Which Aviator is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Lincoln Aviator. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

  • The 2020 Lincoln Aviator was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the plug-in hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Aviator that averages well under the EPA 20 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Lincoln Aviator, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical29No crashes

Electronic door release buttons stop working and trap passengers, who must roll down a window and use the outside handle. Rear doors fail most often, and one failure came at 2,200 miles. Other reports describe doors locking on their own, a dead keypad, and a center screen that goes black and takes the cameras and navigation with it. Some owners get false overheating warnings that cut throttle. The most serious reports involve sudden power loss while driving, a shift to neutral at highway speed, hazard lights that will not work, and the vehicle rolling after the driver gets out.

  • Transmission15No crashes

Transmissions slip out of gear, drop into neutral, or stop accelerating at highway speed, which leaves drivers close to being rear-ended. Other reports describe harsh downshifts, a burning smell, getting stuck in first gear, and valve body or full transmission replacements. One internal failure was diagnosed at 4960 miles. A second pattern is a sudden burst of warnings for AdvanceTrac, hill start assist, pre-collision assist, and 4WD, along with lost drive modes and loose steering. Owners also report the vehicle rolling after being parked, which one dealer traced to a parking pawl solenoid.

  • Body and structure7No crashes

Panoramic sunroofs shatter at highway speed with no road debris involved, and glass sprays into the cabin. Door problems keep coming up. A rear door flies open while driving, and inside release buttons fail with no mechanical backup on any door except the driver's. Exterior pieces come loose, including C-pillar trim and the glass from a side mirror. Water leaks in from under the overhead light near the rearview mirror and comes back after repeated dealer repairs. Backup camera blue screens are reported in this category too.

  • Backup camera7No crashes

Backup camera screens turn blue, green, or blank, or the image flips, when the car is shifted into reverse. Most complaints are about recall repairs. Some owners say the repair did not fix the fault. Others could not get it done because parts were unavailable, so they are left without a working camera while they wait. Several owners say the problem returns after image processing module software updates and multiple dealer visits. Rear brake assist that works only some of the time is also reported.

  • Steering4No crashes

Power steering assist cuts out, sometimes along with the engine and brakes, and drivers have to wrestle the vehicle to a stop. In one low-speed failure the vehicle veered off a driveway into rocks and bushes while showing a Steering Assist Fault message. Other reports describe warnings for drive control, AWD, adaptive cruise control, and collision assist that keep coming on at freeway speeds. Dealers have not fixed them after several visits, even after replacing sensors.

  • Engine31 crash

Vehicles move after the driver puts them in Park and walks away. One rolled through a garage door, the only crash-related report in this category. Other complaints describe a brief loss of power on turns or slight inclines. The pedal stops responding for a few seconds, then the car lurches forward with a clunk. Hard starting after refueling is also reported, with several presses of the start button needed before the engine turns over.

  • Brakes3No crashes

Brakes fail to hold or stop the vehicle. Drivers report the car creeping forward in Drive with the brake pressed until they pump the pedal. One describes a complete brake loss at 50 mph that forced a run through an intersection and a stop using the parking brake. In another report, at about 89,635 miles, the car would not move while the engine revved, and warnings appeared for the park brake, the braking system, and AdvanceTrac.

  • Suspension3No crashes

The air suspension leaks and loses pressure. The front end drops below the rear with a loud hiss and a service warning, and the car is unsafe to drive until it is repaired. Other reports describe a tapping from the front passenger side that grows louder over time. It is later joined by squeaks over bumps, while turning, and when people get in or out. One complaint lists repeated suspension service alongside camera and electrical problems.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints Aviator owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
AWD sensors repeatedly are going off then disappearing after car is turned on and off. Happens in City mostly but has triggered while driving on the highway. Caused all ability to use cruise control to deactivate. It also shows the down hill assist fault error.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2023

Transmission
My warning light stating a AWD malfunction has occurred has gone off 4 times, along with warnings for malfunctions in precollision assist and hill climb assist and the light has come on 4 times for each of these. When driving these lights come on and when the AWD malfunction light comes on the car drives very loose and I do not seem to have firm control over the steering and i feel like the car wants to swerve and I do not feel safe driving .

Filed with NHTSA, May 2023

Transmission
Driving down the road and all of a sudden multiple warnings come on the dash. They include : Service AvanceTrac, pre collision assist not available, 4WD fault service required, and Hill start assist not available. These warning all clear upon restart but will come back at random times. I joined a forum for this vehicle and a lot of owners are reporting this issue.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2024

Body and structure
No one was in the back seat when this happened. The back passenger door flung open while driving down the road. Immediately pulled off the road and it would not latch! Drove immediately to the dealership and got a loaner. Dealership stated it was the latch and repaired in a day or two.

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Body and structure
Glass portion of passenger side rear view mirror fell off as vehicle was exiting driveway possibly due to defective adhesive much like the safety recall on the door pillar trim. Incident was captured on home surveillance camera.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Backup camera
Lincoln had a recall on the rear view camera in 2021 which I completed that did not remedy the issue of blue screen in place of the camera. They released another recall and have continuously delayed it as they have no remedy so my vehicle is left without a functioning rear view camera.

Filed with NHTSA, October 2023

Backup camera
The rear view camera does not always work. Sometimes it is just a blank green screen with the guide lines. This happen many times but not always. The software to update the image processing module software has been done.

Where the 2020 fits in the Aviator's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the first model year of the Aviator's second generation (2020–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Lincoln fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Lincoln updated the Aviator for 2025, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2025 (not on a 2020)

  • Redesigned front fascia
  • Refreshed interior
  • Redesigned headlights
  • Discontinued plug-in hybrid Grand Touring trim

Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2020 Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with a 2.0L or 3.3L engine and a 10 Speed Automatic Transmission with the All Wheel Drive package. The drive shaft may fracture along the weld seam.

Either condition can increase the risk of a crash. The drive shafts can also deform and separate from the driveline and potentially contact the fuel tank, increasing the risk of fuel leaks and/or fire.

  28. 19V633000SeatsAug 2019

Ford Motor Company (Ford) is recalling certain 2018-2020 F-150 and 2019-2020 F-250, F-350, F-450, and F-550 Super Duty pickup trucks, and 2018-2019 Ford Explorer, 2019-2020 Expedition, and 2020 Escape vehicles equipped with driver and/or passenger's manual front seat back recliner mechanisms. Also included are certain 2020 Ford Explorer and Lincoln Aviator vehicles equipped with rear outboard seats and manual seat back recliner mechanisms. Risk: A seat back with an improperly assembled recliner mechanism may have reduced strength and may not adequately restrain an occupant in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.

Fix: Ford will notify owners, and Ford and Lincoln dealers will inspect the seat structure and replace them, as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 21, 2019. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332. Ford's number for this recall is 19C07.
