Which Bronco is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Ford Bronco. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.3L 4-cyl | 4WD | 21 mpg |
| 2.7L 6-cyl | 4WD | 19 mpg |
- The 2021 Ford Bronco was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Bronco that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Ford Bronco, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Electrical1683 crashes
Sudden, total power loss while driving is the most common report. Engines shut off at highway speed, and the hazard lights, steering, and brakes go dead. Some cars cannot be shifted into neutral to push them clear. At startup, many cars flash every light, cycle error messages, and refuse to crank. Several of these episodes end in smoke or fire under the hood, and 7 complaints involve fire. Batteries, alternators, and starters get replaced, and some owners say the stalling comes back even after battery and software work under a recall.
Transmission135No crashes
Automatic transmission failure is the main pattern. Most of these failures come soon after the 60,000-mile powertrain warranty ends. Symptoms include slipping, shudder, harsh shifts from first to second, sudden drops into neutral with the engine racing, and cars that will not move forward or back. Dealers quote $8K to $13,000 for a replacement. Rear differential failures also appear, with grinding or binding in sharp turns, and some start under 30,000 miles. Water pumps crack and leak coolant, and several owners report replacing them more than once.
Engine1081 crash
Sudden shutdowns without warning, often at highway speed, lead these reports, and the car usually will not restart. A cluster describes catastrophic failure in the first few thousand miles, with knocking, oil loss, or a low oil pressure alert, followed by full engine replacement. Stalling from failed fuel pumps and low fuel pressure also comes up, sometimes with the car stuck at the dealer waiting for parts. Some owners report a rough, surging idle that worsens with miles. One fire started in the engine bay just after the car was parked.
Stalling and loss of power while driving lead these reports. Causes named by dealers include failed water pumps, drained or failed batteries, and a failed turbocharger that limited speed. Water pump failures cluster between 61,000 and 75,000 miles. Owners also report fuel odor through the vents, sputtering after refueling, and passenger-side vents that stop blowing hot air. One car was destroyed by an engine fire at 142,000 miles, which the dealer blamed on a faulty serpentine belt.
Brakes1055 crashes
The brake pedal suddenly turns rock hard and the car barely slows, sometimes at walking speed and sometimes in traffic. Several reports trace this to a cracked or detached vacuum hose or a failed brake booster, often with a hissing sound or a red brake warning light. These complaints include 5 crashes and 4 injuries. Some owners describe a delay before the car stops or brakes that fail during a pre-collision alert. Many say they were told a brake recall repair was on hold because parts were not yet available.
Fuel system491 crash
Most complaints here are not failures. Owners received a fuel system recall notice and say the repair part is still unavailable from the dealer. Where failures do appear, they include hesitation or near-stalling after refueling, a gasoline smell around the car, check engine lights, and failed fuel injectors. One car stalled in traffic from a failed fuel pump at 1449 miles. Two reports involve fires at the front of the vehicle, one in a crash that caused serious injuries.
Suspension39No crashes
Rear shocks leak or lose their external fluid reservoir, which can simply fall off. With the shocks gone, the car bounces and kicks over normal bumps at highway speed, and one shock came loose and struck the car behind. Reported failures fall mostly between 16,000 and 50,000 miles, and some recur after repair. Owners also describe screeching or scraping from the rear end in turns and when stopping, along with CV axle, control arm, and strut failures. Some say the dealer told them a recall remedy was not yet ready.
Steering17No crashes
When the car loses electrical power, the steering locks and the car will not stay in neutral. That leaves drivers stuck in traffic or unable to be pushed clear. Separately, owners report shudder, grabbing, lurching, or a loud moan during low-speed turns, often traced to the drivetrain rather than the steering itself. Rear-end instability over bumps above 50 mph is also reported. In one case a dealer found the steering gear detaching at about 77,000 miles.
Airbags117 crashes
Failure to deploy in serious collisions is the main complaint, including side impacts and high-speed crashes. These reports include 7 crashes and 10 injuries, among them fractures and neck and back injuries. The opposite problem also appears: a steering wheel bag fired after a pothole, and at least 6 bags deployed in a minor deer strike, totaling the car. Other owners say they received a recall notice for this system but were told repair parts were not yet available.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Bronco owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
I have been getting a message that my blind spot and cross traffic alert deactivated because trailer is attached. I have never had a trailer attached but do have a trailer hitch- the dealer said Ford refuses to pay to have it fixed because the bumper to bumper warranty is out. the car has been garaged and has only 9,000 miles on it. This is a safety issue that I think they should cover as I have no blind spot or cross traffic warnings.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2025
While at stop light, engine shut off (auto start-stop). Wouldn't restart, car would not move, automatically went into park, wouldn't go into neutral to be moved, and was stuck. Had to manually release the vehicle into neutral to be moved. Battery was completely dead, replacement solved the issue. Battery was less than 2 years old. Approx. 50k miles.

My wife's 2021 Ford Bronco Sport has had a complete transmission failure and the vehicle has less than 75,000 miles on it. We're told by Ford that the Powertrain warranty ends after 60,000 miles. This has been a disaster for us as we're paying a note on a vehicle that we cannot drive because it will cost $10-11K to repair. I've never owned a vehicle that has had so many problems in my life.
Filed with NHTSA, October 2025
The Vehicle was serviced as normal, everything came back in good shape. A few days later the transmission began to slip. The vehicle was taken back to the dealership where I was told that the Torque Converter was broken and the vehicle would require a full transmission replacement costing a total of $8K. The vehicle currently has 102,357 Miles on it.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
First time the engine lights came on and turned off the car could not restart, needed a new engine the first engine had 830 miles. Second time car stalled and the car would not start they replaced the engine again this time that engine had about 1,200 miles. Third time the car did the same thing with about 1,400 miles. All three times I was driving on Busy roads almost got hit all three times. Dealership did not give me any paperwork
Filed with NHTSA, January 2022
The water pump has been replaced twice already and the water pump needs to be replaced again at 105,000 miles. This will be the fourth water pump this vehicle has. The originally came with, two replacements, and now the one that it needs because it is leaking like the previous three. The turbo charger failed and was burning oil. That was replaced. A month later it is back at the dealership being replaced again
Filed with NHTSA, April 2025
When coming to a stop and pressing on the breaks it periodically will make s sound and then there is about a 2O SEC DELAY before coming to complete stop. If I am driving downhill the delay is longer. This scares my since I drive over 100 miles a day for work. I have reached out to FORD and the manufacture and they still do not have a fix to the issue.
Filed with NHTSA, August 2022
Upon starting the vehicle, brakes were extremely hard to press down and barely responded. A great deal of effort was needed to bring the car to a stop at below 5 miles an hour. If I had been driving instead of pulling out of a parking lot, this could have caused a significant accident.

Where the 2021 fits in the Bronco's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the first model year of the Bronco's sixth generation (2021–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Ford fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Ford updated the Bronco for 2023, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2023 (not on a 2021)
- New Raptor trim level with enhanced performance and features
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
