These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which Equinox is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
1.5L 4-cylAWD, FWD27–28 mpg
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD24–25 mpg
  • The 2020 Chevrolet Equinox was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Equinox that averages well under the EPA 24 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Chevrolet Equinox, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Brakes604 crashes

Brake assist fails, and the pedal either goes stiff and needs heavy force or sinks to the floor. Most reports trace this to the brake booster vacuum pump. The pump can shatter and send debris into the engine, sometimes ruining it. When a warning appears, it reads "Service Brake Assist." Failures range from nearly new cars to well past 60,000 miles, and some owners report the pump failing more than once. Owners say a recall exists, but their VINs were left out. The category records 4 crashes and 2 injuries.

  • Engine29No crashes

Loss of power and stalling lead these reports. They often come with a check engine light and a reduced-power mode that limits speed. Heavy oil use shows up on low-mileage cars, as much as a quart every 1,000 miles, and dealers cite bulletins for it. Turbo-related code P0299 keeps coming back and is hard to diagnose. Other failures include cracked spark plugs, a dead cylinder that required a new engine, high-pressure fuel pump failure, and vacuum pump debris destroying the engine. One car caught fire after losing power on the highway.

  • Transmission283 crashes

Hesitation is the most common complaint. The car delays or ignores the accelerator when pulling out or merging, sometimes showing an "Engine Power Reduced" message. Transmission fluid leaks appear as early as 500 miles, and a porous torque converter case led to one replacement transmission. Other reports describe losing forward gear, shaking under acceleration around 35 to 40 mph, and transmission replacement between 72,000 and 95,000 miles. Some stalls here trace to the fuel pump driver control module. Three crashes are recorded, including a parked car that rolled away.

  • Electrical25No crashes

Stalling and no-start conditions run through these reports. Causes include a battery with a shorted cell and fuel pump module faults. Water is a recurring theme, with sunroof drains leaking into the rear fuse box and spare tire well. Owners also describe the radio and infotainment screen shutting off while driving. Service ESC and traction control lights come and go, and a "shift to park" message can leave the car unable to turn off. A failed low beam means replacing the whole headlight assembly. No crashes are recorded.

  • Fuel system23No crashes

The car stalls without warning, often in intersections or on highways. Most cases trace to the fuel pump control module or the fuel pump itself, and some cars will not start at all. Reported failures span roughly 14,860 to 80,000 miles. Owners note the same part was recalled on 2021 and 2022 models but not on the 2020. Parts shortages are a major theme. Some cars sat at dealers for weeks or months waiting for back-ordered modules, and owners paid for repairs once the warranty ran out.

  • Steering112 crashes

Power steering assist cuts out while driving and leaves the wheel stiff and hard to control. Two of these events ended in crashes. A separate pattern is front-end shaking under acceleration, often near 39 mph or at the 2-3 shift. Dealers linked it to the front half shafts and a service bulletin, but the shaking can return after replacement. Other reports describe knocking during turns on new cars, "Steer Assist Reduced" messages, and lane keep assist that loses track of the lane lines.

  • Acceleration and cruise control91 crash

Unintended acceleration appears in several reports, including one crash where the car kept accelerating with the brake applied. Adaptive cruise control is the other main complaint. It shuts off or slows the car abruptly at highway speed, or it fails to stop for slowing traffic. Automatic emergency braking also works only some of the time. Some owners describe the engine revving with an "Engine Power Reduced" message, or the car refusing to accelerate. Dealers often find no error codes and cannot reproduce the problem.

  • Airbags65 crashes

Side airbags fail to deploy in driver-side impacts. This is the main pattern, and it includes a T-bone crash where the side curtain stayed stowed and the car was totaled. Five of the six reports involve crashes, with 7 injuries recorded, including a concussion. Other reports describe airbags that did not deploy in a multi-car pileup and a front passenger seatbelt that did not tighten on impact. One crash is blamed on the brakes failing to stop the car in wet conditions.

In owners' own words

Brakes
I have 149,000 miles in this car. In my lifetime of being the one owner and purchasing this car brand new the vacuum pump has failed five times. Twice now resulting in blown engines. And still no recalls.

Engine burning excess oil causing engine to go in safety mode and preventing car to go over 25 miles per hr. This happen on a major highway with two kids in the car and was almost rear ended. Took to dealership who has recieved bulletins regarding this issue and will repair the engine. To me this should be on a recall due to saftety.

Where the 2020 fits in the Equinox's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the third model year of the Equinox's third generation (2018–2024).

Chevrolet updated the Equinox for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

  • New front grille and redesigned headlamps
  • Restyled lower fascia and tail lamps
  • Wireless Android Auto/Apple CarPlay

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any Chevrolet dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 23V339000Child SeatMay 2023

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2023 Chevrolet Equinox and GMC Terrain vehicles. The four rear-seat lower child seat LATCH anchorage bars may have excessive powder coating, which could prevent a child seat from being installed with the anchorage bars. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 225, "Child Restraint Anchorage Systems.".

Risk: The inability to install a child seat with the LATCH anchorage bars could result in an unsecured child seat, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: Owners are advised to install child seats using the vehicle's rear seat belts until the remedy is complete. Dealers will inspect the latch anchorage bars, and remove and replace the finish, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 2, 2023. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N232403240.

  2. 20V668000TransmissionOct 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Chevrolet Cruze and Buick LaCrosse, 2018-2020 Chevrolet Equinox, Chevrolet Traverse and GMC Terrain, 2018 Chevrolet Malibu, 2019-2020 Buick Encore, Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT4, Chevrolet Blazer and GMC Acadia, and 2020 Cadillac XT6 vehicles. The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing bolts.

Risk: Missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and replace it if any bolts are missing, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick Customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. 3. 19V704000BrakesOct 2019

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Equinox vehicles. The rear brake calipers may have been produced with an incorrect lubricant, potentially causing the rubber seals to swell and the brakes to drag.

Risk: Brake drag may result in overheating of the brake pads, affecting the braking ability and increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the rear brake calipers, including the brake hose gasket, brake fluid and wheel to hub lubricant, free of charge. The recall began October 29, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438. GM's number for this recall is N192270920.

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Equinox all-wheel drive vehicles. The fuel tanks may have been manufactured with an improperly sealed seam, possibly allowing fuel to leak along the seam near the fuel inlet.

Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of the ignition source can increase the risk of a fire.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank, free of charge. The recall began October 24, 2019. Owners may contact GM customer service at 1-586-596-1733. GM's number for this recall is N192271870.
