Which RDX is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2020 Acura RDX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylAWD, FWD23–24 mpg
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A RDX that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Check the odometer against these mileages

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2020 Acura RDX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Wipers and visibility78No crashes

Rear window glass breaks apart on its own. It can happen seconds after the rear defroster or remote start comes on, when the driver door closes, or while driving. When it fails, glass falls into the cargo area or onto the road. Reports range from nearly new cars to about 64,000 miles. Owners say dealers acknowledge a bulletin but refuse to cover the repair. Some describe replacement glass being unavailable and leftover shards stuck inside the tailgate. A smaller group reports wipers stuck on that will not turn off.

Rear window glass shatters with no impact. It happens while parked and off, at startup, while warming up, or as the driver door closes. Reports run from about 19,000 to 102,000 miles, and some windows break again after replacement. Dealers often do not diagnose it. Some blame thermal shock or say no defect can be proven, and send owners to their insurer. Some owners were told their vehicle is not covered by bulletin 22-014. Two reports describe the moonroof exploding at highway speeds of 60 to 65 mph.

  • Engine29No crashes

Sudden loss of power under hard acceleration is the main pattern. The check engine light flashes and the SUV goes into limp mode, sometimes unable to go faster than 25 or 30 mph on a highway. Most reports involve rain or humid weather while merging or passing, and restarting the engine clears the problem. Dealers often cannot reproduce it. One owner says an intercooler replacement under bulletin 20-053 did not stop it. Reports begin as early as 1,840 miles. A few higher-mileage filings describe head gasket failures.

  • Body and structure24No crashes

Rear liftgate glass shatters while the car is parked or as a door is closed, and one owner was cut while cleaning up the glass. Repeat breaks happen, some in cold weather after the rear defroster was used. Leftover glass can rattle inside the liftgate after replacement, and one body shop said the whole liftgate needed replacing. A separate complaint is loud popping from the power liftgate as it opens, first reported at 4,454 miles. Owners also report popping noises from the sunroof.

  • Transmission211 crash

Power drops out at highway speed, usually under hard acceleration in rain or humid weather. The check engine light flashes, the transmission stops shifting normally, and only a restart restores power. One crash with 2 injuries describes the vehicle slowing, then speeding up on its own to about 100 mph before hitting 3 vehicles. Other reports include unexpected shifts into sport mode with a transmission warning, a transmission failure with metal shavings at 41,345 miles, and a stalled engine that left the shifter stuck in park.

  • Brakes20No crashes

Front brakes grind, squeal, or scrape on new cars, mostly between about 1,000 and 2,679 miles. Dealers replace pads and rotors, sometimes several times, but the noise comes back within a few hundred miles. Owners say Acura called it a known issue with no fix and not a safety concern. Cold or wet weather makes it worse. A smaller group reports the brakes applying on their own, including an abrupt stop at 45 mph and a brake warning light that comes and goes.

  • Electrical18No crashes

One fire report describes smoke coming from the air vents and flames behind the infotainment screen after more than 15 dealer visits for dash harness problems. Other filings include limp mode with a flashing check engine light, stalling at a stop, hard starts, a blank infotainment screen, and speakers that pop even with the radio off. Water leaking through clogged sunroof drains or a leaking sunroof caused electrical faults, including lights that stayed on until the battery died. One owner reports the car starting itself in a closed garage.

  • Fuel system16No crashes

Most of these filings are about a delayed repair, not a breakdown. Owners say they received a fuel system recall notice, campaign 23V858000, but dealers cannot get the part. One owner was told the parts were no longer available. Most of these owners report no failure while they wait. A few describe symptoms: occasional hard starting, a stall at 20 mph at about 58,000 miles, and a fuel pump that a dealer confirmed had failed at about 53,000 miles.

  • Airbags51 crash

The Passenger Air Bag OFF light stays on while an adult sits in the front seat, so the passenger airbag may not be armed. Owners mention passengers weighing 113 to 125 lbs. Restarting the car sometimes clears the light, but not always. Dealers usually cannot reproduce it, find no codes, or say the system works as designed. One crash report describes the car veering and speeding up while the brakes, steering, and shifter did not respond, and the air bags did not deploy.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints RDX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Wipers and visibility
I am the owner of a 2020 Acura RDX. Approximately 64,000 miles. Car was parked in my driveway. My wife heard a loud bang. Back windshield shattered. Pieces of glass inside and outside the vehicle. The window had no prior dents or cracks.

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Wipers and visibility
The whole rear glass unexpectantly shattered. My Car was parked in the driveway and I found it this way later in the day. The whole rear hatchback glass was shattered everywhere. Glass pieces were starting to fall inside. I called the my local Acura dealer Bobby Rahal and they said this was problem with the RDX but Acura was not covering them. He said there is a TSB tech. service bulletin. This is a very dangerous defect that needs to be recalled.

Filed with NHTSA, December 2025

Engine
Engine judders at 2k rpm around 60 mph. Car has 92k miles with timely documented service maintenance. Took car to the dealership and said there’s a head gasket leak on cylinder 4 and needs to be replaced. Contacted American Honda about the issue and they said they cannot cover the repair cost. They also don’t have the replacement part for the fuel pump recall for a long time as well.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2024

Engine
The emission light flashes and puts the vehicle in "Limp mode." The speed is drastically reduced and won't exceed 30 mph. Horrify experience. The problem seems related to rain and acceleration. Now the car is towed. No warning before it happens. But the emission light was flashing afterward.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2024

Body and structure
Reported problem of rear tail gate making loud popping noises First reported at 4454 miles Current reading 21470 miles Gunshot popping noises continue when tailgate opens. Contacted dealer and Acura with ticket numbers Unresolved with incessant diagnosis and false assurances

Filed with NHTSA, February 2022

Body and structure
Rear windshield shattered while parked and the car was not running. There was a bulletin only at the time. Called customer service. They advised to submit an insurance claim, which I didn’t do. The dealership disputed with them and ended up replacing it at their cost. Later several others in the area experienced the same thing. Acura acknowledged there was a problem with the rear windshield defroster. I still have pieces of glass within the hatch.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2023

Transmission
Powertrain failed in 2020 Acura RDX Tech Pkg AWD. Only 2 weeks after the 6 year warranty expired on the vehicle the powertrain failed and set off the check engine light. Dealer service department found an excessive amount of shavings in the plug. The vehicle only had 41,345 miles on it before transmission/powertrain failed and there was only 1 owner for the vehicle. It was purchased brand new from the dealer and vehicle was well-maintained.

Filed with NHTSA, April 2026

Transmission
My car transmission light came on...check engine. Then said blind spot warning not working. See dealer. My car transmission warning message appears every time I accelerate to 60mph. It switches to sport mode on its on and I am unable to switch it back. My cameras malfunction for blind spots. The car sound is louder and usually it's quiet. I take my car in regularly for servid3 with the dealer. This is very strange. I am scared to go past 60mph.

Where the 2020 fits in the RDX's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2020 is the second model year of the RDX's third generation (2019–2023).

Acura updated the RDX for 2022, so a 2020 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2022 (not on a 2020)

  • New front and rear fascias
  • New exterior colors and alloy wheel designs
  • Interior improvements including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
