These checks are specific to this model year. For tires, body panels, fluids, and the other basics every used car needs, use the general inspection guide.

Which GLE is it?

EPA figures for each version of the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.

VersionDriveEPA rating
2.0L 4-cylGas4WD, RWD22 mpg
3.0L 6-cylHybrid4WD23 mpg
4.0L 8-cylHybrid4WD19 mpg
  • The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE was sold in three versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A GLE that averages well under the EPA 19 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLE, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Electrical261 crash

Dead 48-volt batteries leave the car unable to start, and it cannot be jump-started. Several reports describe this within the first few thousand miles, some on brand-new cars, with repeat battery replacements and software updates that do not stick. The same system also shuts the car off while driving, including at highway speed. One crash with two injuries followed repeated power loss and the car drifting on its own. Two fire-related reports include a parked car burning and a burning-plastic smell. Other complaints cover wiring harness insulation breaking down, a black backup camera screen, and a weeks-long wait for a replacement battery from Germany.

  • Engine14No crashes

Cylinder head failure on the GLE 350 dominates these reports. Symptoms include misfires, rough idle, shaking, jerking, loss of power, and a flashing check engine light, sometimes right after a starter battery warning. Several cars stall in traffic or intersections with no warning, and some need a full engine replacement, with one quote of $28,000. Failures appear from about 22,000 to 74,000 miles, and repeat misfires after a prior repair are reported. Owners describe long waits for replacement engines shipped from Germany and costly out-of-warranty repairs.

  • Transmission8No crashes

Sudden total shutdowns are the main pattern. The engine and every display go dark while driving, often with no warning, and the car may not restart or may stay stuck in Drive. Reports point to the 48-volt system, a failing DC/DC converter or starter-generator, and a transmission control unit fault that triggers limp mode with "car cannot shift" and battery warnings. Near rear-end collisions are described. One AMG GLE53 report describes the car rolling while in Park. Catastrophic engine failure at 49,000 miles also appears.

  • Wipers and visibility6No crashes

Water leaks are the most common complaint here. Clogged sunroof drains let water soak the floor mats, grow mold, and cause electrical glitches such as the rear hatch unlocking and the radio changing stations. Another report describes water dripping onto the front passenger floor at 57,432 miles. The windshield washers can stop spraying because a strainer on the pump clogs, and the repair is denied under warranty in one case. A sunroof also shatters while the car is parked at 10,000 miles.

Wipers chatter loudly and leave the glass poorly cleaned, and one dealer calls it a common problem with no known fix. The other report describes the sunroof glass exploding at highway speed with nothing striking it, and the shade kept the glass out of the cabin. Only two complaints fall here, but the sunroof breakage matches similar reports filed under other categories for this model year.

  • Brakes21 crash

Engine shutoffs while driving, paired with weak braking and loud grinding, appear in a crash report with four injuries. That car spends repeated time in the shop without a lasting fix. A separate report describes the car nudging forward again and again while idling in Park, which the dealer does not treat as a concern. With only two complaints, the pattern is thin, but both involve the car moving or stopping in ways the driver does not expect.

  • Acceleration and cruise control2No crashes

Repeated drops into a reduced-power mode while driving are reported, returning even after relay, control module, wiring, and software work. The adaptive cruise control is also described braking hard on its own after misreading speed limit signs, such as treating 80 mph as 60. Turning off the sign-related assist settings and installing every available software update does not stop it in that report. Both problems create a risk of being hit from behind.

  • Body and structure2No crashes

Wind noise from the sunroof becomes a loud, high-pitched whistle at speed or in strong wind, with concern about poor seals. A separate report describes interior panels going dark because a control module corroded from a water leak, found at 18,500 miles and left unrepaired. Both complaints connect to the sealing problems that show up across other categories for this year.

  • Automatic emergency braking2No crashes

A "camera view restricted" warning pops up while driving, and the automatic emergency braking shows as unavailable even when nothing blocks the camera. The message clears on its own but returns more often over time. The dealer could not replicate it and did nothing in one report. Only two complaints are filed, but both describe the same false warning.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints GLE owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Electrical
I was driving at full speed on the interstate (75mph) when the vehicle died completely. I had only seconds to maneuver the vehicle to the shoulder. There was no indication of a service issue with the vehicle prior to this incident. The car is/was approximately 2 weeks old, with about 500 miles of usage. Vehicle would not restart so I could attempt to get to a safer location.

Filed with NHTSA, September 2021

Electrical
GLE53 would not start. The car threw an error stating 12v battery malfunction.(Impacted the 48V battery) This essentially disables the vehicle completely. This is 2021 GLE53 with less than 5000 miles. There is also an issue with the side-view mirror and wind noise.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2021

Engine
DTC codr P219E is is a known issue for this Vehicle. Cylinder issue. This is a world wide known issue and Mercedes benz in Canada has sent out email giving out warranty extension for M260 cylinder head but here in the US, there is no recall or warrant for this issue making customers spend over 7k for repairs. Where the 2021 fits in the GLE's history

Redesigns and mid-cycle updates change what can go wrong.

The 2021 is the second model year of the GLE's fourth generation (2020–2023).

Mercedes-Benz updated the GLE for 2024, so a 2021 does not have those changes.

What changed for 2024 (not on a 2021)

  • Restyled headlights and taillights
  • New steering wheel design
  • New variants including GLE450e
