine replacements at low mileage, one at about 2900 miles. Reported causes include misfires, coolant in a cylinder, fuel in the oil, low oil pressure that triggers limp mode, and a failed catalytic converter. Dealers call low-rpm knocking normal and leave it unrepaired. The fuel injector recall warns that cracked injectors can leak fuel onto hot engine parts. It draws many complaints about missing parts, and one under-hood fire injured two people.

  • Brakes173 crashes

The brake pedal goes rock hard and the car barely stops, or does not stop at all. Three complaints describe crashes. A recurring Check Brake System warning, sometimes tied to low brake fluid, survives repeated dealer visits. Bronco owners also report the vehicle creeping forward on steep hills while the pedal stays pressed. Grinding and moaning from the rear brakes continues after pad and rotor work. Several complaints concern a hydraulic brake recall delayed by part shortages.

  • Fuel system171 crash

Most complaints concern the fuel injector recall, with parts unavailable for months while owners keep driving. Reported symptoms include strong fuel odor through the vents, hesitation going uphill, loss of power with a check engine light, and lurching at startup. In one report, a vehicle still waiting on the recall repair caught fire and crashed at highway speed, trapping and injuring the driver. A separate complaint flags the capless fuel filler as a security concern.

  • Suspension13No crashes

Rear shocks leak, crack, and corrode at the external reservoir. The result is a bouncy, rough ride, and in one case a violent swerve at 65 mph after a shock blew. A recall covers the rear shocks, but most complaints describe parts on back order and dealers unable to finish the repair. Owners object to a sealant-and-clamp remedy in place of new shocks. Separate reports cite cracking front differential mounts that need welding and a stabilizer bar that failed on a nearly new vehicle.

  • Seat belts10No crashes

Most complaints concern a seat belt recall on the Bronco that stayed open for lack of parts, leaving some new vehicles stuck at dealers. Failure reports include rear belts that do not retract to hold a child seat, which led to a mild head injury. Others describe a middle belt that does not work, rear buckles found unlatched under child seats, and a driver's shoulder belt that locks during normal slowing.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Bronco owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Wipers and visibility
While driving in heavy rain/snow, the windshield wipers will slow down or stop altogether until the wiper speed is changed manually. This occurs at any speed setting - intermittent, slow, fast. Very hazardous having to constantly manually vary the wiper speed to keep them operating. Ford says that this is a feature intended to protect the wiper motor from excessive load. Ford is trying to reinvent the wheel and has created an unsafe condition.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2023

Wipers and visibility
Wipers will not stay in continuous setting (low) for more than 20 seconds before slowing down to extra slow for another 20 seconds, then stopping continuous and becoming intermittent. Have to keep changing the wiper speed control manually to keep them going continuously. It appears that the factory windshield is extra high friction even when clean and since new, which may be causing the issue of wiper motor slowing itself down to protect itself.

Electrical
The display for all the support systems does not boot up properly. This means I cannot access any of the advanced systems, the radio, or any of the other related systems. This is the display in the center console/dashboard. It is not know if other systems are impacted without this display because you cannot see any of the system messages that normally appear on the screen. The camera stays on because the computer does not override.

Transmission
I started to notice a scraping/grinding noise that is coming from the transmission. It can be heard when I do a cold start and leave in in neutral. If I push the clutch in it goes away. Also, I noticed it a bit louder when I am in low gears such as 1-3, even while fully warmed up.

Engine
My engine in 2023 Ford Bronco with approximately 2900 miles failed in lunch time traffic. The dealership is saying they have to order me a new engine. This is borderline criminal.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2023

Engine
My vehicle has the 2.7L V6 Ecoboost engine. This engine apparently has a design defect that results in repeated cam phaser failure. My engine recently had cam phaser failure and I had them replaced. A week later I was driving at speed on a highway when my engine completely died. I had to pull to the side of the road and could not restart my engine. I ended up being towed to a dealership and am awaiting diagnosis.
