Which 1500 is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2025 Ram 1500. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating

3.6L 6-cylHybrid4WD, RWD21–23 mpg
  • The 2025 Ram 1500 was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 1500 that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2025 Ram 1500, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical58No crashes

Instrument clusters go blank or reboot while driving, sometimes hiding the speedometer and warning lights. Many reports start under 1,000 miles. Trucks also fail to start after sitting, with dead batteries that return after dealers replace them. Auto stop/start can shut the engine off at a stop and drop the truck into Park, much like a stall. Warning messages for driver-assist systems cycle on and off at random. One report describes a fire at the dealer, blamed on the starter. A cluster recall exists, but some owners say the blank screen came back after the recall repair.

  • Transmission251 crash

Sudden loss of drive is the most serious pattern. The engine revs but the truck will not move, at traffic lights and at highway speeds, and owners describe near rear-end collisions. Some trucks shut off and shift themselves into Park. The transmission also refuses to shift into 8th gear or keeps dropping to 7th, and repeated software flashes help only briefly. Hard clunks on shifts and 4WD that will not engage also appear. One crash-related report describes a parked truck rolling away after a parking brake fault. Most problems start in the first few thousand miles.

  • Brakes19No crashes

The brake pedal sinks to the floor, often along with ABS, brake and emergency braking warnings. Several owners report it within the first few hundred miles, sometimes at startup and sometimes while driving. Dealers often cannot reproduce it, and replacement brake control modules are frequently backordered, leaving trucks in the shop for weeks. One owner was told the wait could be about a year. Other reports cover an ABS module leaking brake fluid and front brakes that chirp or rattle. Greasing the brake parts only quiets the noise for a while.

  • Steering152 crashes

Trucks pull to the right at highway speeds, often from the first day. Alignments read in spec, and a steering module reflash under a service bulletin did not cure it for several owners. The steering wheel can also sit off center. A second pattern is sudden loss of power steering, often during a wider electrical failure with many warning lights. Replacement steering parts are backordered in several reports. Two complaints are crash-related, including one where the front passenger wheel came off during a turn and the truck hit a parked vehicle.

  • Engine10No crashes

Misfire codes, mainly P0300, turn on the check engine light. Engines run rough or stall, often on cold starts, and some reports begin at a few hundred miles. Owners say this affects both the twin-turbo six and the 3.6L eTorque engine, and dealers say no fix is available yet. Some report hesitation when pulling into traffic and worse fuel economy. Other reports describe engines shutting off on the freeway or at idle, stop/start failing to restart, and a secondary water pump failure with a coolant leak.

  • Lane keeping8No crashes

Warnings that automatic emergency braking and blind spot monitoring are unavailable keep appearing, then disappear, then come back. Owners make repeated dealer trips, and one waited 50 days for parts while driving with the systems off. Blind spot lights stay on with nothing there or trigger falsely in heavy rain. Some owners report a module replacement as the only lasting fix. Separately, the blind spot audio alert has no volume setting and is loud enough to startle the driver. It also sounds for trailers, poles and oncoming traffic.

  • Automatic emergency braking71 crash

Automatic emergency braking engages with nothing ahead, stopping the truck hard at around 30 to 35 mph. One report describes minor seatbelt injuries. Other owners report the opposite: no warning or braking in near rear-end situations, and adaptive cruise following too closely. An "AEB/ACC Unavailable Service Required" message turns these systems off, including while towing. Faults often clear on restart, so dealers find no stored codes. One crash-related report says the parking sensors gave no warning before the truck hit a light pole.

  • Exterior lights7No crashes

Headlights flicker off and back on while driving, with no warning light. The driver's side headlight aims too far left, which leaves the road ahead dark and dazzles oncoming traffic. Dealers say it cannot be adjusted. Headlights may not come on at night when the key fob is used. High beams may not work with auto lights on. Other reports cover trailer lights cutting out with a connection message and the backup camera screen jumping to full brightness at night. A headlight recall exists but did not apply to every complaining owner.

In owners' own words

Electrical
2025 Ram 4x4 had approx 2500 miles when the instrument panel went completely blank. Was driving so pulled over, turned off engine, then back on with no cure. Went to my destination, parked the truck for 4 hrs and when returned problem was gone. Went to the dealer to report the issue and they said there wasn't a fix. Now I have received a safety recall on the truck 3 weeks later. I'll go back to the dealer to see what they can do???

Filed with NHTSA, January 2026

Electrical
Driving on the highway with cruise control set, heard a beep and looked at my instrument cluster. Cluster went blank, cruise control turned off, lane management turned off. Then another beep turned on instrument panel and now was frozen at 0 as I was driving at highway speed. Next I was stopped at the off ramp and instrument panel said I was doing 57. I have videos of it happening. And it is in a constant frozen to reboot stage

Filed with NHTSA, October 2025

Transmission
Dash cluster blacks out. Have taken to two different dealerships and told can not replicate. Started at 1200 miles. Safety issues makes it hazardous to drive. Transmission fails to shift to 8th gear. Can be at 70 MPH and stays in 7th gear. Two dealerships not resolved. Last dealership followed service bulletin and updated transmission. Appears not to have worked

Filed with NHTSA, September 2025

Transmission
Transmission continues to shift poorly - will not shift to 8th at speeds over 55 MPH, drops from 8th to 7th continuously. Has been to the shop 2 May 2025 - flashed the transmission, 8 Sep 2025 flashed the transmission, 20 Jan 2026 updated transmission. Updates work for short periods of time. Truck only has 11769 miles

Filed with NHTSA, February 2026

Brakes
The truck brake pedal got hard and went all the way to the bottom. Dash lighted up like a Christmas tree. Luckily I was entering a parking lot so I was going slow and was able to park the truck. Truck only has 453 miles and is only 2 weeks since purchase. If there's a recall for this issue I believe it wasn't taken care of before selling it to me.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

Brakes
Possible brake caliper, power steering, belt or other issue. Noise was produced when salesperson was in the vehicle. Scheduled maintenance to diagnose the issue. No warnings before or after and issue is persistent since truck was driven off the lot the first time. Under coasting conditions, truck emits a single or back to back squeaking noise from the passenger front wheel area and also feels like a slight pull from the same area when noise is heard.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2024

Steering
Brand new 2025 ram 1500 is out of alignment at 800 miles. It pulls to the right. On highway, it almost turns itself to the other lane. Major disaster maker.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2025

SteeringCrash reported
While making a left turn, truck pulled hard to the right causing it to hit a parked truck. Upon exiting my truck seen that entire passenger front wheel was off. No warning whatsoever that there was a problem before this happened. Wreck occured out of state but truck is being transported to my dealer. it will be available for inspection.
