Which XC40 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Volvo XC40. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
ElectricAWD, RWD254–293 mi range
2.0L 4-cylHybridAWD26 mpg
  • The 2024 Volvo XC40 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • With a full charge, the range estimate on the dash should land near the EPA figure of 254–293 miles. A much lower number on a mild day can mean a worn battery; ask for a battery health report.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Volvo XC40, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Backup camera41 crash

Reversing aids fail in two main ways. Rear camera displays drop out: proximity dots vanish mid-maneuver, the image goes very dim, or a "Camera is Unavailable" message appears as the infotainment screen freezes and goes dark. Repeated dealer software reloads do not cure the freezing, and one mechanic could not find a cause for the dim image. In other reports, the car brakes violently while backing slowly, even with nothing nearby, and one driver reports a whiplash-like injury. One crash into shelving followed the warning dots disappearing.

  • Brakes21 crash

Unexpected movement at low speed drives these complaints. One describes the engine revving abnormally and the car accelerating on its own through a parking lot into a tree. The front airbags deployed, the front collision avoidance did not engage, and one person was hurt. Another pattern affects the Recharge: when starting on a slope, the car moves the wrong way after a gear is selected, rolling about 20 inches before the brake stops it. A dealer confirmed this behavior and reproduced it on another car.

  • Electrical21 crash

The Park function does not always hold or engage. In one crash, the car stopped after Park was selected, then lurched forward into a closed garage door with no warning lights. The driver had felt the car buck after shifting to Park on earlier occasions. Other owners must press the Park button 2 to 3 times before the car leaves Drive and report close calls with light poles and other vehicles. Both patterns create a risk to anyone standing in front of the car.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints XC40 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Backup camera
The Infotainment system in this automobile freezes frequently denying access to critical auto controls such as, one pedal EV driving, air conditioning/heating controls and many other controls. I have received a message that the, "Camera is Unavailable" and the screen goes dark. The dealer has attempted to reload the software and update the software multiple times all without any remedy.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Electrical
This issue has happened multiple times while owning this vehicle. Sometimes the car does engage into Park after pushing the park button. Sometimes we have to push the Park button 2-3 times just for it to move from Drive to Park. We have been into some close calls with the car not engaging in Park and coming close to crashing into either light pole or another vehicle. Could cause injury even anyone was present in front of the vehicle
