Which Prius is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2024 Toyota Prius. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylHybridFWD, 4WD54–57 mpg
2.0L 4-cylPlug-in hybridFWD600 mi range
  • The 2024 Toyota Prius was sold in two versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Prius that averages well under the EPA 52 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Owners report these failures starting around the mileages below. A car inside one of these ranges deserves a closer look at that part, or records showing it was already fixed.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2024 Toyota Prius, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical5No crashes

The 12-volt battery goes dead and the car will not start, often with no warning beforehand. Some drivers get stranded more than once, and one says a dealer found nothing wrong after a low-battery warning. Problems show up early, with one report at 7000 miles. A dead battery also locks the electronic rear hatch. It then opens only from an emergency release under the rear deck, and that takes a screwdriver. The other complaints describe long waits for a pending recall repair on the rear door lock because parts are not available.

  • Wheels and tires4No crashes

Tire sidewalls fail on the 19-inch low-profile tires. One car needs two replacement tires within weeks, at 10,848 and 11,749 miles, and the dealer blames potholes. The bigger complaint is that the car has no spare tire or jack, and Toyota offers neither as an option. When a tire fails at night, the driver has to keep going on it until reaching a safe place to stop.

Sidewalls on the factory Bridgestone Ecopia tires, size 195/60R17, get damaged. In one case, a mechanic finds a bubble in a front tire's sidewall during a routine rotation at 10,400 miles and calls the tire unsafe. In another, a tire goes flat in the driveway from a cut sidewall. The same owner later learns from a dealer that another tire has a plug in its side, and that tire is replaced too. Both reports end with new tires.

  • Airbags21 crash

Airbags go off in two kinds of events. In the first, the car accelerates hard when the driver taps the pedal while straightening out after parallel parking. It hits a stoop, the airbag deploys and smoke comes from the engine, at about 3,000 miles. The same report says the car braked by itself three times while reversing, with nothing nearby. In the second, the airbags deploy after the car only rubs a curb, leaving little damage. That driver is now afraid to drive the car.

  • Exterior lights2No crashes

Turning on the headlights drops the dash and center screen to their night brightness, and drivers cannot turn them back up. In daytime rain or fog, or in states that require headlights, the gauges and screen become hard to read. One driver says this is worse for people over 50. Nothing is broken. The car is designed to work this way. A dealer says it cannot be fixed, and Toyota customer service says it will do nothing short of a recall.
