Which Versa is it?
EPA figures for each version of the 2018 Nissan Versa. Use them to confirm you are looking at the version that was advertised, and as a yardstick on the test drive.
| Version | Drive | EPA rating |
|---|---|---|
| 1.6L 4-cyl | FWD | 34 mpg |
- Reset the trip computer at the start of the drive. A Versa that averages well under the EPA 34 mpg combined on a mixed route may have an engine or tire problem.
Why these checks: what owners reported
NHTSA complaints for the 2018 Nissan Versa, grouped by the part owners named. Open a row to read what goes wrong.
Airbags127 crashes
Airbags fail to deploy in hard crashes, including deer strikes, run-offs into ditches, and side and T-bone impacts at highway speeds. There are 7 crash-related reports, and the injuries listed include concussions and neck, back, and spine injuries. A second pattern is an airbag warning light that blinks or stays on. Dealers blame a failed passenger seat sensor that turns off the passenger airbag, crinkled wiring, or the airbag module, which was quoted at a little over 1300 dollars. In some reports the light comes back after a repair.
Electrical12No crashes
The engine shuts off while driving or stalls at stops, and the driver has to restart the car. Some cars are hard to start. Shops point to a mass air flow sensor that keeps getting replaced, or to a faulty computer, coils, and crankshaft sensor. Dealers often say only that no recall applies. Other reports describe a stiff brake pedal with every warning light on, brake lights that cut out, and a key stuck in an ignition that had to be replaced. Several filings only note that lower trims lack a backup camera.
Transmission91 crash
The transmission judders, slips, and revs high, then the car stalls or stops in traffic with no warning light. Dealers often replace the whole transmission, sometimes only weeks after the owner bought the car. Milder symptoms include shudder pulling away from stops, harsh downshifts, a bump when coming to a stop, and a whine under acceleration. One rental shifted into reverse on its own at low speed and hit a wall. Manual-transmission cars draw complaints of jerky clutch engagement. Dealers sometimes find no codes and only reset the computer.
Engine31 crash
Shutting off completely while driving is the main complaint, sometimes as the car merges onto a highway, and it happens more than once. In one report the car would not restart afterward, and a repair shop found no communication with the engine. A crash report from a rental car describes the steering locking up on a downhill road, and the car hit a tree at speed. Both people in the car were taken to the hospital by ambulance. Few complaints are filed here, but they describe a serious loss-of-control risk.
Acceleration and cruise control31 crash
The car is hard to slow down. Drivers describe a shaking brake pedal and brakes that feel too weak to stop the car, and one report blames worn brake pads. The car also loses power while sitting at stop lights. Other filings mention transmission trouble with stalling and engine revving. Drivers say it feels like losing control of the car. Only a handful of complaints fall under this heading, but one is crash-related and one lists an injury.
Steering2No crashes
Power steering cuts out while the car sits at a light. At the same moment the brake, battery, and oil warning lights come on, and the driver has to steer off the road and have the car towed. The dealer found no problem on a test drive. In another report the steering wheel locked while the car was parked and the ignition switch would not turn. Both complaints also mention ignition trouble, which matches the key and ignition problems reported under the electrical system.
In owners' own words
Excerpts from complaints Versa owners filed with NHTSA, as written. Listen for the same symptoms on your test drive.
Out of nowhere my airbag light start blinking, I ran the code and got a P2096 which apparently is not related to the airbag I took it to Firestone to get it checked out and they told me they cannot do anything about the airbag light I would have to go to my dealership for help with that. No one seems to know what to do.

1) When at red light with car in drive and brake pedal pressed the car occasionally begins to roll forward and then the brakes suddenly depress even more. 2) All brake lights intermittently go out and if hit will come back on for an unknown time until u realize they're not working again. 3) I have already had to replace the fuel pump twice with only 60k on miles on the car

19V654000Backup cameraSep 2019
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Nissan Altima, Armada, Frontier, Kicks, Leaf, Maxima, Murano, NV, NV200, Pathfinder, Rogue, Rogue Sport, Sentra, Titan, Titan Diesel, Versa Note and Versa Sedan vehicles, as well as Infiniti Q50, Q60, QX30 and QX80 vehicles. Additionally included are 2019 Nissan GT-R and Taxi and Infiniti QX50, QX60, Q70, Q70L vehicles. The back-up camera and display settings can be adjusted such that the rear view image is no longer visible and the system will retain that setting the next time the vehicle is placed in reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rear Visibility.".
Risk: The lack of an image in the back-up camera display increases the risk of a crash.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners in phases, having dealers update the back-up camera settings software, free of charge. The recall began November 11, 2019 and all affected VINs should be activated. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669 or INFINITI customer service at 1-800-662-6200.
18V551000ElectricalAug 2018
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2017 Nissan NV200, Sentra, NV3500 Van, NV3500 Bus, NV200 Taxi, NV1500, NV2500 Van, Chevrolet City Express, 2017-2018 Frontier, Versa Note, and Versa Sedan vehicles that have a mechanical (physical) key ignition system. In these models, over time, the weight on the key ring and road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
Risk: If the vehicle stalls, it can increase the risk of a crash.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the production information on the ignition switch, and replace it as necessary, free of charge. The recall began October 1, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-867-7669.
17V837000AirbagsDec 2017
Nissan North America, Inc. (Nissan) is recalling certain 2018 Nissan Versa Note vehicles. During deployment of the side curtain air bag, a component of the air bag inflator may detach. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (FMVSS) number 214, "Side Impact Protection," and 226, "Ejection Mitigation.".
Risk: If the component detaches during deployment, it may enter the passenger compartment and be a projectile within the vehicle cabin, increasing the risk of injury.
Fix: Nissan will notify owners, and dealers will replace the side curtain air bags, free of charge. The recall began February 13, 2018. Owners may contact Nissan customer service at 1-800-647-7261.
