Which TLX is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Acura TLX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 24–25 mpg |
| 3.0L 6-cyl | AWD | 21 mpg |
- The 2021 Acura TLX was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A TLX that averages well under the EPA 21 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.
Transfer case spline failure
36,823–71,000 miles
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Acura TLX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Transmission38No crashes
The transfer case fails when its internal splines strip, and the transmission splines often go with it. Drivers hear a loud bang or boom, sometimes see fluid leaking afterward, and the car is left driving on the front wheels only. No warning light or check engine light comes on. Front tires spin easily, and one owner nearly rolled back on a hill. Reported failures cluster between about 36,823 and 71,000 miles. Repairs replace both the transfer case and the transmission, sometimes under warranty and sometimes out of pocket. A separate report describes a rear differential leak at 16,531 miles.
Airbags61 crash
Most of these filings are about an open air bag recall that dealers could not fix because the repair part was unavailable. Owners describe months of calls to dealers and Acura with no part and no estimated date. Most say they have had no failure themselves. One crash report with an injury describes a side impact from another vehicle in which no air bags deployed while the recall repair was still waiting on parts. One filing here is really about loud front brake squeaking the dealer could not duplicate.
Electrical6No crashes
The infotainment screen freezes, goes static, shuts off, or restarts by itself, often after hitting a bump. A frozen screen while reversing can hide people behind the car, and the audio can crackle. Other reports describe a no-start the dealer could not duplicate, and a car that will not shift into drive because it wrongly thinks a door is open, which stranded one driver in traffic. One filing describes transmission and transfer case spline failure causing harsh jerking and the engine shutting off at highway speed. One complaint lists an injury.
Automatic emergency braking51 crash
The collision mitigation braking system brakes hard with no vehicle ahead, at speeds from 35 to 75 mph, leaving drivers fighting for control. In rain or snow, a "Radar Obstructed" warning appears, the driver assist icon turns orange, and the car slows sharply without the brake pedal being pressed. Lane assist and other driver aids stop working while the warning is on. Dealers often find no fault codes. One complaint involves a crash.
Brakes5No crashes
Pressing the brake pedal at low speeds, around 1 to 3 mph, makes a loud spring or clicking sound that grows louder as miles add up. Others report a high-pitched squeal from the pedal, and in one case the dealer said repair parts were not yet available. Front rotors develop hot spots or damage that shakes the steering wheel when braking from highway speed, with one rotor replacement reported near 32,000 miles.
Suspension5No crashes
The front suspension squeaks and creaks over bumps, most noticeably in cold weather or after rain, with one report at 91,000 miles. An Adaptive Damper System error can appear on the dash, and in one case new rear shocks did not cure it because corroded stroke sensor wiring was the real cause. Two filings here actually describe transfer case failure, which leaves the car in front-wheel drive and changes how it handles.
Steering3No crashes
Power steering assist can drop out suddenly at freeway speed, with an "Electric Power Steering Problem" message, and one dealer replaced the rack and pinion over a steering position sensor fault. Other reports describe the steering column leaking fluid down to the brake pedal and a clicking noise when turning. One owner describes water getting in and upsetting the body control module, which triggered a cascade of dash warnings, wipers running on their own, starting trouble, and limp mode.
Engine2No crashes
Hard acceleration in the rain can bring on a flashing check engine light and a loss of power that leaves the car unable to reach 40 mph on the freeway. A dealer linked this to water getting into the turbo intercooler, causing misfires and a safe mode, and it happened on a car with only 2000 miles. The other report is a transfer case spline failure at 44K miles that also required a new transmission.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints TLX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Noticed my 2021 Acura TLX A-SPEC SH-AWD has fluid leaking from the rear differential where the driveshaft connects. The vehicle has 16,531 miles on the odometer. Honda is releasing a recall for leaking rear differential on the Honda CRV as well Accords. Honda may want to include the Acura TLX's as well in the recall as they are reporting the drivesshaft may cause serious damage at high speeds if the differential is leaking.
Filed with NHTSA, December 2022
My vehicle was performing as expected, but there was a smell of burning oil or rubber. When I took the car into the dealership the found that the transmission was slipping and the transfer box was failing. In the video they sent of the initial inspection there is obvious brown sludge leaking from the transmission. I was told that a complete transmission and transfer case was required.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2026
The infotainment system glitches or goes static after a bump of any sort. Sometimes it would restart entirely. Or just not work until I stop and restart the car.
Filed with NHTSA, February 2023
Problem with all safety feature sensors like Adas, lane assistance. Small car icon which always green turned orange, and none of those features working.

Where the 2021 fits in the TLX's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the first model year of the TLX's second generation (2021 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Acura fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Acura updated the TLX for 2024, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2024 (not on a 2021)
- Updated exterior styling
- New infotainment and safety features
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
Recalls to confirm (3)
Recall repairs are free at any Acura dealer, but the seller may never have had them done. Check each campaign number against the VIN.
25V391000BrakesJun 2025
Honda (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2021-2025 Acura TLX, 2023-2025 Acura MDX, and 2023-2025 Honda Pilot vehicles. The brake pedal pivot pin was not secured properly, which can cause the pedal to shift out of position. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard numbers 108, "Lamps, Reflective Devices, and Associated Equipment" and 135, "Light Vehicle Brake Systems.".
Risk: A brake pedal that shifts out of position can prevent the driver from applying the brakes as intended, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: Dealers will inspect and replace the brake pedal assembly as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed July 29, 2025. Owners may contact Honda's customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are FLX and XLY.
24V950000Fuel systemDec 2024
Acura (American Honda Motor Co.) is recalling certain 2021-2023 TLX vehicles. The fuel filler neck and fuel tank may have been improperly welded, which can result in a fuel leak.
Risk: A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.
Fix: Dealers will replace the fuel tank assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 3, 2025. Owners may contact Honda customer service at 1-888-234-2138. Acura's number for this recall is JKX.
