  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Mitsubishi Outlander, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Transmission41 crash

Sudden acceleration while shifting into park appears in one crash report, along with brakes that would not stop the car. Other reports describe the car rolling backward on slight hills while stopped, one wheel dragging, and delayed propulsion before 35k miles. PHEV owners describe a cold-weather fault below zero: the gas engine runs briefly, then a power reduced warning with a turtle symbol appears. Heat, defrost, and heated seats stop working and speed tops out near 40 mph. Several owners also report trouble reaching dealers or getting warranty help.

  • Electrical4No crashes

Steering wheel controls seem to act on their own. Volume jumps, calls drop, and voice commands start without a touch. Owners also describe slow or blank driver and media screens, and in one report every light and the climate system went dark while the engine kept running. Other complaints cover the car not accelerating when the pedal is pressed, cruise control changing the set speed, a battery that will not hold a charge, brake warning lights, and fuel fumes in the cabin. Dealers often cannot reproduce these faults, some of which start around 5,000 miles.

  • Steering21 crash

Total loss of control is the most serious report. In snow, the brakes and steering stopped responding and the dash went dark. The car went into a ditch and rolled onto its side, injuring 2 people. Afterward it restarted and ran normally. A separate report describes a strange noise from the suspension and a steering wheel that felt uncontrollable, with the front wheels turning opposite to the wheel. That problem appeared at very low mileage. Both complaints involve a sudden loss of control, though there are only two.

  • Seat belts2No crashes

Problems center on the driver's seat belt. One belt fails to retract, gets caught in the door, and dents the door frame, which leaves the owner worried it will not protect them in a crash. In another case the buckle would not latch and its casing cracked after the small screws holding it together failed. That owner also found loose bolts on the driver's door check arm, which caused a clicking noise until they were tightened. Dealers have not confirmed either belt problem.

  • Engine2No crashes

Serious internal engine failure appears in one report at about 52,000 miles. It began with rough idle that surged up and down and a check engine light, then progressed to coolant in the engine, failed compression tests, a head gasket diagnosis, and a full engine replacement. The owner mentions hearing of a similar failure at 50,000 miles. Separately, an "Engine malfunction, Power Reduced, Service Now" warning appeared within 30 days of purchase and kept returning after repeated dealer visits without a fix.

Recalls to confirm (1)

Recall repairs are free at any Mitsubishi dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 25V369000Backup cameraJun 2025

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain 2022-2024 Outlander and 2023-2025 Outlander PHEV vehicles. Due to a software error in the in-vehicle infotainment system (A-IVI), the rearview camera image may freeze, or not appear on the display. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".

Risk: A rearview image that does not display properly reduces the driver's view of what is behind the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will update the A-IVI software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 30, 2025. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-25-001. This recall replaces and expands previous NHTSA recall number 23V345. Vehicles previously repaired under recall 23V345 will need to have the new remedy completed.
