  • The 2019 Ram 1500 was sold in five versions. Confirm which one this is from the window sticker, the engine cover, or the VIN report before you compare prices.
  • On the hybrid, watch for the car moving off on electric power at low speed and for any hybrid system warning on the dash.
  • Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A 1500 that averages well under the EPA 17 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.

Why these checks: what owners reported

NHTSA complaints for the 2019 Ram 1500, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.

  • Steering31310 crashes

Power steering assist cuts out without warning, often with a "power steering unavailable" message, leaving the wheel very hard to turn. Other reports describe the wheel sticking or catching when turning left, sometimes from new, and dealers often cannot reproduce it. Ten complaints involve crashes, including drivers who could not complete turns. Dealers usually call for a full rack and pinion with the electric module, quoted around $3,000 to $3,500, with some parts on backorder. Many owners mention a recall for Classic trucks but say their VIN is not covered. Assist failures cluster between 60,000 and 81,000 miles.

  • Electrical2466 crashes

Sudden stalls and full power loss while driving are the most alarming pattern, sometimes with a "Vehicle Not in Park" message and dead turn signals. On eTorque V8 trucks the alternator, or motor generator unit, fails and strands the truck, and replacement parts are backordered for weeks. Other reports cover dark or flickering instrument clusters, a flickering backup camera, and an ABS module fault that shuts off stability control. Six complaints involve crashes and two involve fires. Dealers frequently find no stored codes after a stall.

  • Transmission1751 crash

The truck shifts itself into park, or demands to be put in park, while slowing for stops and turns. A "service shifter" warning often comes first, and some trucks get stuck in park or stall when put in gear. This tends to start between 20,000 and 45,000 miles, and dealer software updates often fail to fix it. Other complaints cover eTorque motor generator failures with months-long part waits, front transfer case and axle failures, rear differential damage taking out the transmission, and one diesel fire while towing.

  • Engine921 crash

Hemi V8 ticking that progresses to lifter and camshaft failure is the dominant pattern, with metal in the oil, broken pushrods, or a full engine replacement costing over $10,000. These failures cluster between 50,000 and 68,000 miles. Exhaust manifolds warp and snap bolts, often around 72,000 to 80,000 miles, causing leaks and noise. Head gasket and coolant leaks, low oil pressure from a failed pump, and alternator failures that shut the engine off also appear. On the diesel, EGR cooler cracks cause heavy smoke, and one report describes a fire.

  • Airbags6736 crashes

Airbags fail to deploy in frontal and side crashes, including head-on hits into guardrails and other vehicles at 25 to 60 mph. More than half of these complaints are crash-related, with 32 injuries, among them broken necks, a broken back, and concussions. Some reports add seat belts that did not lock or tighten. The manufacturer's usual reply is that deceleration was too low to trigger deployment. One owner cites a factory recall tied to an unconfigured seat position sensor. No warning light comes on beforehand.

  • Body and structure631 crash

Water leaks into the cab are the main complaint, usually from a cracked rear window frame, third brake light, or rear door seals, leading to wet carpet and mold. Leaks often show up between 31,000 and 36,803 miles. Owners also report oil pans rusting through, power tailgates dropping open while driving or falling off their hinges, a driver's door hinge detaching and causing a fall, and a cracked roof seam. Dealers often only reseal the rear glass, and owners say coverage for frame replacement is hard to obtain.

  • Brakes598 crashes

An ABS module failure turns off stability control, antilock braking, cruise control, and trailer brakes at once, and replacement modules have been backordered for months. Some drivers learned of an ABS software recall only after a crash. Other reports describe the truck surging forward with the brake pedal pressed, false automatic braking when reversing on a grade, a rusted rear dust shield locking a wheel, and pulling right under braking. One fire traced to a seized rear caliper. Eight complaints involve crashes.

  • Fuel system41No crashes

The tank refuses fuel. The pump clicks off every few dollars, gas spits back from the capless filler, and a fill-up can take 20 minutes. Cold weather makes it worse. Dealers blame a stuck rollover valve and replace the whole tank, quoted between $1,400 and $3,000, and tanks have been backordered. A service bulletin to adjust the fill neck did not help one owner. Fill problems appear from about 23,400 miles onward. Less often, fuel pump failures stall the engine on the road and misfires return after injector replacement.

In owners' own words

Excerpts from complaints 1500 owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.

Steering
When turning the steering wheel right I felt a resistance and a grinding/rubbing in the steering system. This has happened several times to both me and my spouse. We have taken it to the dealer, and were told it could not be duplicated. The issue first happened when the truck was less than 6 months old, and just happened again today for maybe the 10th time at just over 2 years and 35,000 miles.

Filed with NHTSA, July 2021

Steering
My ABS Brake Module failed with no warning until after failure. All dash warning lights illuminated after failure rear brakes locked up and would not release causing me to be stranded and requiring a tow service. Dealership confirmed failed ABS module and is currently being repaired but not covered by manufacturer resulting in out of pocket cost to myself. Truck has 57,408 miles on it.

Electrical
While driving vehicle set to park and would not drive until I turned it off and back. Days later every time I set to reverse it automatically set V back to park and was not able to drive that evening. I have seen multiple issues on RAM forum so I took vehicle in for inspection and now have been told Transmission needs replacement although vehicle has less than 70,000 miles on it. Also dashboard lights all light up turned off and on problem seems electrical

Filed with NHTSA, December 2024

Electrical
I cannot properly refuel my tank. It takes me 25 minutes to fill 5 gallons of gas. The pump keeps shutting off like it thinks my car is full. All gas station pump are doing the same thing. Also my Navi goes off course. Sirius XM says my location is one place according to their system but I am 200 miles away. They say it shows it is working on their end but there is clearly an electrical or navigation glitch with my car.

Filed with NHTSA, November 2021

Transmission
The driver side exhaust manifold is leaking. I have had the passenger side replaced already. That issue occurred around 55,000 miles on my Ram. I am at 80,000 miles now with the driver's side having the same issue. I believe it is a bolt. I can smell exhaust and think this could cause a fire if not corrected. Along with the fire issue, I have noticed a decrease in gas mileage and believe to be experiencing lag or loss of power at times.

Filed with NHTSA, February 2023

Transmission
The vehicle will require that you shift it into park when slowing causing you to have to stop the vehicle place it in park then back into gear. This has happened regularly since about 20,000 miles on the vehicle, most often occurs in warmer weather months and it randomly occurs but at least weekly. This is a known issue among many Ram owners as noted in the online chats and forums. Pulling into traffic can be an issue.

Filed with NHTSA, May 2025

Engine
Timing chain cover leaking oil for 2nd time with only 32,000 miles on the vehicle. Ram dealer repaired once already in 2022. Loosing antifreeze but dealer says the vehicle is not. Service def system comes on at random and says see dealer. While this is happening it does a count down on the temperature gauge in the dash and check engine light comes on. Dealer say they can’t find anything wrong.

Filed with NHTSA, March 2022

Engine
Had bot exhaust manifolds replaced with under 44k miles first manifold cracked under 20k miles. Ram will only honor these repairs until 60k 5 years. Everyone I know has had theirs crack this is obviously a design or casting problem . It will likely happen again . Why is this company not held to fix these issues under initial owner after the warranty. especially if it is a known issue.
