Which XT6 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Cadillac XT6. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A XT6 that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Cadillac XT6, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical8No crashes

Cameras go dark in reverse. The screen turns black and shows a red triangle with a crossed-out camera icon. Dealers point to a service bulletin and new coaxial cables, but parts are sometimes not yet available. Other reports describe a fuel gauge that loses its level marks at startup, false SD card errors from the surround camera recorder, and a body control module replaced several times after the turn signals failed. Many of these faults start on nearly new cars, some under 400 miles. A passenger-side water leak has also damaged wiring and caused a burning smell.

  • Transmission7No crashes

The transmission shudders, jerks, or stutters during shifts at low rpm, near 1,500, and can feel close to stalling until revs climb. Because the fault comes and goes, repeat dealer visits often fail to fix it. Another pattern pairs a "Steering Assist is Reduced" warning with a check engine light and a blank coolant temperature display. It appears around 60,740 miles and continues past the 70,000-mile powertrain warranty. Loss of power while driving, traced to a faulty camshaft solenoid and an oil leak, also comes up. Auto stop-start can trigger repeated stability control warnings at idle.

  • Backup camera6No crashes

The rear camera fails at random in reverse. It shows a black screen with a red triangle and a crossed-out camera icon. Some failures seem to come on cool mornings. Replacing the camera does not always fix it, and several cars have gone back to the dealer more than once. A separate report describes automatic braking that slams on hard without warning while backing down a slope. Another filing involves no failure at all, just a long wait for repair parts that were unavailable.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints XT6 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I got this vehicle and have had the body control module replaced 3 times the first time was as soon as it got out the dealer lot the turn signals were not working so I took it back a week later and they had to replace the body control module and since then they have replaced it 3 times

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
I was waiting for a light to change to green and the vehicle shut down because of the auto-stop feature, after a couple of seconds the car turned on again and this message came on "stability track off" and this happened like that like 3 times until I turned off the auto-stop. I took it to the dealer the next day and they scanned it for issue and told me there's nothing wrong with the vehicle.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2024

Transmission
Intermittent shifting problems. Is stuttering when shifting. There seems to be an ongoing problem according to online and G M itself why isn't this recalled. There is no starting point it is intermittent on going. At the 1st instance they recorded it but it didn't get fixed and now they want to see it happening again but it's intermittent how many times do I have to go back

Filed with NHTSA, January 2023

Backup camera
Rear backup camera has failed 12 times since car purchase eight weeks ago. Black screen on info center with red circle with slash across the middle over a camera. The failure is intermittent and seems to fail when it is cool outside in the morning.

Where the 2020 fits in the XT6's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the XT6's first generation (2020–2025). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Cadillac fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Recalls to confirm (4)

Recall repairs are free at any Cadillac dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.

  1. 22V709000Backup cameraSep 2022

General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020-2021 Cadillac XT5, XT6, and GMC Acadia vehicles equipped with the optional Surround Vision feature. The rearview camera coaxial cable connectors may have been crimped improperly, causing the rearview camera to fail or function intermittently.

Risk: An inoperative rearview camera can reduce the driver's rear visibility, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: Dealers will replace the coaxial cables, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 18, 2023. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N222378380.

The start/stop accumulator endcap may have missing bolts.

Risk: Missing bolts on the start-stop accumulator endcap could result in a transmission oil leak and may progress to a loss of propulsion, increasing the risk of a crash. A transmission fluid leak in the presence of an ignition source may increase the risk of fire.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the start-stop transmission accumulator and replace it if any bolts are missing, free of charge. The recall began December 15, 2020. Owners may contact GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267, Buick Customer service at 1-866-608-8080, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. 3. 20V639000Fuel systemOct 2020

General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Buick Enclave, Cadillac XT5, Cadillac XT6, Chevrolet Traverse, and GMC Acadia vehicles. The fuel pump's jet nozzle may have a plastic burr remaining from the manufacturing process, possibly causing a blocked nozzle and an insufficient fuel supply to the engine.

Risk: Insufficient fuel supply can result in an engine stall without warning, increasing the risk of a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump module. The recall began November 16, 2020. The diffuser component of the Roof-Rail Air Bag (RRAB) inflator may not have been properly crimped to the inflator and could separate from the inflator during air bag deployment.

Risk: If the diffuser separates from the inflator during deployment, RRAB performance may be degraded, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.

Fix: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect RRAB modules, free of charge. The recall began September 3, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's number for this recall is N202305380.
