Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Volkswagen ID.4, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical8No crashes

The center display goes black, freezes, or reboots without warning, often while the car is moving and sometimes at highway speed. Climate controls, navigation, audio, CarPlay, and the backup camera stop working until it restarts, and one owner says the instrument panel blanks too. Switching to wired CarPlay did not help, and one report says no fix was available yet. Other complaints describe a child lock error that disables windows and locks, repeated strandings from electrical failures, one sudden surge while parking, and one fire-related report from a public charging session.

  • Acceleration and cruise control32 crashes

Sudden acceleration at parking-lot speeds is the common thread, with drivers saying the vehicle surged forward while their foot was on the brake. One driver says regenerative braking mode was on and the accelerator was never touched. Two of the three complaints ended in crashes with parked cars, and one repair bill came to about $17,000. Owners report no warning lights before the surge and no explanation of the cause from the dealer. Every event happened at very low speed, which makes it a serious loss-of-control risk near people and other cars.

  • Backup camera21 crash

Unintended forward lunges from a stop appear in one crash-related report, where the vehicle surged in regenerative braking mode with the brake applied, hit a parked van, and the airbags did not deploy. A separate complaint describes no audible pedestrian alert while reversing, at 3,100 miles. In that case the dealer said the vehicle was not equipped with the feature and made no repair. Only two complaints are filed here, and they describe unrelated problems: one is unintended acceleration, the other a missing reverse warning sound.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints ID.4 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
While driving the instrument panel reboots and or just goes blank, leaving the vehicle without any display. This will happen multiple times per week and has happened since I purchased the vehicle. I have reported this to the dealer without any solution.

Electrical
This vehicle was purchased new on May 23, 2025. On several occasions it has left us 'stranded' due to electrical failures. Dates: 06/09/2025, 07/03/2025, 08/06/2025, 08/08/2025

Filed with NHTSA, August 2025

Acceleration and cruise controlCrash reported
On 6/20/25, while pulling into a parking space at very slow speed, the car suddenly, without my control, violently accellerated. This could have resulted in pesonal injury or death. The car was stopped by crashing into two, nearby parked cars. The dealer's collision shop repaired the car at a cost of approximately $17,000. They did not provide an explanation of the possible cause. There were no warning signs of an issue prior to the event.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Acceleration and cruise control
the vehicle unexpectedly accelerated while parking. the vehicle was in regenerative breaking mode and my foot was on the brake pedal. at no point was my foot in contact with the acceleration pedal.

Where the 2025 fits in the ID.4's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2025 is the first model year of the ID.4's second generation (2025 on). First years of a redesign often carry teething problems that Volkswagen fixes in later years, so the checks above matter more than usual.

Volkswagen updated the ID.4 for 2026, so a 2025 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2026 (not on a 2025)

  • Renaming to ID.Tiguan
  • Updated styling
