Which Escalade is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Cadillac Escalade. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 6.2L 8-cylGas | 4WD, RWD | 16–17 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cylDiesel | 4WD, RWD | 22–23 mpg |
- The 2021 Cadillac Escalade was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Escalade that averages well under the EPA 16 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Early engine failure
2,000–3,000 miles
Sudden power loss or stall
25,000–45,000 miles
Engine seizure requiring replacement
45,000–84,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Cadillac Escalade, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Engine63No crashes
Sudden, total failure is the main problem, often with no warning, and many cases end in a full replacement. Reports describe rattling or knocking, loss of propulsion at highway speed, and dealer findings of failed connecting rods, crankshafts, or rod and main bearings. Failures appear as early as 2,000 to 3,000 miles and again between about 58,000 and 84,000 miles. Some replacement engines fail too. Heavy oil use with low-oil warnings between changes is another theme. One report involves smoke from under the hood. Many owners say a recall visit did not fix the problem, and waits for new engines run for months.
Stalls and engine failure at speed lead to tows and engine replacements. Owners report failures at 40 to 70 MPH and as late as 96,000 miles. Most filings, though, are about a recall: owners describe getting notices, dealers saying repair parts are not available, and vehicles sitting at dealers for months. Several owners with failed engines say their VIN was not included. Low-oil warnings, ticking sounds, white smoke, and a replacement engine that failed again also appear.
Transmission191 crash
Power drops at speed, the engine stalls, or it seizes. Most reports describe engine damage rather than transmission faults. Failed lifters and camshaft parts come up repeatedly, along with knocking or ticking, a flashing check engine light, black smoke, and a fuel smell. Stalls and power loss are reported between 25,000 and 69,000 miles. Some owners see "Service Transmission Now" or recurring "Rear Axle System Off" messages with shaking. One crash with 2 injuries involved a vehicle that shifted gears on its own. Waits for replacement engines are long.
Electrical18No crashes
Many of these filings actually describe engine failure: power loss, knocking, vibration, and seizure. Electrical faults include dashboards that flicker or go blank, radio and navigation screens shutting off, and a failed fuel pump control module that caused stalls. Others report TPMS module errors on long drives, a rear door that will not open, and a backup camera that points down at the bumper. False automatic braking and rear axle warnings also appear. One report describes a fire at a stop light, with 1 injury and the vehicle totaled.
Seat belts61 crash
Few of these filings describe a belt failing. Most are about seat belt recall work. Owners describe waiting months for parts, dealers finding no repair needed after inspection, and one dealer refusing recall work on a vehicle with a branded title. Two reports describe engine failure with the seat belt warning light on. In one, the driver hit his head on the steering wheel when the vehicle stalled. Another car then struck the disabled vehicle, and he was injured.
Exterior lights3No crashes
Daytime running lights go out, and one report calls the tail lights intensely bright. One owner is waiting on an exterior lighting recall repair with parts unavailable, though the VIN tool showed no open recall. Another filing here is mostly about engine failure at highway speed, with metal found in the engine and more than one replacement engine. With only 3 complaints, no clear lighting pattern exists.
Automatic emergency braking3No crashes
The SUV brakes hard with nothing ahead. Reports include a full panic stop at 65 mph on cruise control and brakes locking up at the approach to a steel bridge deck. Drivers saw no warning lights beforehand, and one dealer found no fault. In another report, Super Cruise would not hand control back after the driver switched it off. The vehicle slowed and turned on its flashers instead. Each of these events risks a rear-end collision.
Steering21 crash
A wheel that locks up while the vehicle shifts caused a crash in one report. The other report describes recurring warnings for the driver airbag, the restraint system, the power steering column, and driver assist, plus a message about reducing features to save battery. A dealer traced the airbag light to an earlier airbag repair that was done incorrectly. The other warnings kept appearing after several dealer visits, and the dealer's diagnostic tools did not explain them.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Escalade owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Complete engine failure with vehicle only having 79615 miles on the vehicle. Vehicle was inspected by authorized Cadillac dealership and it was determined that the crank shaft/connecting rod had failed causing the engine to be replaced. Dealership communicated that issue was consistent with issue with known GM recall however vehicle was not covered under current recalled vin numbers at the time of engine failure.

I get oil changed regularly. For the last several thousands of miles, I keep getting low engine oil warning approximately 2,000 miles before an oil change is due. When I go to add more oil, there barely any oil showing on the dip stick and when I open the cap to add more oil, there's smoke coming out.

Recently called roadside assistance because the vehicle shut off in the middle of traffic. Took it back to dealer, Nothing they can do, just keep bringing it back! Now warranty has expired & sound is getting worse

Car died in the middle of road. You pump the gas, nothing. This happened twice. Once at about 30000 miles and then at 60000 miles. The dealer had to replace a module or electrical box for fuel pump.
Filed with NHTSA, September 2025
I have been waiting on the dealers to fix this recall for now 2 months and no solution has been found. I need to list my vehicle on turo website and need this recall to be cleared.

Where the 2021 fits in the Escalade's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the first model year of the Escalade's fifth generation (2021–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Cadillac fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Cadillac updated the Escalade for 2025, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2025 (not on a 2021)
- New front fascia, new interior design
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
