Which RDX is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2019 Acura RDX. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 2.0L 4-cyl | 4WD, FWD | 23–24 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A RDX that averages well under the EPA 23 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Check the odometer against these mileages
Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Acura RDX, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Wipers and visibility90No crashes
Rear window glass breaks on its own, sometimes cracking first and then dropping chunks into the cargo area when a door shuts. Reports point to parked cars, cold mornings with remote start or the defroster running, and repeat failures on the same vehicle. Some owners say replacement glass is backordered. A separate complaint is a front windshield that cracks from minor road debris and keeps needing replacement, which also means recalibrating the camera and radar safety systems.
Rear tailgate glass shatters without impact, usually while parked, often just as a door opens or closes. Reported mileages run from about 24,000 to 126,000, and some cars have the failure again after the glass is replaced. Owners link it to service bulletin 22-014 but say they were told their VIN was not included or that the warranty had expired. Most say the manufacturer offered no help, leaving repairs to dealers, glass shops, or insurance.
Engine45No crashes
Power cuts out under hard acceleration, usually while passing or merging at highway speed. The check engine light flashes, the car drops into limp mode and will barely do 20 to 30 mph. Turning it off and restarting usually clears it. Rain or wet roads come up often, and most reports fall within the first 20,000 miles. Dealers often find no stored codes and cannot reproduce it. One later report describes a head gasket failure with coolant leaking into the engine.
Transmission34No crashes
Sudden power loss on the highway is the main pattern, with a flashing check engine light and a restart that brings the car back to normal. Other reports describe the engine revving while the car won't go past 20 mph, a delay of about 3 seconds before the transmission responds after slowing down, and gears sticking until the car is restarted. Some describe the car lurching forward under braking with high revs. One owner reports metal shavings in the transmission fluid at 60,000 miles and a $13000 repair.
Electrical30No crashes
The infotainment screen goes dark, taking the backup camera with it, or stays on after shutdown and drains the battery. Horns stop working and dealers replace internal horn parts. Some cars lose all power on the highway, with every warning light on and heavy steering. Others go into limp mode during acceleration, or the auto-stop feature shuts off the dash and all systems at a stop. Reports also link rear glass shattering to the defroster grid, and one describes a theft through a weak driver's door lock cylinder.
Body and structure22No crashes
Rear glass shatters without impact, often in cold weather or after the rear defroster or wiper has run. It happens with children in the back seat, and some owners find glass fragments trapped inside the liftgate panels after the repair. The panoramic moonroof has also burst with a loud bang. A separate safety issue is a power tailgate that closes on its own and does not reverse when it hits someone. Two injuries are reported, including one person pinned by the tailgate.
Acceleration and cruise control13No crashes
Power drops out when the driver floors it to pass or merge. The check engine light flashes and the car goes into limp mode until it is restarted, often in rain and on cars with only a few thousand miles. Other reports describe the engine revving while speed stays near 20 mph, brake hold letting go so the car creeps toward traffic or pedestrians, and the radar system braking hard or slowing the car when nothing is ahead.
Airbags111 crash
The passenger airbag off light comes on while an adult is seated and belted, which means the front passenger airbag may not deploy. Passengers weighing 95 to 120 lb are cited. The problem comes and goes, and a restart usually clears it. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and replacing sensors, the seat frame, the weight plate, and the restraint computer has not fixed it for some owners. One crash report describes no airbags deploying in a head-on collision, with injuries.
Steering52 crashes
Power steering assist cuts out or the steering locks up at highway speed, sometimes as a collision mitigation warning flashes. One crash with injury followed a sudden loss of steering assist in traffic. A second crash involved a front tie rod that broke at low speed. Other reports describe lane keeping assist swerving across lane lines and braking without cause, and a radar fault that shut the car down with hard steering.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints RDX owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
The back windshield on my 19 RDX spontaneously shattered on 1/5/2024 driving on the highway while using my rear defroster in cold weather. No warning lights. There is a known issue with this happening and a service bulletin 22-014 pertaining to this issue. My Insurance was notified. A glass repair shop and an Acura dealer both repaired my vehicle. Honda corporate refuses to acknowledge or pay for repairs as 'my VIN is not included in recall'
Filed with NHTSA, February 2025
On 11/19/2025, I opened my driver's side door and got in the drivers seat. When I closed the door my rear windshield shattered. The glass then began to cave in creating a hole. The problem is acknowledged by the manufacturer as outlined in NHTSA #: 10225484 (service bulletin). I called Spitzer Acura dealership in Pittsburgh who said I would need to call a glass company and they wouldn't cover it.

all maintenance performed at Acura. 6 weeks after the Transmission aged out of warranty dealer found metal shavings in Transmission oil. Car had only 60k miles. $13000 maintenance bill to fix.
Filed with NHTSA, March 2025
This morning I awoke to another shattered rear windshield. I had the exact same thing happen in January of this year. This is my second out of cost rear windshield replacement due to the known problem Acura has failed to address. I have spent over 1,000 dollars on replacement glass in addition to my car being in the shop for 3 months waiting for a fuel pump. This is ridiculous, and something needs to be done.
Filed with NHTSA, November 2024
Was driving on the interstate with slight rain and trying to accelerate but then the check engine light started flashing and the car would not accelerate. Speed on the interstate is 70mph, but the car immediately dropped down to 35mph. Traffic behind me had to slow down to avoid an accident as I had to move the car to the side of the road. Restarted the car and the check engine light disappeared.

Where the 2019 fits in the RDX's history
Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.
The 2019 is the first model year of the RDX's third generation (2019–2023). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Acura fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.
Acura updated the RDX for 2022, so a 2019 does not have those changes.
What changed for 2022 (not on a 2019)
- New front and rear fascias
- New exterior colors and alloy wheel designs
- Interior improvements including wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto
Should you avoid the first year of a redesign? See the 45-car study.
