Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Volkswagen ID.4, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical21No crashes

Screens go dark, freeze, or reboot while driving, taking the speedometer, backup camera, and head-up display with them. Some reports pair this with a 12V battery warning. Other patterns include door handles and locks that keep failing even after replacement, onboard charging failures, and navigation errors that make adaptive cruise brake hard on the highway. One report describes a windshield heating element bursting into flame, and others describe fire-risk or battery alarms while the car is plugged in. Several owners also report weeks or months without their car while waiting on recall work.

  • Body and structure4No crashes

Most of these reports describe a wait, not a failure: owners received a recall notice, but the dealer had no part to do the repair, and the delay ran past what they consider reasonable. Separate reports describe front door handles with dead spots that make doors hard to open, doors unlocking on their own in bad weather, the alarm disarming, and doors that look locked but still open. One report also mentions intermittent charging failures that the dealer could not diagnose.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

Automatic braking kicks in for no reason on the interstate when navigation loses the car's position and reports a lower speed zone. Adaptive cruise and automatic distance keeping turn off and back on without warning, and owners say the dealer has no known fix. Another report describes a maneuver braking unavailable warning traced to damaged front parking sensors, with a $1700 replacement bill. Only 2 complaints are on file, but both describe driver-assist features dropping out or acting unpredictably.

  • Brakes2No crashes

The brake pedal sinks or fails to slow the car right away, and drivers stop only by pumping it. No warning lights come on. One report cites the ABS going offline and an inoperable brake booster with no fault codes. Another describes the radio, windows, and headlamps misbehaving during the same braking event. Dealers could not find the cause or repair the car in either case. Only 2 complaints are on file, but both describe a real loss-of-control risk.

  • Transmission2No crashes

The car drops into reduced-power turtle mode and tells the driver to park immediately. In that report, a battery module replacement did not fix it, and the repair stalled on back-ordered parts with no timeline. A separate report describes the car rolling backward on inclines while still in drive once the brake pedal is released, because Auto-Hold engages only with firmer pedal pressure. That creates a risk of rolling into cars or pedestrians.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints ID.4 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
Volkswagon is being irresponsible with their response to resolving the door issue on my vehicle. The door has opened twice while driving as clearly related to an electrical issue. This is a very dangerous scenario as I cannot predict which door opens at which time. It could be any. I have a video of my door jamb. My vehicle is brand new with 0 damage, this is clearly a manufacturer defect that VW is neglecting to resolve timely.

Electrical
Car will not start, although there is 70% charge. This has occurred 3 times. Gets towed to deal where they tell us "it magically fixed itself." Error message states that 12v battery is not working. Was advised by dealer that recall would not fix this problem. THey advised this can happen any time the car is charged (EV vehicle) and we will just have to tow it back to be "reset" each time.

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Body and structure
Since the door handle recall. The door handles on the front driver and passenger side have dead spots which make it harder and annoying to open the door. Volkswagens has even admitted to these dead spots .

Filed with NHTSA, June 2025

Automatic emergency braking
GPS/navigation cannot determine position. ACC/driver-assist features are sometimes disabled, but then reactivate with no warning. Car will automatically brake for no reason on interstate since navigation suddenly indicates it has has entered, say, a 30 mph zone 100 miles to the east. Automatic distance keeping from vehicle in front turns off/on at random. VW dealer and Corporate are aware of the problem but state there is no known fix.
