Which RDX is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Acura RDX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | AWD, FWD | 23–24 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A RDX that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Acura RDX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Wipers and visibility14No crashes
The rear tailgate glass shatters without warning, often right after the driver door closes and sometimes with the engine off. Glass fills the cargo area, and the car sits until the window is replaced. Dealers tell some owners this happens a lot. Wipers also stop working for hours or days at a time. One washer system failed because of clogged nozzles that were on back order. One owner reports adaptive cruise braking hard by itself during a lane change at 65 mph.
The rear windshield shatters or cracks with no impact. It usually happens while the car is parked, and one broke as the trunk was being opened. Most failures fall between 60,000 and 75,000 miles, but one came at 5,539. Dealers say it is not covered under warranty, and one owner was told the model year falls outside a rear-glass service bulletin. In another case, the panoramic roof glass shattered while driving at about 56,000 miles, a day after a gunshot-like bang.
Brakes101 crash
Rear brakes squeal loudly, worst in reverse and at low speed. Some cars squeal within weeks of new, and dealers have no fix. Others report front brake judder at moderate and higher speeds that gets worse over time. One electronic parking brake seized at 63,270 miles and needed a new motor and switch. One crash: Brake Hold released without warning in stopped traffic, and the car lurched into the vehicle ahead. Scattered reports also describe the car creeping forward with the brake pressed and brakes that feel like they slip.
Airbags10No crashes
Most of these reports are about a recall repair, not a failure. Owners received recall notices but could not get the work done because parts were unavailable. Some have waited more than a year, and dealers confirm the shortage. None of these owners report an air bag failure. Separately, the front passenger seat sensor does not detect a very light adult. The dash shows the passenger air bag as OFF, and the dealer says nothing can be done.
Body and structure9No crashes
The panoramic sunroof pops or knocks when the body twists over driveways, curbs, and ramps. Owners link the noise to service bulletin 23-004 on how the sunroof is mounted. Several report that the roof glass later shattered. In one case it burst while merging onto a highway and cut the driver, the one injury in this group. The rear window also shatters on its own while parked. One owner reports a broken hood latch or cable that kept the hood from opening.
Transmission8No crashes
The engine suddenly loses power at highway speed with a flashing check engine light. It usually happens during hard acceleration to pass, often in rain. The car shakes or feels down a cylinder. Restarting clears the problem, and dealers cannot duplicate it. One new car lost power at 128 miles with transmission warnings and had to be towed. SH-AWD owners report oil leaking between the transmission and transfer case, with one repair quoted at $5533. One shifter jumps back into park after the driver selects drive.
Acceleration and cruise control61 crash
The car drops into limp mode during hard acceleration at 65 to 70 mph, usually while merging or passing in rain. The check engine light flashes, the gas pedal stops responding, and speed falls to about 40 mph with trucks closing from behind. A restart clears it, and dealers find no code. One owner cites a service bulletin by VIN range. One crash: the car surged forward while parking and hit a building, and the owner reports earlier surges.
Electrical5No crashes
AcuraLink remote start fails when the owner sends the command, then starts the car hours later inside a closed garage. That creates a carbon monoxide risk. The infotainment screen sometimes goes blank while driving. One car lost engine, transmission, power steering, and driver aids at a stoplight in rain and went into limp mode. The front passenger seat weight sensor sometimes misses a petite passenger and leaves the air bag off. Phone hands-free calling works only intermittently.
Engine4No crashes
Power drops suddenly when the driver accelerates to pass on the highway, usually in rain. The check engine light blinks, the car runs rough, and it limps along near 40 mph. Drivers describe near misses with semis and following cars while they work toward the shoulder. Shutting the car off for a few minutes and restarting clears the fault. One case came at 7322 miles on a new A-Spec.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints RDX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The rear glass shattered by itself wild parked. This is an ongoing issue. I know of a few people with the same vehicle as me, same year and all and they had to replace the rear glass a few times. Acura needs do a recall on the 2021 RDX. Thanks God it happened wild the vehicle was parked. If this would have happened on the highway it would have definitively cause some damages to other vehicles or even an accident.

Windshield washer pump has failed due to washer nozzles being clogged. Washer pump replaced, but still will not work as the nozzles are clogged. Nozzles are on back order, so therefore unable to clean windshield while driving. No idea when the nozzles will be in stock as this item is on critical back-order.

I bought this car from a Honda dealership 1 month ago and my brakes are squeaking very loud when reversing my car. It happens every morning and is very frustrating. I would like this fixed for it being such an expensive car.

Since buying this car I’ve had a few occasions where the car has not slowed down and feels like the transmission is pushing the car more than it should under hard breaking.

I have been trying to get my vehicle repaired for over a year in response to recall number 24V-064 with no success. The vehicle manufacturer is not providing the required parts to the dealership to address this recall from early 2024. I think additional action needs to be taken against the manufacturer to drive improved behaviour to address safety recall issues in a timely manner

Remedy is available for the recall, but Honda will not fix the recall on my 2 vehicle’s that I own with this open recall. They are saying 2025 maybe. Unacceptable.
Filed with NHTSA, June 2024
On NOV 20th 2021 took the vehicle for Oil change, to Acura dealer. The service tech informed me the hood its not opening. The latch or cable its broken. The part its not in stock. I can't open the hood to check all necessary fluids, especially windshield washer fluid. I think its safety concern when I'm out of washer.

Where the 2021 fits in the RDX's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2021 is the third model year of the RDX's third generation (2019–2023).
Acura updated the RDX for 2022, so a 2021 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2021)
- New front and rear fascias
- New exterior colors and alloy wheel designs
- Interior improvements including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Recalls to confirm (2)

Risk: Driveshaft failure can cause a sudden loss of drive power, or cause the vehicle to roll away when parked if the parking brake is not applied. Either condition can increase the risk of a crash or injury.
Fix: Dealers will replace the right or left front driveshaft as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 24, 2022. Owners may contact Honda customer service 1-888-234-2138. Honda's numbers for this recall are BBY, NBW, and OBX.
